Charlotte NC Car Shipping and Auto Transport
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car to or from Charlotte, North Carolina is typically $450 to $2,100 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 9 days in transit time. Greensboro is about 95 miles away at $450 to $600. Seattle reaches $1,900 to $2,100 over about 2,830 miles. One thing sets Charlotte apart, and most pages will not tell you: leaving costs more than arriving. This page publishes both directions and shows you the gap.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
Leaving Charlotte costs more than arriving, and here is the proof
Almost every car shipping page prices a route by its distance. Distance matters. But on a Carolinas lane, direction matters just as much, and we can show you real numbers rather than a claim.
We dispatched Raleigh to Dallas at $1,325 to $1,475 over about 1,190 miles. Five loads, this summer. That figure is published on our Raleigh to Houston page and it is what the lane really cost.
We publish Dallas to Raleigh at $1,025 to $1,225 over about 1,180 miles. Same road, other way, about $300 less. It is published on our Dallas to Raleigh page.
Why the gap exists. More cars want to leave the Carolinas than arrive. So a truck loading here fills up easily and a truck arriving does not. A driver prices that in. It is not a surcharge and nobody is being clever with you. It is simply which way the traffic runs.
What you can do with that. If your car is coming into Charlotte, you are already on the cheaper side of the lane. If it is leaving, a wider pickup window gives us more trucks to choose from, and that is the single biggest thing in your control. Either way we tell you the real figure up front.
And Charlotte prices under Raleigh on the same inbound lanes. We publish Dallas to Charlotte at $975 to $1,175 and Dallas to Raleigh at $1,025 to $1,225. Houston to Charlotte is $1,000 to $1,200 and Houston to Raleigh is $1,075 to $1,275. Charlotte sits about 140 miles closer to Texas, and both pages have said so since before this one existed.

| Any route over 2,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | San Francisco, Seattle, Portland | Over 2,500 miles | 7 to 10 days | $1,600 to $2,500 |
Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the biggest cost in hauling a car. It tracks the market, so we review the rows against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Why some Charlotte rows sit below the national band. The bands are the nationwide picture. Charlotte is not a nationwide average. Two interstates cross here and the Carolinas to Florida corridor is one of the busiest in the country, so trucks run it constantly. Where a Charlotte figure comes in under the band, the Charlotte figure is the one we publish. Orlando is the clearest case, and it is anchored to a rate card lane we already publish on our Raleigh to Orlando page.
Where these figures come from. The inbound block is lifted straight off pages we already publish, not recalculated: Dallas to Raleigh gives Dallas to Charlotte at $975 to $1,175, Houston to Raleigh gives Houston to Charlotte at $1,000 to $1,200, and our Germantown, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Chesapeake and Miami pages supply the rest. The outbound block is stepped off our measured Raleigh lanes. Nothing here contradicts a figure we publish elsewhere.
Why the shortest inbound row is not the cheapest one. Norfolk and Chesapeake reach up to $800 over about 320 miles, while Montgomery reaches $725 over 415. Hampton Roads is an expensive market to leave, the same way the Carolinas are. It is the thesis of this page showing up in two adjacent rows: the market you start in can matter more than the miles.
How to read the two middle columns. The distance and the day range go together in order. The shortest trip in a row takes the fewest days. The longest takes the most. A loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day, so read the ends of each range as a pair.
Charlotte Car Shipping Questions
The questions Charlotte and Mecklenburg County customers really ask, answered with this city's own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Charlotte?
The cost to ship a car to or from Charlotte, North Carolina is typically $450 to $2,100 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 9 days in transit time. Greensboro is about 95 miles away at $450 to $600. Seattle is about 2,830 miles at $1,900 to $2,100.
Why does leaving Charlotte cost more than arriving?
More cars want to leave the Carolinas than arrive. So a truck heading out is easier to fill than a truck heading in. Our own dispatched loads show the gap clearly, and this page publishes both directions.
How big is that gap, in real numbers?
On our Raleigh lanes it runs about $300. We dispatched Raleigh to Dallas at $1,325 to $1,475. We publish Dallas to Raleigh at $1,025 to $1,225. Same 1,190 miles, opposite direction.
Does Charlotte work the same way?
It does. The table on this page prices Charlotte outbound higher than Charlotte inbound on every lane where we hold figures for both. That is the honest picture and it is why we show it.
So should I wait for a better price?
No, but you can help yourself. A wider pickup window gives us more trucks to fit you into. If your car is arriving in Charlotte rather than leaving, you are already on the cheaper side.
Why is Charlotte a good city for car shipping?
