When is the best time to ship a car from Michigan to Florida?

Michigan to Florida is the busiest route on this page. It runs on one road, and it runs in two seasons.

One road

Interstate 75 starts at Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula. It runs south through Detroit, Toledo, Cincinnati and Atlanta, then down the Gulf side of Florida to Tampa and Fort Myers before turning east. Most of a Michigan to Florida trip never leaves it.

Two seasons

Snowbirds head south from October through December and come home from April through May. Those weeks book first. The rest of the year the run is steady and easy to fit.

What that means for you. If you can ship in September or early October, you beat the southbound rush. Coming home, late May is calmer than April. In the busy weeks, give us two to three weeks of notice and a pickup window rather than one date. That is the single best thing you can do for your price.

Gulf side or Atlantic side. Tampa, Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples sit right on I-75, so the driver barely leaves the road. Orlando is a short hop east. Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach add the drive across the state, which is why they show a day more in the table.

Shipping two cars south? Many snowbird couples send one car and drive the other. If you would rather fly both ways, two cars on one truck is simple. Tell us when you book and we plan them together.

Michigan Car Shipping Questions

The questions we get asked most about Michigan, answered with this state's own numbers rather than national averages.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Michigan?

The cost to ship a car to or from Michigan is typically $450 on a short regional run and up to $2,100 coast to coast, on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 8 days in transit time. Detroit to Chicago is about 280 miles. Detroit to Los Angeles is about 2,280 miles. Your quote gives the real figure for your dates.

Why does this page show ranges by distance instead of a price for each route?

We only publish a route price once we have real Michigan loads behind it. Until then, each row shows the national range for that distance, and your quote gives the exact figure. We would rather show you an honest range than a number we cannot stand behind.

What sets the price of Michigan car shipping?

Distance comes first. Then the size of the vehicle, whether it runs, open or enclosed, the time of year, and how easily a truck can reach your street. A wider pickup window helps the most. It gives us more trucks to fit your car onto.

How long does it take to ship a car from Michigan?

Most Michigan moves take 1 to 8 days on the road. Ohio, Indiana and Chicago are 1 to 2 days. The East Coast and the Southeast are 2 to 4 days. Florida is 3 to 6 days. The West Coast is 6 to 8 days.

How soon will a truck pick up my car?

Pickup happens inside a window that starts on the date you ask for. Standard service is a 6-day window. Expedited service is a 3-day window. Metro Detroit and Grand Rapids usually fill early in the window. The Upper Peninsula and the far north take more of it.

When is the best time to ship a car from Michigan to Florida?

Ship in the shoulder of the season. Southbound books up from October through December, and northbound from April through May. If you can go in September or early October, or wait until late May, you join a truck that is not fighting for space.

What road does a car take from Michigan to Florida?

Interstate 75. It starts at Sault Ste. Marie in the Upper Peninsula and runs south through Detroit, Toledo, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Tampa before turning east toward Miami. One road carries most of the trip, and carriers run it every week.

Do you ship cars to and from the Upper Peninsula?

Yes. Give us a little more notice, about two to three weeks, and a window rather than one fixed date. Fewer trucks head north of the Mackinac Bridge, so a few extra days lets us fit you onto one that is already going.

Can a car carrier cross the Mackinac Bridge?

Yes. The bridge carries trucks all year. In very high wind the bridge authority can slow or hold heavy traffic, so a crossing can wait a few hours. Your driver plans around it, and it rarely changes the delivery day.

Does winter delay Michigan car shipping?

Sometimes by a day, rarely by more. Carriers run Michigan all winter. Lake-effect snow hits West Michigan hardest, near Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon. Clear and salt the loading spot, and brush the snow off so the inspection is accurate.

Should I pick open or enclosed transport in Michigan?

Open is the right call for most cars. Plan on about 80 percent more than open for enclosed. A $1,000 open move is roughly $1,800 enclosed. A hard-sided trailer holds two to six cars where an open one holds ten, so each car carries more of the cost. Worth it for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or a car too low to clear a ramp. For a daily driver, open is the right call.

Is my car insured while it ships from Michigan?

Yes. Your car is covered by the carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance from pickup to delivery. Once your order is assigned to a truck and carrier, we can send you the certificate of insurance right away.

Who is going to ship my car?

Smart Auto Move is. We place your car with a carrier we have vetted and worked with, and we stay with the move from pickup to delivery. We will get your car moved, or your money back.

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.

