What does door-to-door actually mean in practice?
It means nobody drives the vehicle anywhere except the driver, and the two places it stops are your address and the delivery address. The alternative, which some companies still sell, is terminal to terminal, where you drop the car at a yard and collect it from another yard days later.
What happens on the day
The driver calls ahead, arrives, and walks the vehicle with you. You agree in writing what marks are already on it, the car goes up on the deck, and you keep a copy of that record. At the far end the same thing happens in reverse against the same document.
Where the truck cannot reach

Items left inside. Cargo insurance is written for the vehicle, not for what is in the trunk. Take valuables out, and take the toll tag out too unless you want to pay for a trip you did not make.

How do you prepare a vehicle for door-to-door collection?
Wash it, empty it, leave about a quarter tank, and photograph it. Ten minutes of preparation is what makes the inspection at the far end straightforward rather than a discussion.
