Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car to or from Montgomery, Alabama is typically $450 to $1,900 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 9 days in transit time. Birmingham is about 90 miles away and Atlanta about 160, and both start at $450 to $600. Seattle reaches $1,700 to $1,900 over about 2,700 miles. One fact shapes almost every route on this page. Montgomery is where I-85 begins, and I-65 crosses it here.

Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the biggest cost in hauling a car. It tracks the market, so we review the rows against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Where these figures come from. Montgomery sits between two curves we already publish, so the rows are bracketed rather than guessed. Our Atlanta to Las Vegas page prices Denver at about 1,400 miles for $1,100 to $1,300. It prices Phoenix at about 1,830 miles for $1,250 to $1,450. Los Angeles is about 2,180 miles at $1,400 to $1,600. Our Jacksonville page prices Atlanta at about 345 miles for $550 to $700. Houston is about 890 miles at $900 to $1,050. Montgomery is 160 miles closer to the West than Atlanta. It is also closer to Texas than Jacksonville. Every row here steps off those published figures. Nothing on this page contradicts a figure we publish elsewhere.
How to read the two middle columns. The distance and the day range go together in order. The shortest trip in a row takes the fewest days and the longest takes the most. A loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day, so read the ends of each range as a pair.
Montgomery is where Interstate 85 begins, and that is worth money
Most city pages just tell you they cover your area. Montgomery lets us do better, because of where the roads meet.
Montgomery is the southern terminus of Interstate 85. The road starts here. It runs northeast through Atlanta, on to Charlotte and up the Atlantic seaboard. Interstate 65 is the main north and south route through the city. It carries Birmingham and Huntsville traffic one way and Mobile the other. So Montgomery is not a stop off a highway. It is where a Gulf-to-Midwest road crosses the start of a Southeast-to-Northeast one.
Trucks pass you anyway
A carrier running Mobile to Nashville is already close to Montgomery. So is one running Atlanta to Houston. Neither has to leave its route to reach you, and the short rows show it.
Two directions, two markets
Northeast on I-85 reaches Atlanta, the Carolinas and the seaboard. North and south on I-65 reaches Birmingham, Nashville, Mobile and the Gulf. Both are busy.
It is a vehicle-building city
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama builds cars here. New vehicles leave Montgomery on car carriers every week. The industrial roads around town are built for that kind of truck.
What that means at your curb
Nobody local is surprised by a 75-foot trailer. The wider roads and newer areas handle one easily. In most of the city a loading spot is simple to agree.
The older neighborhoods
Cloverdale, the Garden District, Huntingdon and the area around ASU are historic districts. Narrow streets, heavy tree cover. We plan a wider meeting point a few minutes away.
Downtown and the river
Downtown sits on the southern bank of the Alabama River, on rolling ground about 220 feet up. A few approaches there are steep. A long trailer would rather load on the flat.
What this means for you. Tell us your neighborhood or ZIP code at booking, not at the curb. Almost all of Montgomery is easy for a carrier. Where it is not, we know the few streets to plan around. It costs you nothing to say so early.
Montgomery Car Shipping Questions
The questions Montgomery and River Region customers really ask, answered with this city's own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Montgomery?
The cost to ship a car to or from Montgomery, Alabama is typically $450 to $1,900 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 9 days in transit time. Birmingham is about 90 miles away at $450 to $600. San Francisco is about 2,350 miles at $1,475 to $1,675. The table on this page prices twenty-two routes.
Why is Montgomery cheaper than most cities its size?
Two big interstates meet here. I-65 runs north and south. I-85 starts here and runs northeast. So trucks pass through Montgomery on the way almost anywhere. A carrier rarely has to leave its route to reach you.
Is Montgomery really the end of I-85?
Yes. Montgomery is the southern terminus of Interstate 85. From here the road runs northeast to Atlanta, then on to Charlotte and up the Atlantic seaboard. That one fact shapes every eastbound route on this page.
Does the Hyundai plant affect car shipping here?
It helps with access. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama builds cars in Montgomery, so new vehicles leave the city on car carriers every week. The roads around town are used to big trucks. That makes loading simpler than in a city that never sees one.
How far is Atlanta from Montgomery?
About 160 miles, straight up I-85. We price that run at $450 to $600 and deliver the same day. Marietta, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs and Decatur all price the same.
How far is Birmingham?
About 90 miles up I-65. It is the shortest route on this page at $450 to $600, same day. If the car runs and you have ninety minutes, driving it is the better call. And we will tell you so.
What about Mobile and the Gulf Coast?
