Las Cruces Car Shipping

Las Cruces is better connected for car shipping than a city of 111,000 in southern New Mexico has any right to be. Two interstates meet here, one of them starts here, and one of the busiest freight corridors in the Southwest runs 42 miles down the road. If you have been bracing for remote-town pricing, you can stop.
How much does Las Cruces car shipping cost?
We do not print a Las Cruces rate table, and we would rather tell you why than pad the page. Our completed shipments out of southern New Mexico are not numerous enough to call any single Las Cruces pair a measured figure, and an invented number helps nobody.
Start instead from the national band by distance: about $450 to $900 for runs under 500 miles, $900 to $1,600 between 500 and 1,500, and climbing beyond that. Your position inside a band turns on the direction you are headed, the vehicle itself, and how much slack your dates carry. See how the national bands work.
We do publish real figures for Albuquerque, eight routes with our own completed shipments behind them, on the Albuquerque car shipping page. Read them as useful context rather than as your price. Las Cruces sits 225 miles south on a different road, with El Paso next door, and we would rather you got a live quote than inherited a number from another city.
The current figure for your exact route and vehicle comes from the calculator above or from a phone quote, and the Smart Price Promise holds it once you book. Estimates move with fuel, the single biggest cost in moving a car. Oversized, modified, non-running and enclosed shipments each price on their own terms.
Las Cruces auto transport sits where one interstate ends and another runs through
Interstate 25 does not pass through Las Cruces. It begins here, at Interstate 10, and runs north for more than a thousand miles.
That is not trivia. It means every truck working the Rocky Mountain corridor, through Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver, Cheyenne and Casper, has one end of its road right here. And I-10 crosses it going east and west, from the California coast to Florida. Your car has two full-size corridors to choose from before it has gone a mile.
And the reason this matters more than the map suggests: El Paso is 42 miles south, one of the busiest freight markets on the southern border. Las Cruces is close enough to borrow its truck density. A carrier who has just unloaded in El Paso can reach you inside an hour, which is why pickup here tends to be quicker than the city's size would predict.
Las Cruces Car Shipping Questions
The questions we get from Doña Ana County, answered for Las Cruces rather than with national averages.
How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Las Cruces?
We publish the national cost band rather than a Las Cruces rate table, because our completed shipments out of southern New Mexico are not numerous enough to call any single pair a measured figure. The band is roughly $450 to $900 under 500 miles and $900 to $1,600 from 500 to 1,500 miles, rising from there. Put your actual route into the calculator for the live number.
Why do you publish prices for Albuquerque but not Las Cruces?
Because we have the shipments behind the Albuquerque figures and not yet behind these. Eight Albuquerque routes are published on its own page with our own completed loads underneath them. Las Cruces is 225 miles south, on a different road, with El Paso next door, and we have learned the hard way that a lane does not inherit another city's price. You are welcome to read the Albuquerque numbers as context, but we will not hand them to you as yours.
Is Las Cruces expensive to ship from because it is remote?
It is not, and this is the most useful thing on the page. Two interstates meet here, I-25 actually begins here, and El Paso sits 42 miles south with one of the busiest freight markets in the Southwest. A carrier who has just unloaded there can reach you inside an hour. Remote pricing comes from places trucks have to detour to reach, and this is the opposite of that.
Which way does my car leave Las Cruces?
One of two roads, and you have a genuine choice of corridor. North on I-25 takes you up through Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Denver and the Front Range. East or west on I-10 takes you to Phoenix, Tucson and Los Angeles one way, or El Paso, San Antonio and Houston the other. Both carry steady two-way traffic, which is why this is a comfortable market to ship out of.
What are the transit times from Las Cruces?
Roughly a day to Phoenix or Albuquerque, one to two to Tucson or San Antonio, two to Denver, Houston or Dallas, two to three to Los Angeles, and four to five coast to coast. Those count from the moment the car is loaded, and your collection window sits ahead of them. Daily distance is capped by federal driving-hour rules.
How far ahead should I book Las Cruces auto transport?
Ten days to two weeks is comfortable for most of the year. Give three weeks around the NMSU move-in weeks in August and again in May, and through the winter months when the whole southern corridor is busier with snowbird traffic. There is no season here when the route effectively closes.
What is a pickup window?
Dates, not an hour. Six days standard, three expedited, running from the day you pick. The reason is that nine or ten cars share the trailer and a single route has to serve all of them. A call comes the evening before with a real time. A wider spread is precisely what lets a driver drop your car into a run already taking shape.
