Texas to Illinois Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car from Texas to Illinois is typically $925 to $1,400 on an open trailer, and takes between two to five days in transit time. It is one of the shorter out-of-state runs from Texas, and it ends at a staffed Smart Auto Move office in Chicago.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Texas to Illinois car shipping cost?
Every row is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, checked September 2026. The Texas city sets the distance, and Chicago covers the whole metro.
| City pair | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas or Fort Worth to Springfield or Peoria SHORTEST | About 830 miles | 2 to 3 days | $925 to $1,125 |
| Dallas or Fort Worth to Chicago | About 925 miles | 2 to 3 days | $950 to $1,150 |
| Houston to Chicago | About 1,085 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,000 to $1,200 |
| Austin to Chicago | About 1,180 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,050 to $1,250 |
| San Antonio to Chicago | About 1,200 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,050 to $1,250 |
| El Paso to Chicago LONGEST | About 1,450 miles | 4 to 5 days | $1,200 to $1,400 |
| Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. See how our national bands work.
Naperville, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin, Schaumburg, Evanston and the rest of Chicagoland share the Chicago rows. Rockford, Champaign, Bloomington and Quad Cities addresses sit near the Springfield figure, and the return trip prices the same.
Delivery in Chicago, from our own office
Chicago is the toughest delivery city in the Midwest for a nine-car trailer, and it is also where one of our four staffed offices sits. That combination is the main reason this lane runs smoothly.

An office on the South Side, not a storage yard. Your car goes from the Texas address to yours.
Naperville, Aurora, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Brook, Elgin, Joliet and most suburban Chicagoland, plus Rockford, Peoria, Springfield and Champaign.
Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Pilsen, Hyde Park and the older bungalow grids. Cars park both sides, alleys are narrow, and some viaducts sit too low for a loaded carrier, so the driver picks a wider street nearby.
Two Chicago details are worth knowing at booking. Winter parking restrictions clear certain streets overnight after a snowfall, which changes where a truck can stop. And permit parking zones fill early in the evening, so a morning handover is usually easier than one at six o'clock. Tell us the neighborhood and the driver plans around both.
Texas to Illinois Car Shipping Questions
The questions we get asked most on this route, answered with its own numbers rather than national averages.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Texas to Illinois?
$925 to $1,400 on an open trailer for a running mid-size car. Dallas to Springfield sits at the low end near $925, and El Paso to Chicago reaches $1,400 because it adds more than 600 miles.
How long does Texas to Illinois car shipping take?
Two to five days on the road once the truck is loaded. Dallas to Chicago is two to three days, Houston and Austin three to four, and El Paso four to five.
How far is it from Texas to Illinois?
Between 830 and 1,450 miles depending on where you start. Dallas to Springfield is the short version at about 830 miles and El Paso to Chicago the long one at about 1,450.
When does the pickup happen?
A six day window on standard service, starting from the first date you give us. Expedited shortens that window to three days for a fee.
Do you deliver to my address in Chicago?
Yes, and in most of Chicagoland a nine-car trailer reaches the door. In the older bungalow and two-flat grids the driver asks you to meet a wider street a block or two over, which takes a few minutes.
Is there a Smart Auto Move office in Illinois?
Yes. Our Chicago office is at 742 E 87th Pl and the number is 312-300-7773. It is one of four staffed offices in the company.
Does the car get stored at the Chicago office?
No. Every shipment is door to door. The car goes from the Texas pickup address straight to your Illinois address, and the office is where the people are, not the vehicles.
Is the price the same going the other way?
Yes. Illinois to Texas prices in the same ranges over the same distances, so a return move plans on the same figures.
What does enclosed transport add on this lane?
About 80 percent on top of the open price. It is the usual pick for a classic, a collector car or anything with new paint, and it keeps Illinois road salt off the underside in winter.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes. It needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more to the running price. The car has to roll, steer and brake, so tell us at quote time and the right equipment gets booked.
How does winter affect this route?
Only at the Illinois end. A snow day around Chicago or St. Louis can push a delivery back by a day, because drivers hold short of a storm rather than run into it. Planning one spare day in January and February is sensible.
What route do the trucks take?
North on I-35 or I-45 to Dallas, then I-44 through Oklahoma City and Tulsa to St. Louis, and I-55 into Chicago. El Paso loads go up through Amarillo first.
Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?
Someone does. It can be a friend, a relative, a neighbor or a colleague, as long as they are eighteen and can walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report.
What is the Smart Price Promise?
The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. Nothing gets added after booking on our side.
Will anyone call me trying to sell?
No. Smart Auto Move does not make outbound sales calls. You hear from us about your own shipment, and from the driver about pickup and delivery, and that is all.
What insurance covers my car?
Carrier Cargo Insurance held by the carrier moving your vehicle. We check that the policy is active before assigning the load, and we email you the certificate if you ask.
Can I leave things in the car?
Keep it empty. Personal items are not covered by the carrier's insurance, and the added weight can matter on a full trailer. Anything you must send should be light and out of sight.
Should I take the toll tag out?
Yes. A tag left on the windshield can register as the truck passes gantries in Oklahoma and Illinois, which leaves you with charges that are awkward to reverse.
How much fuel should be in the tank?
A quarter tank or less. That is enough to load, unload and drive away, without the extra weight a full tank puts on the trailer.
How do I pay?
A deposit books the move and the balance is due at delivery. Cash, a certified check or a card all work for the balance, and the driver tells you what they carry.