Two interstates cross here. I-85 runs southwest to Atlanta and northeast toward Richmond. I-77 runs south to Columbia and north into Virginia. I-40 and I-95 are both close by.
Is Charlotte cheaper than Raleigh?
On inbound lanes, yes, by a little. We publish Dallas to Charlotte at $975 to $1,175 and Dallas to Raleigh at $1,025 to $1,225. Charlotte is about 140 miles closer to Texas.
How far is Greensboro from Charlotte?
About 95 miles up I-85. It is the shortest route here at $450 to $600, same day. Winston-Salem, High Point and Kannapolis price the same.
How far is Atlanta?
About 245 miles down I-85. We price that at $500 to $675 and deliver the same day. Greenville and Spartanburg sit on the same road.
How far is Raleigh?
About 170 miles east. Same day, $450 to $625. Durham, Chapel Hill and Cary price with it. If the car runs, driving it is often the better call.
How long does Charlotte car shipping take?
From 1 day on the Carolinas runs up to 9 days to the West Coast. Atlanta and Raleigh are same day. Chicago is 2 to 3 days. Los Angeles is 6 to 8.
When do the days start counting?
When the car goes on the trailer. Your pickup window comes first. That is 6 days as standard, or 3 days with expedited.
Do you pick up at my house in Charlotte?
Yes, door to door. The driver comes to your address wherever the truck can legally and safely get in. If your street is tight, we agree a wide spot nearby at booking.
What about Uptown?
Uptown is a 1770s grid, so the blocks are short and the curbs are busy. Trade Street and Tryon Street are the two originals. We usually load from a nearby lot rather than the street.
Do you serve the suburbs?
Yes. Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, Matthews, Mooresville, Cornelius, Davidson, Indian Trail, Pineville and Rock Hill SC all price with Charlotte. Give us the ZIP code.
Is my car insured while it ships?
Yes. Your car travels under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance. Cover starts when the car is loaded. It ends when the car is handed back to you.
Can I check the carrier's insurance first?
Yes. We give you the carrier's name and USDOT number. Look them up on the FMCSA SAFER system to see their active authority and insurance. Look us up under USDOT 2887232.
Who actually drives the truck?
A vetted carrier from our network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company. We arrange and manage the move.
Do you own the trucks, or do carriers haul the car?
Carriers haul the car. We handle the price, the routing, the paperwork and the updates. You get one phone number for the whole trip.
How do I know a carrier is safe?
Every carrier we assign holds active federal authority and current cargo insurance. We check both before the job goes out. You can check the same records yourself in a minute.
What is a Bill of Lading?
It is the condition report and the receipt in one. The driver walks the car with you at pickup and records how it looks. At delivery you compare, note anything, and sign.
What should I do before the driver arrives?
Wash it so the condition report is accurate. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Fold the mirrors and remove a toll tag. Take photos with a date on them.
Can I leave things in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it light. Keep it in the trunk or below the window line. Cargo insurance covers the vehicle rather than the contents, so valuables travel better with you.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes, as long as it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch. The extra starts at $200 and rises with the work involved.
Charlotte is a motorsports city. Do you handle race and collector cars?
We do, and it comes up here more than most cities. Roughly three quarters of the NASCAR industry's race teams, employees and drivers are based near Charlotte, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame is Uptown.
What do you need to know about a low car?
Ground clearance first. Then whether it runs, whether it has a battery cut-off, and whether it has been lowered. A low car needs a lift gate or long ramps, and that is easier to arrange at booking.
What does enclosed transport cost from Charlotte?
About 80 percent more than open. It is the right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic or a fresh restoration. Most daily drivers do not need it.
Do I need enclosed transport?
Most cars do not. Open carriers are what the factories use to deliver brand new vehicles. Choose enclosed when the car is rare, low, or freshly painted.
How much faster is expedited?
Expedited narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same. Federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
Can you promise a delivery date?
We give you a window and keep you posted as the truck moves. Weather, traffic and the other cars on the trailer all move the clock. A window we can hold beats a date we cannot.
How many cars are on the truck with mine?
Usually up to nine on an open trailer. The route is built around all of them. That is why a loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day.
Can I track my car?
Call or message us any time. We will tell you where it is and when it is due. You also have the driver's number once the car is loaded.
How far in advance should I book?
One to two weeks suits most Charlotte routes. Book earlier for enclosed, and earlier again for a race weekend or a specific week in summer.
Does North Carolina require a safety inspection?
Yes. The NCDMV puts it plainly: a motor vehicle must pass an annual safety inspection before it can be registered in North Carolina, or before the registration is renewed.
Does Charlotte require an emissions test?