Is door-to-door really door-to-door in Michigan?

Yes, wherever a 75-foot carrier can safely reach. Most suburban streets are fine. Tight streets, low trees and weight-limited roads are where we meet at a nearby lot instead. A grocery store or big-box lot a few minutes away works well, and it costs nothing extra.

How do I get my car ready to ship?

Wash it so the inspection is clear. Take photos from every side. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Take out toll tags, garage openers and loose valuables. Tell us about any leaks or problems with starting. Then hand over one key.

How far ahead should I book Michigan car shipping?

One to two weeks is enough for most routes. Give two to three weeks for the Upper Peninsula, the far north, and the snowbird weeks in fall and spring. Booking earlier does not cost more. It gives us more trucks to choose from.

How does payment work?

We take a deposit when you book and the balance is due at delivery. Drivers usually take a cashier's check, money order or cash. You can also put the full amount on a credit card, but only at the time of booking, so the funds are ready for the carrier.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. Once we assign one and send you the driver's details, that money is spoken for. It is not gone, though. You can push the move back and use it on a later shipment.

How do I know a car shipping company is legitimate?

Check its USDOT and MC numbers on the FMCSA site, and read its reviews on the BBB and Google. Smart Auto Move is USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368, with a BBB A+ rating. Be careful of a quote far below the others. Ask that company if the rate is confirmed, then look for complaints about the price going up later.

Why do you take a deposit?

A deposit means we only work with committed customers, and it shows we are confident we can book a carrier at the price we quoted. A company that takes nothing up front is often not sure it can. Those are often the ones that come back later with a higher rate.

What do I need to register a car in Michigan?

Michigan No-Fault insurance first. The Secretary of State requires it to register or renew, and it does not accept an out-of-state policy. When you move to Michigan you buy a Michigan plate for the vehicle. Michigan has no state emissions test and no regular safety inspection.

Can you ship a car that does not run?

Yes. A non-running car needs a winch or a carrier with a lift, so it usually costs $200 or more above the same car running. Tell us when you book. We will talk it through and give you an accurate price.

Can I track my car while it ships?

You get the driver's phone number for calls or texts, plus email updates from us. GPS tracking is there when the carrier and the truck support it. We will tell you which applies once your carrier is assigned.

Do you ship cars between Michigan and Chicago?

Yes, and it is one of the shortest runs on this page at about 280 miles from Detroit and 180 from Grand Rapids. If the car runs and you have the time, driving it is a fair choice. Ship it when it does not run, when you have two cars and one driver, or when nobody can make the trip.

Is it cheaper to ship from Detroit or from Grand Rapids?

It depends on where the car is going. Grand Rapids is about 100 miles closer to Chicago and the West. Detroit is closer to Ohio, the East Coast and the I-75 run to Florida. Distance sets the band, and the pickup that is closer to the destination usually wins.

Do you have an office in Michigan?

Our closest staffed office is in Chicago at 742 E 87th Pl. It handles dispatch and coordination for Michigan moves. Your car is picked up at your address or a nearby lot and goes straight onto the carrier. It is never stored anywhere.

Can you ship a new car from a Michigan dealer?

Yes. Give us the dealer's name and the hours they release vehicles. Many dealers want a set pickup time. The driver inspects the car with the dealer's staff and you get the report.

What happens on delivery day?

The driver calls ahead with a time. You walk around the car together and compare it with the pickup report. You note anything new on the Bill of Lading, sign, and pay the balance. Then the car is yours.

Can Michigan auto transport reach the Upper Peninsula?

Yes, and we do it all year. The Mackinac Bridge joins the two peninsulas, and car carriers cross it every week. Marquette, Escanaba, Sault Ste. Marie, Houghton and Iron Mountain are all on our map.

Give a little more notice

Fewer trucks head north of the bridge than run Detroit to Florida. Two to three weeks of notice lets us place your car on one that is already going.

Give a window, not a date

A pickup window of a few days gives us more trucks to choose from. In a quieter market that matters more than anything else you can do.

Meet on the main road

US-2, US-41 and I-75 carry most of the traffic. A lot on one of them is often quicker than a long drive down a county road.

The bridge in wind. In very high wind the bridge authority can slow or hold heavy traffic. A crossing can wait a few hours. Your driver plans around it, and it rarely moves the delivery day.

Where in Michigan can you pick up, and does location change the price?

Location changes the price less than you might think. Distance to the destination sets the range. Within Michigan, what matters most is how close you are to a main road.

