Mobile Alabama Car Shipping

Mobile Alabama Car Shipping & Auto Transport Updated September 2026

Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move  ·  USDOT 2887232  ·  MC 969368

Car shipping to or from Mobile runs $450 to $900 under 500 miles and $900 to $1,600 for most longer trips, on an open trailer. Those are national bands rather than a Mobile rate card, and we say why below. One thing here is unlike any other city page on this site: a share of the cars we move in Mobile begin or end at a dock rather than a driveway, and that changes the job.

How much does Mobile car shipping cost?

Operable mid-size vehicle, open trailer, reviewed September 2026. Grouped by driving distance, with the destinations each band reaches from here.

Distance from MobileWhere that reachesDays on the roadOpen transport
Under 500 miles SHORTPensacola, New Orleans, Montgomery, Birmingham, Jackson, Tallahassee, Atlanta, Memphis1 to 3 days$450 to $900

Over 2,500 milesSeattle, Portland7 to 10 days$1,600 to $2,500

Why there is no Mobile rate table here yet. We publish measured figures or we publish bands, and Alabama is a state where we have not completed enough loads to call a local number measured. Lifting a figure off Atlanta or New Orleans and putting a Mobile heading on it would be a guess in fancy dress. A proper Alabama rate check is something we want, and this page will carry real numbers once we have it.

These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest cost in moving a car and fuel prices move, so we review these figures as the market changes. The days begin when the car goes on the trailer; your collection window comes first. Enclosed transport runs about 80 percent more than open. Oversized, modified and non-running vehicles each price on their own terms. See how the national bands work.

Port of Mobile car shipping: when the trip starts or ends at a dock

Mobile is a working deepwater port with a finished-vehicle terminal, so cars arrive here by sea and leave here by sea. If yours is one of them, the road leg is ordinary auto transport with one unusual address on it.

What differs is not the driving. It is the collection itself, and knowing that in advance is the whole difference between a smooth day and a wasted one.

What we do, and what we do notWe move the car over the road, between the port and wherever it is going. The sea crossing and the import paperwork are separate jobs handled by separate people, and you will already have someone on those. Our part begins once the vehicle is released and ready to collect.
What a port collection needs from youThe release paperwork, the name the vehicle is held under, and a realistic date. A driver cannot simply turn up at a terminal gate the way he would at your house. Tell us it is a port pickup when you book rather than on the day, and we will plan the collection around the release rather than around a guess.

The commonest version of this is somebody relocating from overseas, or buying a vehicle abroad and having it shipped in. Both are ordinary work for us on the road side. The one piece of advice worth having: build a few days of slack between the vessel date and the day you want the car, because release timing is the part nobody controls precisely.

Mobile Car Shipping Questions

What people shipping to and from Mobile County actually ask, answered for this city rather than with national averages.

How much should I budget to ship a car in or out of Mobile?

Under 500 driving miles, which covers Pensacola, New Orleans, Montgomery, Birmingham, Atlanta and Memphis, reckon on $450 to $900. From 500 to 1,500 it becomes $900 to $1,600, and from there to 2,500 it is $1,250 to $2,100. Those are our national bands applied to Mobile, not Mobile-specific figures.

Why are there no Mobile-specific prices?

Alabama is a state where we have not run enough loads to call a local number measured, and lifting Atlanta's figure and putting a Mobile heading on it would be a guess in fancy dress. An Alabama rate check is on the list, and this page gets real numbers once we have one.

My car is arriving at the Port of Mobile. Can you collect it?

That is a job we do regularly, and it is the road leg rather than anything on the water. Mobile has a finished-vehicle terminal, so cars genuinely arrive and depart by sea here. Once the vehicle is released and ready, we move it from the port to wherever it is going.

What do you need for a port collection?

The release paperwork, the name the vehicle is held under, and a date that reflects reality. A driver cannot roll up to a terminal gate the way he would to your house. The important thing is to say it is a port pickup when you book rather than mentioning it on the day.

Do you handle the shipping across the ocean or the import paperwork?

Neither, and it is worth being clear about that. The sea crossing and the import side are separate jobs with separate paperwork, and you will have somebody dealing with them already. We take over once the car is on the ground and cleared to leave.

How much slack should I leave after the vessel arrives?

A few days. Release timing at a port is the piece nobody controls to the hour, so booking the road leg for the exact day the ship docks tends to create a scramble. Give it a little room and the collection becomes ordinary.

Why does the I-65 junction matter?

Because Mobile is the one Gulf city where the main east-west interstate meets a major north-south one. I-10 runs through and I-65 starts here, going to Montgomery, Birmingham, Nashville, Louisville and Indianapolis before Chicago. So a Midwest trip from Mobile is one highway rather than a patchwork of them.