Yes. Mecklenburg County is one of 19 North Carolina counties that require an emissions inspection. Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Union and Rowan are also on the list.
Is any car exempt from the emissions test?
Two useful exemptions. A vehicle within the three most recent model years with under 70,000 miles is exempt. And a vehicle older than 30 years needs no inspection in any county.
So a classic car needs no inspection here?
If it is older than 30 years, that is right, in any North Carolina county. Good news if you are moving a collector car into Charlotte.
How long do I have to register in North Carolina?
You register when you take a job here, or when the reciprocity period with your old state runs out, whichever comes first. That period is usually 30 days.
What do I need to register the car?
The title, an MVR-1 title application, a valid license, and North Carolina insurance. Out-of-state policies are not accepted, so sort the policy before the car lands.
Which is cheaper, shipping or driving to Atlanta?
Driving, most of the time. It is 245 miles and about four hours. Shipping makes sense when the car will not start, when two cars move with one driver, or when nobody can make the trip.
At what distance does shipping start to make sense?
Around 600 miles, which from here is New York or Tampa. Past that you are looking at a long day each way plus a night somewhere. The trailer wins on cost and on wear.
Why are your Florida prices lower than your national band?
Because the Carolinas to Florida corridor is one of the busiest in the country. Trucks run it constantly, so the real figures beat the national average. We publish the real figures.
Do you ship trucks and SUVs?
Yes. A mid-size SUV or crossover adds about $150 to the table figure. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV adds about $300.
Do you ship motorcycles?
Yes. They usually travel on a dedicated bike carrier, or crated inside an enclosed trailer. Tell us the model and we will price it properly.
Do you ship to and from dealers and auctions?
Yes. Dealer transfers and auction pickups run on their own timelines and paperwork. The Charlotte corridor has an active market for both.
What is the cheapest route from Charlotte?
Greensboro at about 95 miles, $450 to $600. Columbia SC and Asheville match it. Everything inside about 250 miles is same-day work.
What is the longest route you ship from Charlotte?
Seattle, about 2,830 miles, $1,900 to $2,100 over 7 to 9 days. San Francisco is about 2,700 miles and Los Angeles about 2,420.
How much to ship a car from Charlotte to Texas?
Dallas is about 1,040 miles at $1,225 to $1,400 over 3 to 4 days. Houston is about 1,060 miles at the same price. Coming the other way costs less.
How much to ship a car from Charlotte to Florida?
Jacksonville is about 390 miles at $575 to $750. Orlando is about 530 miles at $600 to $750. Miami is about 730 miles at $800 to $975.
How much to ship a car from Charlotte to California?
Los Angeles is about 2,420 miles at $1,700 to $1,900 over 6 to 8 days. San Francisco is about 2,700 miles at $1,850 to $2,050.
How much to ship a car from Charlotte to New York?
About 635 miles at $800 to $1,000 over 2 to 3 days. That covers all five boroughs, plus Newark and Iselin.
How much to ship a car from Charlotte to Chicago?
About 760 miles at $875 to $1,075 over 2 to 3 days. Our Chicago office is at 742 E 87th Pl and the number there is 312-300-7773.
Do prices change with the season?
They move with demand and with fuel. Summer is busiest. The snowbird runs to Florida fill up from October, and fill up northbound from March.
What about winter in Charlotte?
Charlotte winters are mild and the roads stay open. An ice day can slow a local pickup by a day. Winter usually shows up at the far end of a long route instead.
Does hurricane season matter here?
Charlotte sits inland in the Piedmont at about 751 feet. A coastal storm mostly means a slower day rather than a cancelled run. We will tell you if a leg needs rerouting.
Who ships cars in and out of Charlotte?
Corporate movers above all. Charlotte is the second-largest banking center in the United States, so relocations run in both directions all year.
Do you ship cars for students?
Yes. UNC Charlotte, Queens, Johnson C. Smith, Davidson and Central Piedmont are all here. Late August and mid-May are the tight weeks.
Do you offer a military discount?
Yes. Fort Bragg is about three hours east and there is steady movement through the Carolinas. Tell us you are service-connected when you ask for the price.
Does the price change if I am flexible on dates?
A wider window gives us more runs to fit you into, and that usually works in your favor. If your dates are fixed, tell us and we plan around them.
Is the quoted price the price I pay?
Yes. That is the Smart Price Promise. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same.
What would change the price after I book?
Only a change on your side. A different vehicle, a different address, a car that will not start, or a pickup outside the agreed window. Tell us early and we reprice it openly.
When do I pay?
You pay when the car is delivered, at the price you were quoted. We will set out the payment methods the carrier accepts before pickup.
What if something is damaged?