Mobile is about 170 miles south on I-65 and Pensacola is a similar distance southeast. Both are $450 to $600 and same day. New Orleans is about 320 miles at $525 to $675.
How long does Montgomery car shipping take?
From 1 day on the short Alabama and Georgia runs up to 9 days to the West Coast. Birmingham and Atlanta are same day. Chicago is 2 to 3 days. Los Angeles is 6 to 8. Seattle is 7 to 9.
When do the days start counting?
When the car goes on the trailer. Your pickup window comes first: 6 days as standard, or 3 days with expedited. Once it is loaded, the transit range on the table applies.
Do you pick up at my house in Montgomery?
Yes, door to door. The driver comes to your address wherever the truck can legally and safely get in. If your street is narrow or the trees are low, we agree a wide spot nearby. We do that at booking, not at the curb.
What if I live in Cloverdale or the Garden District?
Those older neighborhoods have narrow streets and a lot of big trees. We plan a meeting point a few minutes away on a wider road. Tell us the neighborhood when you book and it is sorted in advance.
Do you serve Prattville and Millbrook?
Yes. Prattville, Millbrook, Wetumpka, Pike Road and Tallassee all price with Montgomery. Give us the ZIP code and the routing follows.
Is my car insured while it ships?
Yes. Your car travels under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance. Cover starts when the car is loaded and ends when it is handed back to you.
Can I see the carrier's insurance before you load my car?
Yes. We give you the carrier's name and USDOT number. Look them up on the FMCSA SAFER system to see their active authority and insurance. Look us up too, under USDOT 2887232.
Who actually drives the truck?
A vetted carrier from our network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company. We arrange and manage the move. And we tell you exactly who has your car.
Do you own the trucks, or do carriers haul the car?
Carriers haul the car. We handle the price, the routing, the paperwork and the updates, and we stay with the job from booking to delivery. That is why you get one phone number for the whole trip.
How do I know a carrier is safe?
Every carrier we assign holds active federal authority and current cargo insurance. We check both before the job goes out. You can verify the same records yourself on FMCSA SAFER in about a minute.
What is a Bill of Lading?
It is the condition report and the receipt in one. The driver walks the car with you at pickup and records how it looks. At delivery you compare the car against that record, note anything, and sign.
What should I do before the driver arrives?
Wash it so the condition report is accurate. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Fold the mirrors, remove a toll tag, and take photos with a date on them. That is really all of it.
Can I leave things in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it light. Keep it in the trunk or below the window line. Keep it to things you would not miss. Cargo insurance covers the vehicle rather than the contents, so anything valuable travels better with you.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes, as long as it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch and the extra starts at $200, rising with the work involved. Tell us the street too, since a winch job needs more room.
What does enclosed transport cost from Montgomery?
About 80 percent more than open. It is the right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic or a fresh restoration. For most cars, SUVs and pickups, open is the sensible choice.
Do I need enclosed transport?
Most cars do not. Open carriers are what the factories use to deliver new vehicles, including the ones built here in Montgomery. Choose enclosed when the car is rare, low to the ground or freshly painted.
How much faster is expedited?
Expedited narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same, because federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
Can you promise a delivery date?
We give you a window and we keep you posted as the truck moves. Weather, traffic and the other cars on the trailer all move the clock. A window we can hold beats a date we cannot.
How many cars are on the truck with mine?
Usually up to nine on an open trailer. The route is built around all of them. That is why a loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day, not the 500 you sometimes see quoted.
Can I track my car?
Call or message us any time and we will tell you where it is and when it is due. You also have the driver's number once the car is loaded.
How far in advance should I book?
One to two weeks is comfortable for most Montgomery routes. Book earlier for enclosed. Book earlier for a set week in summer, or for a move built around a course date at Maxwell.
Does Maxwell Air Force Base bring a lot of moves?
It does. Maxwell is home to Air University, which trains officers on set course dates. Gunter Annex adds to it. Those dates bunch up, so book as soon as you have orders.
Do you offer a military discount?
Yes, and with the base and Gunter Annex here we handle military moves constantly. Tell us you are service-connected when you ask for the price. Read your orders first, since some moves are covered.
Do you ship cars for students?
Yes. Alabama State, Auburn Montgomery, Huntingdon, Faulkner and Troy Montgomery all sit in or near the city. Auburn's main campus is under an hour away. Late August and mid-May are the busy weeks.
How long do I have to register a car in Alabama?
Thirty days from the date the vehicle enters the state, if it has valid registration from where you came from. That is the Alabama Department of Revenue's own answer, and it gives you room to settle in.
Does Alabama require an emissions test?
