Fresno Car Shipping

Fresno, California Car Shipping & Auto Transport Updated September 2026

Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move  ·  USDOT 2887232  ·  MC 969368

Shipping a car to or from Fresno takes one to two days anywhere in California, two to four days to Phoenix or Seattle, and five to eight days to Texas, Chicago or the East Coast, once the car is loaded. Fresno is the largest city in the country with no interstate running through it. That sounds like a problem and it is not, because of the road that does serve it. Two minutes on Highway 99 will tell you more about your quote than anything else on this page.

Why we quote Fresno vehicle shipping live. We publish real prices on the California routes we hold data for. They run from about $1,300 on a Texas run up to about $1,950 on the longest Florida lanes. Fresno itself is not one of those routes yet. We could take a Bakersfield or Sacramento figure and move it up the Valley, but that puts a quote out by a few hundred dollars in either direction, so we do not. Your actual pair of zip codes gives the real number in about a minute.

Distances are driving miles from Fresno and the days begin when the car goes on the trailer. Your collection window comes first. Figures for an operable mid-size vehicle on an open trailer; oversized, modified, non-running and enclosed shipments each price on their own terms. See how the national bands work.

Why Fresno auto transport runs on Highway 99, not an interstate

Fresno is the most populous city in the United States with no interstate highway. More than half a million people, the fifth-largest city in California, and not one interstate shield in town.

It happened in the 1950s. When the interstate system was drawn, the planners put I-5 up the empty west side of the San Joaquin Valley instead of upgrading the old US 99 through the cities. I-5 got the through traffic. Highway 99 kept the people.

What Interstate 5 isThe express lane, about 60 miles west of here. It runs Los Angeles to the Bay Area through open country with almost nothing on either side. A driver taking a car straight from one metro to the other will use it and will never come near Fresno.
What Highway 99 isThe road that actually serves the Valley. It is a four-lane freeway for its entire 425 miles from Bakersfield up to Sacramento, and it strings together Delano, Tulare, Visalia, Fresno, Madera, Merced, Turlock, Modesto and Stockton in one line. Caltrans has long wanted it made an interstate.

Here is why that is good news for your car. A carrier who works the Central Valley takes 99 on purpose. He can pick up in Bakersfield, add yours in Fresno and finish filling the trailer in Modesto, all without leaving the freeway. Fresno sits right in the middle of that line. You are not off the route. You are on the road built for exactly this kind of work. Give a window rather than a single morning and your car catches one of those runs.

The Valley is a working freight corridor and that helps. Fresno County is regularly the top farming county in the United States by production value, most recently around $9 billion a year. That keeps Highway 99 a serious freight road with four lanes, full services and steady traffic in both directions. It also means Valley drivers know these exits and these streets, which shows up as fewer phone calls on pickup day.

Fresno Car Shipping Questions

The questions we get asked most in this market, answered for Fresno rather than with national averages.

How much does Fresno car shipping cost?

The destination sets it. We publish real prices on the California routes we hold data for, and they run from about $1,300 on a Texas run up to about $1,950 on the longest Florida lanes. Fresno is not one of those routes yet, so rather than move a Bakersfield or Sacramento figure up the Valley and get it wrong by a few hundred dollars, we price your actual pair of zip codes. Put both of them and the vehicle into the calculator and you have the number in about a minute.

Is it really true that Fresno has no interstate?

It is, and Fresno is the most populous city in the United States in that position. When the interstate system was laid out in the 1950s, I-5 was routed up the empty west side of the San Joaquin Valley rather than through the cities. What serves Fresno is Highway 99, which is a four-lane freeway for all 425 miles between Bakersfield and Sacramento. Caltrans has recommended for years that it be brought up to interstate standards.

Does having no interstate make Fresno car shipping harder?

No, and in one way it helps. Highway 99 links Bakersfield, Tulare, Visalia, Fresno, Madera, Merced, Modesto and Stockton in a single line. A carrier working the Valley can load in one city and top up in the next without leaving the freeway. Fresno sits in the middle of that line. The one thing worth doing is giving a pickup window rather than a single morning, so your car catches one of those runs.