Does summer heat affect the shipment?
Not the transport itself. Drivers here work through it every year and plan loading around the worst of the afternoon. What it is worth doing at your end is checking the battery and the tire pressures if the car has been standing a while, because heat is harder on a battery than cold is and you want it starting cleanly when it arrives.
What about the dust storms on I-10?
They happen in spring on the stretch west of town, and the state closes the road briefly when visibility drops. Closures are measured in hours rather than days and drivers watch for them. A collection window of a few days rather than a single fixed date absorbs it completely, which is the same advice we would give you anyway.
Is winter a good time to ship from Las Cruces?
It is one of the better ones. There is no snow to plan around, the southern corridor stays busy, and trucks run through in both directions all season. January through March is a comfortable stretch to move a car from here if your dates have any room in them.
Can a carrier reach my street in Las Cruces?
Nearly everywhere, easily. Wide streets and turning room are the norm on the east mesa, in Sonoma Ranch and Telshor, and through the newer subdivisions, and the Main Street corridor is much the same. The narrow exceptions are Old Mesilla and the historic blocks by the plaza, where adobe walls sit tight to the road. We pick a nearby lot together for those, and it adds nothing to your price.
Do you collect outside Las Cruces?
Across southern New Mexico. Mesilla, Anthony, Deming, Alamogordo and the Hatch valley all come off the same runs. For an address well off the highway, meeting at a wide spot on the nearest paved road often gets the car moving a day or two sooner than waiting for a truck that can reach the door.
Do you have an office in Las Cruces?
Las Cruces is one of our service areas rather than a staffed office, so there is no counter to visit and there does not need to be. Your car is collected from your address either way. The national line is 888-709-9078 and it is staffed for anything that comes up in New Mexico.
Do you ship cars for NMSU students?
Regularly. The main campus sits just outside the city limits and the streets around it get busy in August, so a meeting point a few blocks out usually saves time. Students may also qualify for our student discount, which is worth asking about before your price is confirmed rather than after.
Can you collect from a family address and deliver to the student?
Yes, and it is common. We collect wherever the car currently is, anywhere in the country, and deliver to the Las Cruces address. The student can take delivery on their own as long as their name and cell number are on the booking, so nobody needs to fly out for it.
Should I choose open or enclosed?
Open for almost every vehicle, and it underpins every figure here. It is the trailer dealerships take new stock on. Enclosed runs about 80 percent more, because a hard-sided trailer carries two to six cars instead of ten. Where it earns that is a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or a car that sits too low for an open ramp.
Does expedited make sense on this route?
Less often than in a thinner market, and we would rather say so. Expedited cuts the collection window from six days to three; the drive is fixed either way by federal hours. The thing is that El Paso traffic already brings trucks past here quickly, so the standard window frequently behaves like a paid-for one. Give us your dates and we will tell you straight whether it is worth buying.
Can I leave personal items in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.
Can you ship a car that does not run?
Yes, provided the wheels turn, the steering works and the brakes hold, and provided the trailer has a winch on it. No set surcharge, but budget $200 upward of the running price. Flag it when you ask for the quote so we send a winch truck rather than find out on the driveway.
What do I need to do before the driver arrives?
Wash it, so the driver can see what he is writing down. Run the tank down to about a quarter. Fold the mirrors, take the roof bars off, empty the cabin. He needs one key and nothing else. Take your own photos before he pulls up, which is two minutes well spent. Say at booking if the car sits low or has been modified.
Who insures my car on the way out of New Mexico?
The trucking company moving it. The policy is Carrier Cargo Insurance and it belongs to that carrier, not to us, riding with the truck the entire way. Its certificate reaches us when the order is accepted and we will pass it along on request. Want to verify it yourself? SAFER is the FMCSA's free public record of a carrier's authority and filed insurance, searchable by USDOT number. Ours is 2887232, MC 969368.
Is the car transferred between trucks?
It is not. The same driver handles collection in Las Cruces and delivery at the other end. Your car is not left in El Paso or Tucson en route and no second company is ever involved. Because the vehicle never changes hands, the usual source of damage disputes is absent.
Can a friend or relative accept the car?
Anybody you would trust with it. What actually matters is the condition report, which gets signed at collection and again at delivery and is your evidence if anything is ever queried. So whoever stands there needs to walk the car properly before signing. Add their name and number to the booking and the driver deals with them.
Where Las Cruces vehicle shipping collects your car
Most of the city is straightforward for a full-size carrier. Las Cruces was built with room, and the desert grid helps.
