Look at what $1,200 to $1,400 buys you here. That is Houston to Los Angeles, 1,566 miles, for less than what a car costs to move from New York to Los Angeles at nearly twice the distance but more than double the rate per trip out of that market. The reason is two-way traffic. I-10 runs coast to coast through the middle of Houston, I-45 connects it to Dallas, and trucks arrive here loaded and leave loaded. A driver who is not covering empty miles does not need to charge for them. Florida is the same story down I-10, which is why Jacksonville is our cheapest published Houston route.
What can make one Houston car shipping route cost more than another?
- Where it is going. A busy two-way market prices at the average. A quiet destination means empty miles before the driver's next load, and the rate covers them.
- Vehicle size and weight. A three-row SUV or a lifted truck takes more deck space than a sedan. Lifted trucks are common here and worth mentioning at quote time.
- Running or not. A non-running car needs a truck with a winch.
- Service level. Enclosed and expedited both cost more than open.
- Season. May through August is the peak nationally. Hurricane season runs June through November here and can shift a pickup by a day.
- Access at your address. Inside the Loop and in gated communities this matters more than anywhere else in the metro.
- Date flexibility. The biggest lever you control.
Why flexible car shipping dates save you money
Trucks fill a spot at a time. When a driver has one space left, they take the car that is easiest to collect on the way rather than one they have to detour for. Give us a three or four day window instead of a single date and your car is far more likely to be that one. Houston sits on I-10 and I-45, so there is usually a truck passing within a day or two of any date you give us.

Most of Greater Houston is easy. Katy, Sugar Land, Cypress, Pearland, The Woodlands, Spring, Kingwood and Friendswood were built around cars, with wide streets and real driveways, so a 75 foot hauler loads at the curb without anyone thinking about it. That covers most of the metro.
Inside the 610 Loop is where it changes. The Heights, Montrose, Rice Village, the Museum District and Midtown have narrow streets, older lots and a lot of on-street parking. Downtown and the Medical Center add loading restrictions on top. In those areas we pick a nearby lot in advance rather than discovering the problem on the day, and it costs you nothing.
The other Houston specific is gated communities, which there are a lot of out past Beltway 8. Give us the gate code or the name of whoever can let a truck in, and the driver is not sitting at a callbox with your car already on the deck.