No. The Alabama Department of Revenue puts it plainly: Alabama law does not provide for emissions testing of motor vehicles. Nowhere in the state, for any vehicle.
Does Alabama require a safety inspection?
There is no periodic safety inspection to pass. The licensing official checks the VIN and the ownership papers when ownership changes. That is a counter check, not a garage appointment.
What do I need to register the car here?
An Alabama title application. Alabama liability insurance, in place before you register. Then the VIN and ownership check at the licensing office. No emissions test and no safety inspection to book.
Is Alabama an easy state for an incoming car?
It is one of the easiest in the country. No emissions testing anywhere. No safety inspection. Thirty days to register. And insurance you can set up before the car even lands.
Which is cheaper, shipping or driving to Atlanta?
Driving, most of the time. It is 160 miles and about two and a half hours. Shipping it makes sense if the car will not start. Or if two cars are moving with one driver. Or if nobody can make the trip.
At what distance does shipping start to make sense?
Around the 600-mile mark, which from here is Houston, Dallas or Miami. Past that it is a full day of driving each way, plus fuel and a night somewhere. The trailer wins on cost and on wear.
Do you ship trucks and SUVs?
Yes. A mid-size SUV or crossover adds about $150 to the table figure. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV adds about $300. Lifted, dualie and oversized vehicles price on their own terms.
Do you ship motorcycles?
Yes, and they usually travel on a dedicated bike carrier or crated inside an enclosed trailer. Tell us the model and we will price it properly rather than treating it like a car.
Do you ship classic cars from Montgomery?
Yes, and most go enclosed. Tell us the ground clearance, whether it runs, and whether it has a battery cut-off. Low cars need a lift gate or extended ramps, and it is better to arrange that at booking.
Do you ship to and from dealers and auctions?
Yes. Dealer transfers and auction pickups run on their own timelines and paperwork, and we handle both across the Southeast regularly.
Do you ship out of the Hyundai plant?
Factory output moves on the manufacturer's own contracts. We handle everything else: private sales, dealer transfers, employee relocations and personal vehicles moving in and out of the area.
What is the cheapest route from Montgomery?
Birmingham at about 90 miles, $450 to $600. Atlanta, Mobile and Pensacola follow at the same price. Everything inside about 500 miles sits in our cheapest national band.
What is the longest route you ship from Montgomery?
Seattle, about 2,700 miles, $1,700 to $1,900 over 7 to 9 days. San Francisco is about 2,350 miles and Los Angeles about 2,020.
How much to ship a car from Montgomery to Texas?
Houston is about 660 miles at $900 to $1,050 over 2 to 3 days. Dallas is about 745 miles at $900 to $1,075. Fort Worth, Plano and Frisco price with Dallas.
How much to ship a car from Montgomery to Florida?
Jacksonville is about 340 miles at $525 to $700. Orlando is about 460 miles at $600 to $750. Miami is about 690 miles at $900 to $1,050.
How much to ship a car from Montgomery to California?
Los Angeles is about 2,020 miles at $1,350 to $1,550 over 6 to 8 days. San Francisco is about 2,350 miles at $1,475 to $1,675.
How much to ship a car from Montgomery to the Northeast?
New York is about 1,000 miles at $975 to $1,150 over 3 to 4 days. That covers all five boroughs plus Newark. Washington DC is about 800 miles at $925 to $1,100.
How much to ship a car from Montgomery to Chicago?
About 790 miles at $925 to $1,100 over 2 to 3 days. Our Chicago office is at 742 E 87th Pl and the number there is 312-300-7773.
Do prices change with the season?
They move with demand and with fuel. Summer and the weeks around the start of a school term are the busiest. December through March is usually the calmest stretch on this corridor.
Does hurricane season affect Montgomery shipping?
It can, on the Gulf legs. Montgomery sits about 170 miles inland, so storms mostly show up as a slower day rather than a cancelled run. August through October is the stretch to build a little slack into.
What about winter?
Central Alabama winters are mild and the roads here stay open. Winter shows up at the far end of a long route. A January run to Chicago or Denver is the one worth booking early.
Why is the Alabama River in the picture?
Downtown Montgomery sits on the southern bank, and the city has rolling terrain at about 220 feet above sea level. The practical effect is a few steep approaches downtown that a long trailer would rather avoid.
Does the price change if I am flexible on dates?
A wider window gives us more runs to fit you into, and that generally works in your favor. If your dates are fixed, tell us and we will plan around them instead.
Is the quoted price the price I pay?
Yes. That is the Smart Price Promise. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same.
What would change the price after I book?