Should I ship my car to Los Angeles or just drive it?

Drive it, most of the time. Los Angeles is 220 miles, San Francisco 185 and Sacramento 170, and all three are about three hours. Our published line is that under roughly 300 miles the numbers usually favor driving, and we would rather say so than sell you a load. There are three cases where shipping still wins on a short California run. A second car nobody is traveling in. A trip where you would have to buy a flight or a one-way rental to get home. Or two vehicles and a single driver.

How long does Fresno vehicle shipping take?

Count the pickup window first, then the road. The window is six days on standard and three on expedited, from the date you name. Once the car is loaded, figure one to two days anywhere in California. Two to four to Phoenix, Portland or Seattle. Four to six to Texas. Five to seven to Chicago. Seven to ten to New York. Federal hours-of-service rules cap the miles a driver can cover in a day.

What exactly is a pickup window?

It is a spread of days instead of one booked hour. Six days as standard, three if you go expedited, both running forward from the date you choose. The reason is that your car is one of nine or ten on a trailer, and all of them have to fit one sensible route. You get a call the evening before with an actual time, so nobody spends a day at the window. On a Valley pickup a wider spread is worth real money.

How far ahead should I book Fresno car shipping?

Ten days to two weeks is normally plenty. That is less notice than most cities this size need, and it comes from sitting on a corridor that runs loaded in both directions all year. Give three weeks if you are moving in the last two weeks of August, which is the busiest stretch, or if your dates cannot move at all.

Does the summer heat affect shipping a car from Fresno?

It affects the day rather than the trip. The average July high here is 98 degrees and plenty of days run past 100, so drivers work Valley pickups in the morning from June through September. Take an early slot if you are offered one. Check your tire pressures the week of pickup, since heat moves them. And keep anything heat-sensitive out of the car, including aerosols, electronics and medication.

What about tule fog in winter?

It is the one thing that can move a Fresno pickup by half a day, and it is easy to plan around. Tule fog is a dense ground fog that sits over the San Joaquin Valley from late fall into early spring, and visibility can change within a few feet, so drivers start later and let it lift rather than pushing on. Give a window rather than a fixed morning between November and March and it stops being your problem. There is no snow or ice here, so that is the whole of the winter story.

Can a car carrier get to my street in Fresno?

Almost always. Fresno is a wide, gridded city and a 75-foot trailer has room to turn in most of it. Northeast Fresno, the Bullard and Hoover areas, southeast Fresno and Clovis are all straightforward. Two spots need a word at booking: the older blocks around the Tower District, which are narrow with cars parked both sides and trees overhead, and any gated community or an address inside Old Fig Garden. Either way we agree the plan beforehand, and a nearby meeting point costs you nothing.

Do you pick up elsewhere in the Central Valley?

Everywhere in it. Clovis, Madera, Sanger, Reedley, Selma, Kingsburg, Fowler and Kerman come off the same runs, as do Visalia, Hanford, Tulare, Porterville, Merced, Los Banos, Turlock, Modesto, Stockton and Bakersfield. The foothill towns out toward Oakhurst are regular work too and want a few more days of notice.

Can you ship a car from Fresno to Chicago?

Yes, and it is one of our regular long runs at about 2,100 miles and five to seven days on the road. We keep a page for that route with the detail on it. Fresno to the Midwest and the East Coast is where most of our work here sits, because that is where shipping clearly beats driving.

Should I ship open or enclosed out of Fresno?

Open for almost everything. It is how new cars reach dealerships and it is what nine out of ten customers choose. Enclosed runs about 80 percent more, because a hard-sided trailer carries two to six cars instead of ten. It earns its money on a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or a car you would rather keep out of Valley sun and summer dust on a long run east.

Does door to door really mean my driveway?

In Fresno it usually does. The size is what decides it: a loaded trailer runs about 75 feet nose to tail and stands 13 and a half feet, and it needs somewhere to swing round and get out again. A wide gridded city gives it that in most places. On the few streets that do not, the driver picks a roomy spot close by and squares it with you first. That costs nothing extra and adds a few minutes to your morning.