Most Las Cruces car shipping loads at the address
The east mesa developments, Sonoma Ranch, Telshor and the newer subdivisions north and east all have wide streets and space to turn. So does most of the area along Main Street and out toward the interstate.
Mesilla and the older auto transport streets
The exceptions are Old Mesilla and the historic blocks by the plaza, where adobe walls sit tight to the road and a 75-foot trailer has nowhere to back up. We pick a nearby lot together, well ahead of the day itself.
NMSU vehicle shipping at move-in
The main campus sits just outside the city limits, and the streets around it get busy in August. A meeting point a few blocks out usually saves more time than it costs. Students may also qualify for our student discount, worth asking about before your price is confirmed.

Your car is collected from your address either way, and the national line on 888-709-9078 is staffed for anything that comes up in New Mexico. We also collect across the region, including Mesilla, Anthony, Deming, Alamogordo and the Hatch valley.
How long does Las Cruces auto transport take?
Two stages, and the second is the one that behaves predictably. Getting a truck to the car is where the time usually goes, and here that stage is shorter than most.
Your Las Cruces car shipping window comes first
Six days on standard, three on expedited, counted forward from the date you name. With El Paso next door, pickups here often land early in that band rather than late, which is not something we can say about every desert market.
Then the auto transport road itself
About a day to Phoenix or Albuquerque, one to two to Tucson or San Antonio, two to Denver, Houston or Dallas, two to three to Los Angeles, and four to five to either coast. Those floors are set by federal driving-hour limits, which no service level gets around.
Then the vehicle shipping delivery call
A call comes when he is close enough to plan around, and the two of you fix the place and the hour. Make sure the booking carries the name and cell number of whoever will meet him with the keys.
Ten days to two weeks of notice is comfortable here for most of the year. Give three weeks around the NMSU move-in weeks in August and again in May, and through the winter snowbird months when the whole southern corridor is busier. There is no season when this route effectively closes, which is one of the quiet advantages of shipping from the south.
Desert conditions and your Las Cruces car shipping order
Southern New Mexico is kind to auto transport for most of the year. Two things are worth a sentence each.
Summer heat on a vehicle shipping run
Afternoons run well past 100 degrees from June to September, and drivers plan loading around the worst of it. If your car has been standing a while, check the battery and the tire pressures before pickup so it starts cleanly at the far end. Heat is harder on a battery than cold is.
Blowing dust and I-10 auto transport
The stretch of I-10 west of town gets dust storms in spring, and the state closes the road briefly when visibility drops. Closures are measured in hours and drivers watch for them. A collection window of a few days rather than a single date absorbs it completely.
Neither is a reason to wait. Winter here is genuinely the easy season: no snow to speak of, a busy southern corridor, and trucks running through in both directions. If your dates are movable, January through March is a good stretch to ship from Las Cruces.
Open, enclosed or expedited Las Cruces vehicle shipping
Three ways to move the same car, and out of here the first one covers nearly everybody.
Open Las Cruces car shipping
The default here, and the fastest to get moving, since open trailers make up the great majority of what runs I-10 and I-25. Nine or ten vehicles share an uncovered double-deck trailer, the same rig that delivers new stock to dealerships.
Enclosed Las Cruces auto transport
Plan on about 80 percent more than open. A $1,000 open move is roughly $1,800 enclosed. A hard-sided trailer takes two to six cars against ten on an open one, so fewer vehicles share the cost. Worth it for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or a car you would rather keep out of the sun.
Expedited Las Cruces vehicle shipping
Shortens the collection window to three days from six. Driving time is untouchable, being governed by federal hours. Since trucks already reach Las Cruces quickly, this upgrade pays off here less often than it would somewhere with fewer carriers passing, and we will say so rather than sell it.
Is your car insured on a Las Cruces auto transport order?
It is, for the entire trip. The part that catches people out is whose policy it actually is, so here is the short version.
What covers your Las Cruces car shipping order
Carrier Cargo Insurance, carried by the trucking company hauling your car rather than by Smart Auto Move. It is live for every mile of the run. We receive a copy of the certificate the moment a carrier takes the order, and it is yours to see whenever you want it.
One vehicle shipping driver from end to end
The driver who collects in Las Cruces is the driver who delivers. There is no stop in El Paso or Tucson where the car is left, and no second firm involved at any stage. Nearly every argument about damage begins at a transfer point, and this route simply does not have one.
You can confirm every bit of that yourself. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public record: search a USDOT number and it returns the carrier's authority and the insurance filed on it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