Only a change on your side. A different vehicle, a different address, a car that will not start, or a pickup outside the agreed window. Tell us early and we reprice it openly.
When do I pay?
You pay when the car is delivered, at the price you were quoted. We will set out the payment methods the carrier accepts before pickup so there is no scrambling at the curb.
What if something is damaged?
Note it on the Bill of Lading before you sign, and photograph it. Then call us. The claim goes to the assigned carrier's cargo insurance and we help you through it rather than handing you a number.
Can somebody else hand over or receive the car?
Yes. Give us their name and number and they can sign the Bill of Lading at either end. Make sure they know to check the car properly before signing.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico?
Not at present. Service covers the lower 48 states.
Do you have an office in Montgomery?
Not a staffed one. Our four staffed offices are Lakewood WA, Los Angeles CA, Chicago IL and Kissimmee FL. Montgomery is served by our carrier network. The national line is 888-709-9078.
Where is Smart Auto Move based?
Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Los Angeles, Chicago and Kissimmee, and we serve Montgomery through our carrier network.
Is my car stored anywhere along the way?
No. It goes from your address onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance until it is handed back. There is no terminal and no holding lot in between.
Are you licensed?
Yes. USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368, and Smart Auto Move is BBB A+ accredited. You can check the federal records on FMCSA SAFER whenever you like.
How do I get a Montgomery car shipping price?
Give us both ZIP codes. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first date, and open or enclosed. Use the form on this page or call 888-709-9078.
Alabama is one of the easiest states in the country for an incoming car
This section is usually a list of hurdles. In Alabama it is short. That is worth knowing before you move.
No emissions testing at all
The Alabama Department of Revenue states it plainly: Alabama law does not provide for emissions testing of motor vehicles. Not in Montgomery, not anywhere in the state, for any vehicle. More on Alabama car shipping
No periodic safety inspection
There is no garage inspection to book and pass. The licensing official checks the VIN and the papers when ownership changes. That is a counter check, not an appointment.
Thirty days to register
A vehicle with valid registration from another state has 30 days from the date it enters Alabama to be registered here. That is more room than Florida's 10 days for the vehicle.
Alabama insurance first
The vehicle has to be covered by an Alabama liability policy before it can be registered. Arranging that before the car lands is the one thing that makes the visit quick.
So the whole list is a title application, proof of Alabama insurance and one counter visit. Compare that with a state wanting a safety inspection and a two-year emissions cycle. The difference is two appointments you never have to make.
Maxwell, Air University and why our military bookings cluster
Montgomery has a military rhythm that most cities do not. It changes when you should book.
Maxwell Air Force Base is home to Air University, which trains officers. Gunter Annex adds to the base's footprint in the city. Courses start on set dates. So officers and their families arrive and leave in waves, not steadily through the year.
The weeks either side of a course start date are our busiest here. If your report date is fixed, book as soon as you have orders. Do not wait for the movers to be sorted. A wider pickup window helps too.
We handle military moves constantly. Orders shift, so we stay flexible. Read your orders first: some vehicle moves are covered, and you should not pay twice. Military discount.
The student calendar sits alongside it. Alabama State, Auburn Montgomery, Huntingdon, Faulkner and Troy Montgomery are all here. Auburn's main campus is an hour east on I-85. Late August and mid-May are the tight weeks. Student discount.
Ninety miles to Birmingham, and when we would tell you to drive it
Birmingham is about 90 miles up I-65. Atlanta is about 160 up I-85. Those are the two cheapest rows on this page, and they deserve a straight answer rather than a sales pitch.
Both price at $450 to $600. If the car runs and you have the morning, driving it is usually the better call. We would rather say that than take the booking and have you work it out afterwards.
Four situations, and they come up constantly. A car that will not start and needs a winch. Two vehicles moving with one driver. A dealer, auction or body shop transfer where nobody has the time. And a customer who cannot make the drive themselves, which covers a lot of older and recovering customers. On all four, $450 to $600 is money well spent.
A running car, a free morning and a license. That is it. Call us anyway if you are not sure and we will say which we would do. The reason we built this company was that too many transport companies would not give you that answer straight.
The line moves out with distance. Nashville is about 390 miles and six hours. Houston and Dallas are 660 to 745 miles. That is a full day each way, plus a night somewhere. There the trailer wins on cost as well as wear.
An honest word about how far a carrier gets in a day
You will see 400 to 500 miles a day quoted around the auto transport industry. It is worth knowing where that figure comes from, because it is not what a loaded car carrier does.
Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day. A nine-car trailer also has eight other pickups and drop-offs to fit in. The route is built around all of them. A loaded carrier on a long run covers under 400 miles a day. Every transit range on this page is built on that, not on a best case.