Is my car insured on the way to or from Fresno?

Yes, for every mile. The cover sits with the carrier hauling your car, as Carrier Cargo Insurance. We get that carrier's certificate the moment a truck is assigned to your order, and you are welcome to a copy of it. Anyone can also verify a carrier independently. FMCSA SAFER is a free federal lookup that returns operating authority and insurance on file against a USDOT number. Ours is 2887232, and our MC number is 969368.

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.

Can you ship a car that does not run?

Yes, provided the wheels turn, the steering works and the brakes hold, and provided the trailer has a winch on it. No set surcharge, but budget $200 upward of the running price. Flag it when you ask for the quote so we send a winch truck rather than find out on the driveway. A car that has sat out a few Valley summers is worth mentioning even if you are fairly sure it will start.

How do I get the car ready?

Wash it, so the driver can see what he is writing down. Run the tank down to about a quarter. Fold the mirrors, take the roof bars off, empty the cabin. He needs one key and nothing else. Take your own photos before he pulls up, which is two minutes well spent. Say at booking if the car sits low or has been modified. In summer, check the tire pressures a day or two beforehand.

How do I pay, and what if my plans change?

You pay a deposit at booking and settle the rest with the driver when the car arrives. Cashier's check, money order and cash all work at that end. If you would rather deal with it in one go, put the full amount on a card when you book. Plans change often enough that we keep cancellation simple: nothing to pay while your order is still waiting for a carrier. After a truck has been assigned, call us early and we will sort it out with you.

Does it have to be me who meets the truck?

No, but it does have to be somebody who will look properly. A condition report gets signed at pickup and again at delivery, and that piece of paper is your protection, so it needs someone actually walking round the car. Any adult you trust can do it. Tell us who at booking, with a phone number, and the driver contacts them rather than you.

Fresno vehicle shipping reaches three big markets in a day

Fresno sits almost exactly in the middle of California, and that is the second thing worth knowing about shipping from here.

Los Angeles Fresno car shipping runs

220 miles straight down 99 to the biggest inbound market on the West Coast. Trucks fill fastest there, which is why a Fresno car heading anywhere east or south often starts by joining a Los Angeles run. We keep a staffed office in Los Angeles, so this is well-worn ground for us.

Bay Area Fresno auto transport runs

185 miles northwest to San Francisco and 150 to San Jose, over the Pacheco Pass on Highway 152. Different road, different market, and worth pricing separately rather than assuming the Los Angeles number applies.

Sacramento Fresno vehicle shipping runs

170 miles north, and the whole way is 99. The simplest run out of the city, and the one where a carrier is most likely to already be passing your address.

Which is why most Fresno car shipping orders leave the state. Everything above is a three-hour drive. Our own published line is that under about 300 miles you are usually better off driving it, and we would rather say so. Shipping earns its keep here in four situations. A second vehicle nobody is traveling in. A trip that would leave you buying a flight or a one-way rental to get back. Two cars and one driver. Or a run long enough that driving it stops being sensible. That last one is most of our Fresno work.

How long does Fresno car shipping take?

Driving time is only the middle of it. A booking has three parts, and the first one is usually the longest.

Your Fresno car shipping window opens first

Six days on standard, three on expedited, counted forward from the date you name. On a Valley pickup the window is doing real work, because it is what lets your car catch a 99 run rather than wait for one built around it.

Then the road out of the Valley

One to two days inside California, two to four to the Southwest or the Pacific Northwest, four to six to Texas, and seven to ten to New York. Federal hours-of-service rules cap how far a driver can legally travel in a day, and no service level changes that.

Then the delivery call

The driver phones ahead once he is close and you agree the exact place and time together. Give us a contact for whoever will actually be there to take the keys, which is often not the person who booked.

Ten days to two weeks of notice is normally plenty for a Fresno auto transport booking. That is less than a small market asks for, and it comes straight from sitting on a corridor that runs loaded in both directions all year.

What Valley heat means for your Fresno auto transport

Fresno summers are the real seasonal event here, not winter. The average July high is 98 degrees and plenty of days go past 100.