Note it on the Bill of Lading before you sign, and photograph it. Then call us. The claim goes to the carrier's cargo insurance and we help you through it.
Can somebody else hand over or receive the car?
Yes. Give us their name and number. They can sign the Bill of Lading at either end. Make sure they check the car properly first.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico?
Not at present. Service covers the lower 48 states.
Do you have an office in Charlotte?
Not a staffed one. Our four staffed offices are Lakewood WA, Los Angeles CA, Chicago IL and Kissimmee FL. Charlotte is served by our carrier network on 888-709-9078.
Where is Smart Auto Move based?
Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our nearest service area to Charlotte is Portsmouth, Virginia.
Is my car stored anywhere along the way?
No. It goes from your address onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance until it is handed back. There is no terminal in between.
Are you licensed?
Yes. USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Smart Auto Move is BBB A+ accredited, and our BBB record is under our Raleigh address.
How do I get a Charlotte car shipping price?
Give us both ZIP codes. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first date, and open or enclosed. Use the form on this page or call 888-709-9078.
Two interstates cross here, and one of them starts nearby
Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, with a population of 874,579 at the 2020 census. That makes it the 14th most populous city in the country. It sits in the Carolina Piedmont at about 751 feet above sea level, and it covers most of Mecklenburg County.
I-85 and I-77 cross in Charlotte. I-85 runs southwest to Atlanta and northeast through Greensboro toward Richmond. I-77 runs south to Columbia and north into Virginia. I-40 and I-95 are both within easy reach. That is a real crossroads rather than a stop off one highway.
Trucks pass you anyway
A carrier running Atlanta to Richmond, or Columbia to Cleveland, is already on your doorstep. It rarely has to leave its route to reach you, and the short rows show it.
Uptown is a 1770s grid
Surveyors laid the streets out in a grid in 1770. Trade Street and Tryon Street are the two originals. The blocks are short and the curbs are busy, so we usually load from a nearby lot.
The suburbs are easy
Concord, Huntersville, Matthews, Mooresville, Indian Trail and Rock Hill have wide roads and room to turn. Most Charlotte bookings load at the door without a second thought.
Banking moves people
Charlotte is the second-largest banking center in the United States, after New York City. Corporate relocations run in both directions all year, which is why our Charlotte book never really has an off season.
Rolling ground, few problems
The Piedmont rolls but it does not climb. There are no mountain passes and no coastal bridges on a Charlotte pickup. Access here is about street width, not terrain.
Tell us the ZIP code
Charlotte addresses spread across two states once you count Rock Hill and Fort Mill. The ZIP code settles the routing in one line.
Charlotte is a motorsports city, so we talk about enclosed transport properly
On most city pages, enclosed transport gets a paragraph. Charlotte earns more than that.
Roughly three quarters of the NASCAR industry's race teams, employees and drivers are based near Charlotte. The city is the major center of the U.S. motorsports industry, and the NASCAR Hall of Fame is Uptown. So the cars we are asked to move here include a lot that are low, rare, freshly painted or simply irreplaceable.
What we need to know about a low car
Ground clearance first. Then whether it runs, whether it has a battery cut-off, and whether it has been lowered. A low car needs a lift gate or long ramps. Arranging that at booking is far easier than at the curb.
What enclosed actually costs
About 80 percent above open. For a classic, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything with low bodywork, that is money well spent. For a daily driver it usually is not, and we will say so.
A useful North Carolina rule
A vehicle older than 30 years needs no inspection in any North Carolina county. If you are moving a genuine classic into Charlotte, that is one job off the list entirely.
Race weekends fill up
The weeks around a major race weekend are the busiest for enclosed work here. Book earlier if your dates fall in one, and give a window rather than a single day.
North Carolina paperwork, and the three exemptions worth knowing
North Carolina asks for more than some states. It also hands out three exemptions that take most of the work back out.
An annual safety inspection
The NCDMV states it plainly: a motor vehicle must pass an annual safety inspection before it can be registered in North Carolina, or before the registration is renewed. Garages across Mecklenburg County do them. More on North Carolina car shipping
Emissions in Mecklenburg
Mecklenburg is one of 19 North Carolina counties that require an emissions inspection. Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Union and Rowan are on the list too, so most of the metro is covered.
Exemption one: a new car
A vehicle within the three most recent model years, with under 70,000 miles on it, is exempt from emissions testing. A lot of relocating households qualify without realizing it.
Exemption two: a classic
A vehicle older than 30 years needs no inspection in any county. That is the whole requirement gone, statewide.
Exemption three: the 90-day window
The inspection must be completed within 90 days of renewing the registration. So you are not booking a garage visit and a DMV visit for the same afternoon.