What happens if the car arrives damaged?
Note it on the delivery report before the driver leaves and take photos. That report, set against the pickup one, is what the carrier's insurance works from, and our Chicago office handles the claim with you.
Can you ship a truck or an SUV?
Yes. A pickup or a large SUV takes more room on the trailer, so it prices above the mid-size figures in the table. A lift kit, a roof rack or oversized tires should be mentioned when you ask for a price.
Do you move motorcycles on this route?
Yes, on carriers set up for them. A bike is quoted on its own rather than off the car table, so give us the make and model.
Can I ship more than one car at once?
Yes, and two cars from the same Texas address to the same Illinois address usually costs less per car than two separate bookings.
How far ahead should I book?
One to two weeks covers most of the year. Summer, the end of a month and the weeks around the holidays all get busier, so more notice helps there.
Do I need an Illinois emissions test?
Only in the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas. Most 1996 and newer gasoline cars are tested there once they turn four, in the month their plate expires, every two years. Rockford, Peoria and Champaign are outside the program.
How soon do I register the car in Illinois?
Illinois requires title and registration once you make the state your home. Take the Texas title, the registration and proof of Illinois insurance to a Secretary of State facility, and check the current deadline with them when you arrive.
Is there a safety inspection for cars in Illinois?
Not for ordinary passenger cars. Illinois has no annual safety inspection, so emissions is the only test to think about, and only in the two areas that require it.
Can you collect from a dealership or an auction?
Yes. Give us the business name, the lot address, a contact number and the hours, and the driver coordinates directly with them.
Do you ship student cars to Illinois?
Often. Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, Illinois at Chicago and Urbana-Champaign all see cars arrive from Texas at the start of each semester, and campus areas are usually met at a nearby lot rather than a dorm entrance.
Do you handle military moves on this lane?
Yes. Great Lakes, Scott Air Force Base and Rock Island all sit in Illinois and we ship to all three. The military car shipping page has the rest.
How do I get a price for my move?
Send the Texas pickup ZIP, the Illinois city or neighborhood, the year, make and model, whether it runs, and your earliest date. Call 312-300-7773 for Chicago or 888-709-9078 nationally, or use the quote form on this page.
What route does Texas to Illinois auto transport take?
This is a straight shot north, and one of the simpler lanes we quote out of Texas.
North from Dallas or Austin on I-35, then I-44 through Oklahoma City and Tulsa to St. Louis, and I-55 up to Chicago. Most loads take it.
Houston loads run north on I-45 to Dallas first, then join the same line. From El Paso the truck heads up through Amarillo and Kansas before turning east.
No mountain grade sits anywhere on this route. Winter is the one variable, and it is at the Illinois end: a snow day around Chicago or St. Louis can move a delivery by a day. Drivers hold short rather than push into a storm, which is why a spare day in January is worth planning for.
Where Texas to Illinois car shipping collects
We pick up across the Texas metros: Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Arlington, Irving, Austin, Round Rock, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Killeen, Waco, College Station, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa and El Paso.
Texas neighborhoods generally give a nine-car trailer what it needs, so your own address works as the loading point. In the cores of Houston, Dallas and Austin the room disappears, and the driver falls back on a lot nearby. That is ten minutes, at no cost.
On the Texas side we run service areas at Houston and McKinney, booked on 888-709-9078. There is a fuller picture of that end on the Houston car shipping page, and every Texas rate sits on the Texas car shipping page.
Registering your car in Illinois
Illinois asks for the vehicle to be titled and registered once you make the state your home, and the emissions step depends on where in Illinois you land.
- Take the Texas title and registration to a Secretary of State facility, along with proof of Illinois insurance. Check the current deadline with the Secretary of State when you arrive, since it is tied to establishing residency.
- Emissions testing covers the Chicago and Metro-East St. Louis areas, which are the parts of the state that do not meet federal ozone standards, according to the Illinois EPA.
- Most 1996 and newer gasoline passenger vehicles are tested, and only once they are four years old. A newer car is exempt for its first four years.
- The test month matches your license plate expiration, and it comes around every two years rather than annually.
Land outside those two areas, in Rockford, Peoria or Champaign for example, and no emissions test applies at all. Illinois has no annual safety inspection for passenger cars either, so the list is shorter than many states.
A Texas car meeting a Chicago winter
Battery first
A battery that never saw a freeze in Houston works much harder in January. Get it tested before December.
Then tires
All-seasons that lived their life on warm pavement lose grip on ice. Check the tread depth the week the car lands.
Then the underside
Road salt is the real cost of a Midwest winter. A wash with an undercarriage rinse every few weeks pays for itself.

Open, enclosed or expedited to Illinois
Open transport moves nearly every car on this lane, and the whole table is priced on it. Enclosed is the choice for a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and it keeps Midwest road salt off the underside on a winter move. Add about 80 percent to the open price.
Expedited pulls the pickup window down to three days when a date will not move, which helps around a lease return or a closing. Our open and enclosed guide compares the two in full.
A car that will not start travels on this route too. A winch loads it, which puts $200 or more on the running price, and mentioning it at quote time gets the right truck booked.
The carrier behind your Texas to Illinois shipment
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 handles the whole run. FMCSA authority in force and insurance on file come before anything else. Then we look at the trailer, how often that driver works the I-44 and I-55 corridors, and what their recent deliveries looked like.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the car from the Texas pickup through the Illinois delivery, with the certificate emailed to you. Our own record is open to anyone at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368 on SAFER.