Which destinations are the awkward ones from here?

Really only the Pacific Northwest. Seattle and Portland are the two that reach the top distance band, so treat those as three or four weeks of notice rather than two. East, west and north you are on good road from the first mile.

Does hurricane season stop shipping?

It moves dates rather than stopping work. Drivers watch Gulf weather closely, and a storm heading in means your car waits somewhere safe inland instead of driving into it. Expect that to cost a day or two and expect a phone call about it.

Is there anything specific about Mobile in a storm?

Yes, and it is the useful bit. I-65 north is an evacuation route, so in the days before a serious storm it fills with traffic heading inland and northbound capacity gets tight at exactly the wrong moment. Booking ahead of a forecast rather than into one is the whole trick.

When is the calmest time to ship?

December through April. No storm season, steadier scheduling, and usually the friendlier end of a band on price. If your dates are flexible and you would rather not think about weather at all, aim there.

How long does the whole thing take?

Two stages. Collection first, six days on standard service or three on expedited, counted from the date you name. Then the road: one to three days inside 500 miles, two to five up to 1,500, four to eight beyond that.

Why will you not commit to a delivery day?

Because eight or nine other cars share the trailer and the route dictates the order they come off in. Being an early drop or a late one moves your day more than a promise made a week out could cover. What you do get is a call the night before with a real time.

Is expedited worth paying for?

In storm season especially. It narrows your collection window from six days to three and leaves the driving untouched, since a driver's hours are federally fixed. Between August and October a tight window beats hoping the forecast holds.

Would you recommend enclosed on the coast?

It is a fairer question here than inland. Beyond the usual reasons, classics and low cars and fresh paint, salt air and summer squalls are harder on a finish than a dry run across Texas would be. Enclosed runs about 80 percent more than open, so weigh it against what the car means to you.

Can a truck get to my street in Mobile?

Across most of the area, yes. West Mobile, Theodore, Tillmans Corner, Saraland and Semmes have room, and so do Daphne, Spanish Fort and Fairhope across the bay. The narrow ones are downtown, Church Street East, De Tonti Square and the older Midtown streets under the oaks, where low branches matter as much as width.

What about Gulf Shores or Orange Beach?

Ordinary work, with one seasonal caveat. The beach roads are slow on a summer weekend, so a driver will aim for a weekday or an early hour if he can. Say which it is when you book and the timing gets planned rather than improvised.

Is there a Mobile office?

No office here and no yard. Mobile is a market we cover: carriers do the driving and our staff handle your order over the phone. The car travels from one address to another, so a counter would serve no purpose. Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Should I just drive it to New Orleans or Pensacola?

On a trip that short, probably. New Orleans is a couple of hours and Pensacola about one. Shipping starts making sense when you would have to buy a flight or a one-way rental to get home, when the car is a second vehicle nobody is riding in, when there are two cars and one of you, or when you bought it remotely.

What if the car does not run?

It travels on a winch-equipped truck. No fixed surcharge, so budget from $200 up depending on how difficult the car proves. Three yes-or-no answers decide the equipment: rolls, steers, brakes. Be straight even where the answer is no, since a driver who cannot load has lost the day.

Anything to do before the driver arrives?

Take the fuel down to about a quarter and give the car a wash, so the pickup report can record something meaningful. Photograph existing damage for your own records. Then mirrors in, antenna down, toll tag off, alarm disabled.

Can I put anything in the car?

Lightly, and the trunk only. Stay under roughly 100 pounds and leave anything irreplaceable at home. We know other companies refuse outright; we would sooner give you a workable rule. Household items are not what the carrier policy protects, and a hundred pounds a car is an extra half ton across a full deck.

Whose insurance is covering it?

The hauling carrier's, under Carrier Cargo Insurance. Holding one is a condition of getting work from us, and we check it is current before the car is loaded rather than after. A copy is yours on request, and it is worth checking your own policy too, since many reach a car in transit.

Does another company take over partway?

Never on our jobs. One trailer and one driver from Mobile through to the destination. The car is not parked in an interchange yard for somebody else to collect. Handover points are where damage claims tend to start, so we have designed them out.

Can someone else be there instead of me?

Yes. Add their name and a cell number to the booking. They need to be eighteen or over, willing to walk the car with the driver, and willing to sign the delivery report, since that signature is the document everything later gets measured against.

Will you call me trying to sell something?

Not from us. Outbound sales calling is simply not part of the business. Hold onto the number, shop it around, leave it a month. Pricing is free and so is booking, and our line is there whenever you would rather speak to somebody.