North Carolina insurance first
The NCDMV does not accept out-of-state policies. Arrange the North Carolina policy before the car lands and the counter visit is quick. You register when you take a job here, or when your old state's reciprocity runs out, usually 30 days.
Four hours to Atlanta, and when we would tell you to drive it
Atlanta is about 245 miles down I-85. Raleigh is about 170 miles east. Greensboro is 95. Those are the cheapest rows on this page, and they deserve a straight answer.
They all start at $450 to $600. If the car runs and you have the morning, driving it is usually the better call. We would rather say that than take the booking and have you work it out later.
Four situations, and they come up constantly. A car that will not start and needs a winch. Two vehicles moving with one driver. A dealer, auction or body shop transfer where nobody has the time. And a customer who cannot make the drive themselves. On all four, $450 to $600 is money well spent.
A running car, a free morning and a license. That is it. Call us anyway if you are not sure and we will say which we would do. We built this company because too many transport companies would not give you that answer straight.
The line moves out with distance. New York is about 635 miles and eleven hours. Tampa is about 600. Past that you are looking at a long day each way plus a night somewhere, and the trailer wins on cost and on wear.
An honest word about how far a carrier gets in a day
You will see 400 to 500 miles a day quoted around the auto transport industry. It is worth knowing where that figure comes from. It is not what a loaded car carrier does.
Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day. A nine-car trailer also has eight other pickups and drop-offs to fit in. The route is built around all of them. A loaded carrier on a long run covers under 400 miles a day. Every transit range on this page is built on that, not on a best case.
Charlotte to Chicago is about 760 miles and we publish 2 to 3 days. A car with one driver could do it in a long day and a half. A carrier working legally, with eight other vehicles aboard, takes two or three.
In September 2026 we ran that math across every route table on this site. We fixed our own rows where they were too fast. A transit figure is a promise, so we would rather fix ours in public.
Seasons on the Charlotte corridor
Snowbirds set the Florida rhythm
Southbound fills up from October to December. Northbound fills up from March to May. Book both legs together if your dates are settled and it is simpler for everyone.
Summer is the busy stretch
June through August is relocation season, and corporate moves cluster there too. Book further ahead and give a window rather than a single date.
Winter is mild here
Charlotte roads stay open through most winters. An ice day can slow a local pickup. Winter usually shows up at the far end of a long route instead.
Coastal storms, inland city
Charlotte sits in the Piedmont at about 751 feet. A coastal storm mostly means a slower day, not a cancelled run. We will tell you if a leg needs rerouting.
Race weekends
The weeks around a major race weekend are tight, especially for enclosed. The calendar is published well ahead, which makes it easy to plan around.
Term dates
UNC Charlotte, Queens, Johnson C. Smith, Davidson and Central Piedmont all move students. Late August and mid-May are the tight weeks.
How Charlotte car shipping works
Get your price
We need both ZIP codes. It helps to know your neighborhood too, so we can plan the access. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first date, and open or enclosed.
Confirm the booking
Check the route, the transport type, the timing and the access at both ends. Then your price. The Smart Price Promise holds it from the moment you accept.
We assign a carrier
Your job goes to a vetted carrier, from a network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. We tell you who it is. Check their authority and insurance yourself.
Pickup
Standard pickup window is 6 days, expedited is 3 days, which is 72 hours. The driver walks the car with you and records its condition on the Bill of Lading. Then he loads.
On the road
1 to 9 days depending on distance, within federal driving-hour limits and around the other cars on the trailer. Call any time for an update.
Delivery
The driver calls as he gets close and agrees a safe, legal handover spot. Compare the car against the pickup report. Note anything before you sign, and it is yours.
Open, enclosed or expedited from Charlotte
Open transport
The basis for every figure in the table. It is the right choice for most cars, SUVs and pickups, and it is what the factories use for brand new vehicles.
Enclosed transport
About 80 percent above open. The right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything low to the ground.
Expedited pickup
Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same. Federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
A car that will not start
We can still move it if it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch. The extra starts at $200 and rises with the work involved.
Mid-size SUV or crossover
RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, Highlander, Rogue and similar. Add about $150 to the table figure.
Full-size pickup or three-row SUV
F-150, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition and similar. Add about $300 to the table figure.

President, Smart Auto Move Inc
Richard Avery founded Smart Auto Move because too many auto transport companies were treating customers badly. There was no easy way to tell an honest company from the rest. He has worked in vehicle transport for over a decade, and writes about routes, pricing and carrier coordination. The figures on this page come from lanes already published across this site, and from loads Smart Auto Move dispatched through the Carolinas. They are reviewed as the market moves.