Fresno car shipping starts early in summer

Drivers work Valley pickups in the morning from June through September, because loading a nine-car trailer in afternoon heat is slower for everyone. If you are offered an early slot in August, take it.

What to check before the truck arrives

Look at your tire pressures the week of pickup. Heat changes them, and a soft tire is awkward to load and roll off at the far end. If the battery is old, this is the season it shows.

Leave nothing heat-sensitive inside

A closed car in a Valley August gets hot enough to warp a vinyl record or spoil a bottle of anything. Aerosols, electronics, candles and medication all belong with you rather than in the trunk.

Fog season and Fresno vehicle shipping, November to March

The Valley's other season is tule fog, and it is the one thing that can move a Fresno pickup by half a day.

Tule fog is a dense ground fog that forms across the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys from late fall into early spring. Visibility can drop within a few feet of travel. So drivers slow down, start later and let it lift rather than push through it. Which is exactly what you want a man carrying nine cars to do.

Handling it is simple. Between November and March, give a pickup window rather than a fixed morning, and the fog stops being your problem. Fresno car shipping runs all winter here, because the Valley has no snow and no ice to speak of. A few slow mornings are the whole of the seasonal story, and they are already built into the estimates on this page.

Can a carrier reach your street? Fresno car shipping access

Fresno is one of the easier cities in California for a full-size carrier. Wide streets, a grid layout, and room to turn almost everywhere. Three situations are worth flagging when you book.

Most Fresno auto transport loads at the address

Northeast Fresno around Woodward Park, the Bullard and Hoover areas, southeast Fresno and neighboring Clovis all have the space a 75-foot trailer needs. So do Madera, Sanger, Selma, Kingsburg and Visalia.

The Tower District and the older grid

The blocks around the Tower Theatre are older and narrower, with cars parked both sides and mature trees overhead. A wide spot a few minutes away settles it at no cost to you and adds about ten minutes to your morning.

Gates, and Old Fig Garden

Gated communities in north Fresno and Clovis want a visitor pass arranged ahead. Old Fig Garden has its own rules on what may park where. Mention either one at booking and we build the pickup around it rather than meeting it on the day.

Central Valley car shipping runs from here in every direction. Clovis, Madera, Sanger, Reedley, Selma, Kingsburg, Fowler and Kerman are all routine, along with Visalia, Hanford, Tulare, Porterville, Merced, Los Banos, Turlock and Modesto. The foothill towns toward Oakhurst and the Sierra are regular work too and simply want a few more days of notice.

Open, enclosed or expedited Fresno auto transport

Three ways to move the same car, and the choice is usually straightforward.

Open Fresno car shipping

The default here, and the sensible choice for an everyday car. Nine or ten cars on an uncovered double-deck trailer, which is how dealerships receive new stock. Far more open trailers work the Valley, so it schedules fastest too.

Enclosed Fresno vehicle shipping

Plan on about 80 percent more than open. A $1,000 open move is roughly $1,800 enclosed. A hard-sided trailer takes two to six cars against ten on an open one, so fewer vehicles share the cost of the run. Where it earns its money is a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or a car you would rather keep out of the Valley sun and dust.

Expedited Fresno auto transport

Cuts the collection window in half, six days to three. Worth asking about when a start date is fixed, and particularly useful on the long eastbound runs where the window is the only part of the timeline you can shorten.

Is your car insured on a Fresno car shipping order?

Yes, and it is worth a short read, because how the cover is arranged is not quite what people expect.

What covers the car

The carrier hauling your vehicle holds Carrier Cargo Insurance, and it applies for every mile of the trip. Once a truck is assigned to your order we hold that carrier's certificate of insurance, and a copy comes over as soon as you ask for one.

Nobody hands it off

One truck takes your car from the Fresno address and the same truck sets it down at the other end. It never sits in a yard waiting to be transferred. That matters because a handover between two companies is the moment cover gets complicated, and there is not one on your order.

You do not have to take our word for any of this. SAFER, run by the FMCSA, is free and open to anyone. Enter a USDOT number and it shows you whether that carrier holds live operating authority and has insurance on file. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