What the I-10 and I-65 junction does for Mobile auto transport

Mobile is the one place on the Gulf where the main east-west interstate meets a major north-south one, and that shapes which of your options are easy.

East and west on the I-10 car shipping route

I-10 is the southernmost coast-to-coast interstate and it runs straight through. New Orleans is a couple of hours west, Pensacola and Tallahassee east. These are busy two-way roads, which is the cheap kind.

Straight north on I-65 auto transport lanes

I-65 starts here and runs to Montgomery, Birmingham, Nashville, Louisville and Indianapolis before reaching Chicago. So Midwest destinations from Mobile are a single-highway trip rather than an awkward series of roads.

Where Mobile vehicle shipping gets harder

Nothing goes south, for obvious reasons, and the far Northwest is a genuine haul: Seattle and Portland are the only destinations that reach the top band. Everything else from here sits in the middle three.

The practical read is that Mobile is well placed for most of the country and awkward for very little of it. If your destination is east, west or north, you are on good road from the first mile. If it is the Pacific Northwest, plan three or four weeks of notice rather than two and treat it as the long trip it is.

Gulf Coast storm season and your Mobile car shipping dates

Hurricane season runs June through November and Mobile is squarely in it. The honest version is that it moves dates rather than stopping work, and there is one local detail worth knowing.

What a named storm does to auto transport here

Drivers track Gulf weather as a matter of routine. A storm heading this way means your car waits somewhere safe inland rather than being driven into it, and you get a call about it. That usually costs a day or two.

The evacuation effect on car shipping capacity

I-65 north is an evacuation route, and in the days before a serious storm it carries an enormous amount of traffic heading inland. Northbound capacity gets tight at exactly that moment. Booking ahead of a forecast rather than into it is the whole trick.

The quiet vehicle shipping window

December through April is calm, straightforward and usually the friendliest on price. If your dates are open and you would rather not think about weather at all, that is the stretch to aim for.

None of this makes summer a bad time to ship, and plenty of people do it without incident. It means a little slack in your dates is worth more between August and October than at any other point in the year. Tell us your window and we will be straight with you about what the forecast looks like.

Where Mobile auto transport collects and delivers

The Mobile area is mostly easy ground for a loaded carrier, on both sides of the bay.

The straightforward Mobile car shipping addresses

West Mobile, Theodore, Tillmans Corner, Saraland and Semmes have driveways, turning room and quick access to I-10 or I-65. Across the bay, Daphne, Spanish Fort and Fairhope are the same. Collection at the address is the ordinary outcome.

The tighter Mobile vehicle shipping streets

Downtown, the Church Street East and De Tonti Square blocks, Midtown and the older streets under the oaks are narrow, with parking on both sides and low branches. A wider road nearby handles it, agreed when the load is booked and at no charge.

Down the coast on longer auto transport runs

Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley are ordinary work and busy in season. A summer Saturday on the beach roads is slow going, so drivers aim for a weekday or an early hour where they can.

Mobile is a market we serve rather than an office we staff, and on a job like this it costs you nothing. Your car is collected from one address and delivered to another, and the national line on 888-709-9078 is answered by people who can see your order. Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609.

Open, enclosed or expedited Mobile vehicle shipping

Three ways to move the same car, and on this stretch of I-10 none of them means a long wait.

Open Mobile car shipping

All the pricing above rests on it. Picture the double-deck trailer that delivers showroom stock to a dealership, carrying around ten vehicles with no roof. Open rigs are most of what runs I-10, so this is also the quickest to place.

Enclosed Mobile auto transport

Around 80 percent more than open. Right for a classic, something low, or fresh paint. Worth a thought on the Gulf Coast for a different reason as well: salt air and summer squalls are harder on a finish than a dry inland run would be.

Expedited Mobile vehicle shipping

Turns a six-day collection window into three. The driving is untouched, since federal rules fix a driver's hours. The place it earns its money here is storm season, when a tight window beats hoping the forecast holds.

Is your car insured on a Mobile car shipping order?

Covered every mile, yes. The bit that usually goes unexplained is whose policy carries it, so here it is straight.

What covers your Mobile auto transport order

A policy called Carrier Cargo Insurance, carried by the haulier rather than by Smart Auto Move. It is in force the instant the car goes up the ramp and stays in force until it comes back down. The certificate reaches us when the carrier accepts the job, and we pass it on the moment you ask.

One vehicle shipping driver from start to finish

One person loads the car in Mobile and that same person takes it off the trailer at the far end. It does not pause in a yard and it does not change hands. Ask anyone in this trade where disputes come from and they will say transfers, which is why your car never makes one.

All of it is checkable in about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup: enter a USDOT number and it returns that carrier's operating authority and the insurance filed against it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