Metro Detroit car shipping

Detroit, Dearborn, Livonia, Troy, Warren, Sterling Heights and Ann Arbor. I-75, I-94, I-96 and I-696 all meet here. This is the easiest pickup in the state for the East Coast and Florida.

Grand Rapids and West Michigan

Grand Rapids, Holland, Muskegon, Kalamazoo and Wyoming. I-96 and US-131 carry the region. It is the closer pickup for Chicago and the West.

Lansing, Flint and Saginaw

Lansing and East Lansing sit on I-96 and I-69. Flint and Saginaw sit on I-75 and join the Florida run with no detour at all.

Northern Lower Michigan

Traverse City, Petoskey and Gaylord. US-131 and I-75 bring trucks north. Give a little more notice in winter and in the summer cottage season.

The Upper Peninsula

Marquette, Escanaba, Sault Ste. Marie and Houghton. Two to three weeks of notice and a window of dates work best.

Lake towns and cottages

Narrow lake roads and private drives are common. We meet at a lot nearby when the road is too tight for a 75-foot carrier.

Your car is never stored anywhere. It goes from your address straight onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance for the whole trip. The Chicago office handles dispatch and coordination, not drop-offs.

What do you need to register a car in Michigan after it ships?

Good news here. Michigan is one of the simpler states for a car arriving from somewhere else.

Michigan No-Fault insurance

Get this first. The Secretary of State requires Michigan No-Fault insurance to register a vehicle, and it does not accept an out-of-state policy.

A Michigan plate

When you move to Michigan, you buy a Michigan license plate for the vehicle. Bring the title and proof of your Michigan insurance to a Secretary of State office.

No emissions test

Michigan has no state emissions test and no regular safety inspection. There is nothing to book before you register.

Rules change from time to time, so check the Michigan Secretary of State site before your visit.

Does winter delay Michigan vehicle shipping?

Sometimes by a day, rarely by more. Carriers run Michigan all winter. A little planning makes the day go smoothly.

West Michigan gets the lake-effect snow

Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon see the heaviest snow, off Lake Michigan. A storm can add a day. The driver waits it out rather than rushing it.

Make pickup easy

Clear and salt the loading spot. Brush the snow off the car so the inspection is accurate. A plowed lot nearby works if your street is not.

Booking in winter. January and February are quiet months for most routes. Add a few days to your window for the Upper Peninsula and the far north.

How Michigan Car Shipping Works, Step by Step

Get your price

Give us both ZIP codes, the year, make and model, whether it runs, your first date, and open or enclosed. The Smart Price Promise holds the quote.

Book with a deposit

We take a deposit and start placing your car with a vetted carrier. Pickup runs inside a 6-day window from your date, or 3 days with expedited.

Meet the driver

You get the driver's details once a carrier is assigned. The driver calls ahead. You walk around the car together and sign the pickup report.

Take delivery

The driver calls ahead again. Check the car against the pickup report, sign, and pay the balance.

Open, Enclosed and Expedited Michigan Auto Transport

Open transport

The way most cars ship. A daily driver, an SUV or a pickup rides on an open carrier with up to ten vehicles. It is the right call for most Michigan moves.

Enclosed transport

Plan on about 80 percent more than open. Worth it for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint or a car too low to clear a ramp. A hard-sided trailer keeps out road salt and weather.

Expedited transport

Pickup inside a 3-day window instead of 6. Good when you have a closing date, a start date, or orders to report.

Should you ship your car or drive it out of Michigan?

Drive it when

The trip is short, like Chicago, Toledo or Indianapolis. The car runs well. You have the time and you are going anyway.

Ship it when

The trip is long, like Florida, Texas or the West. You would need a flight back. You have two cars and one driver. The car does not run, or nobody can make the drive.

Top 5 Reasons to ship your vehicle to or from Michigan instead of driving

  1. Skip the hard driving days. Long trips across several states bring weather, traffic and roads you do not know. Hand those miles to a driver who runs them every week.
  2. Rentals add up fast. A rental while you are away costs real money, comes with rules, and never feels like your own car.
  3. Get there sooner. Driving coast to coast eats days. Fly, land, and meet your car at the other end.
  4. Keep your travel money. Gas, motels, meals, tolls and the odd repair add up to more than most people expect.
  5. Enjoy the trip you planned. Storms, closures and a check-engine light can turn a drive into a three-day delay.