Montgomery to Chicago is about 790 miles and we publish 2 to 3 days. A car with one driver could do it in a long day and a half. A carrier working legally, with eight other vehicles aboard, takes two or three.
In September 2026 we ran that math across every route table on this site. We fixed our own rows where they were too fast. A transit figure is a promise, so we would rather fix ours in public than leave them standing.
Weather, seasons and the best months to ship from Montgomery
Winter is mild here
Central Alabama roads stay open through the winter. On a January run to Chicago or Denver the weather is at the far end, not this one. Book a few days early and the timing looks after itself.
Hurricane season, inland
Montgomery sits about 170 miles inland. From August to October a Gulf storm usually means a slower day, not a cancelled run. We will tell you if a leg needs rerouting.
Summer is the busy stretch
June through August is moving season. The weeks around a term start are tighter still. Book further ahead and give a window, not a date.
December to March is calm
The quietest stretch on this corridor. If your dates are open and you would rather not think about it much, that is the window to aim for.
Spring is straightforward
March through May is settled weather at both ends of most routes. It is the easiest time to get a set week.
Course dates and term dates
Maxwell's course starts and the university calendars are the two local spikes. Both are published well in advance, which makes them easy to book around.
How Montgomery car shipping works
Get your price
We need both ZIP codes. It helps to know your neighborhood too, so we can plan the access. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first date, and open or enclosed.
Confirm the booking
Check the route, the transport type, the timing and the access at both ends. Then your price. The Smart Price Promise holds it from the moment you accept.
We assign a carrier
Your job goes to a vetted carrier, from a network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. We tell you who it is. Check their authority and insurance yourself.
Pickup
Standard pickup window is 6 days, expedited is 3 days, which is 72 hours. The driver walks the car with you and records its condition on the Bill of Lading. Then he loads.
On the road
1 to 9 days depending on distance, within federal driving-hour limits and around the other cars on the trailer. Call any time for an update.
Delivery
The driver calls as he gets close and agrees a safe, legal handover spot. Compare the car against the pickup report. Note anything before you sign, and it is yours.
Open, enclosed or expedited from Montgomery
Open transport
The basis for every figure in the table and the right choice for most cars, SUVs and pickups. It is the same kind of trailer that carries new vehicles out of the plant here.
Enclosed transport
About 80 percent above open. The right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything low to the ground.
Expedited pickup
Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same, because federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
A car that will not start
We can still move it if it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch. The extra starts at $200 and rises with the work involved. Tell us the street too, since a winch job needs more room.
Mid-size SUV or crossover
RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, Highlander, Santa Fe and similar. Add about $150 to the table figure.
Full-size pickup or three-row SUV
F-150, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Palisade and similar. Add about $300 to the table figure.
The carrier behind your Montgomery shipment
Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company. We arrange and manage your transport end to end. The truck itself belongs to a vetted carrier, from a network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide.
You will know who has your car
We give you the assigned carrier's name and USDOT number. Look them up on the FMCSA SAFER system and you can see their active authority and insurance before your car is loaded. Look us up too, under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368.
Carrier Cargo Insurance, the whole way
Your car travels under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance. Cover starts the moment it is loaded and ends when it is handed back. No terminal, no holding lot, no gap in between.

Who ships cars in and out of Montgomery
Military families
Maxwell Air Force Base and Gunter Annex sit inside the city. We move vehicles for service members constantly and stay flexible when orders shift.
State government moves
Montgomery is the state capital and the county seat. People arrive and leave on appointment and session calendars too.
Students
Alabama State, Auburn Montgomery, Huntingdon, Faulkner and Troy Montgomery are here, with Auburn an hour east. Late August and mid-May are tightest.
Manufacturing relocations
The auto plant and its suppliers bring engineers and managers in and out of the River Region. Often with two cars and a fixed start date.
Snowbirds
Florida is 2 days away and the Gulf Coast is 1. October to December going south, March to May coming back. Book both legs together if your dates are settled.
Dealers and auctions
The I-65 and I-85 corridor has an active dealer and auction market. Dealer shipping and auction pickups run on their own terms and timelines.

Written by Richard Avery
President, Smart Auto Move Inc
Richard Avery founded Smart Auto Move because too many auto transport companies were treating customers badly. There was no easy way to tell an honest company from the rest. He has worked in vehicle transport for over a decade, and writes about routes, pricing and carrier coordination. The figures here are stepped from lane prices already published across this site. They also draw on our own recent Southeast shipments. They are reviewed as the market moves.
