Dallas to San Diego Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car from Dallas to San Diego is typically $1,150 to $1,300 on an open trailer, and takes between three to five days in transit time. The run is about 1,360 miles on the lowest, warmest road across the country, which is why it holds its schedule all twelve months of the year.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Dallas to San Diego car shipping cost?
Every figure below is a running vehicle on an open trailer, door to door, checked September 2026. The return trip from San Diego to Dallas prices the same.
| Vehicle | Transport | Days on the road | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-size car or sedan MOST BOOKED | Open | 3 to 5 days | $1,150 to $1,300 |
| Mid-size SUV or crossover | Open | 3 to 5 days | $1,300 to $1,450 |
| Full-size pickup or three-row SUV | Open | 3 to 5 days | $1,400 to $1,600 |
| Mid-size car, fully covered | Enclosed | 3 to 6 days | $2,050 to $2,350 |
| Car that does not run | Open, winch loaded | 3 to 5 days | $200 upward on the open price |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. See how our national bands work.
San Diego is the best value in California from Dallas
Set our three published California figures out of the Dallas area next to each other and the order is clear.
| California destination | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Diego BEST VALUE | About 1,360 miles | 3 to 5 days | $1,150 to $1,300 |
| Los Angeles and Orange County | About 1,440 miles | 3 to 5 days | $1,175 to $1,325 |
| San Francisco and the Bay Area | About 1,770 miles | 4 to 6 days | $1,375 to $1,525 |
| Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
San Diego comes in below Los Angeles and well below the Bay Area, and it is also the shortest of the three. That is unusual, because on most long lanes the busier city is the cheaper one. Here the mileage and the price line up, because the southern road runs straight at San Diego and the truck does not have to climb anything to get there.
If your car is going somewhere between the two, say Temecula, Murrieta or south Orange County, tell us the town and we will price it off whichever row it really belongs to rather than rounding up.
Dallas to San Diego Car Shipping Questions
The questions we get asked most on this route, answered with its own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Dallas to San Diego?
$1,150 to $1,300 for a running mid-size car on an open trailer. A mid-size SUV runs $1,300 to $1,450 and a full-size pickup $1,400 to $1,600.
How long does Dallas to San Diego car shipping take?
Three to five days on the road once the car is loaded, counted from the end of your pickup window rather than the day you book.
How far is it from Dallas to San Diego?
About 1,360 miles by the road a carrier uses: I-20 west to El Paso, I-10 across Arizona, then I-8 down through Yuma.
Is San Diego cheaper than Los Angeles from Dallas?
Yes, slightly. San Diego is $1,150 to $1,300 and Los Angeles is $1,175 to $1,325, and San Diego is also about 80 miles closer. On this corridor the mileage and the price move together.
Does winter affect this route?
Very little, and that is the best thing about it. There is no mountain pass between Dallas and San Diego, so January timing looks much like June's. The northern routes are the ones that lose a day to snow.
What about summer heat?
Drivers on the Yuma stretch often run at night through July and August. That is a scheduling choice rather than a delay, and the delivery window stays the same.
When does the truck actually show up?
Inside a six day window that opens on the first date you give us. If a date is fixed, expedited service brings that window down to three days.
Do you come to my address in the Dallas area?
Yes, in most of the Metroplex. The grid is wide and the suburbs are newer, so a nine-car trailer reaches the door. Downtown high-rises, Uptown, Deep Ellum and gated entrances with a height bar are handed over at a nearby lot, about ten minutes.
Do you deliver anywhere in San Diego County?
Yes. Chula Vista, El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, Poway, Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Encinitas are door deliveries. La Jolla village, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Hillcrest, North Park and Coronado are met on a wider street close by.
Is there a Smart Auto Move office near San Diego?
The closest staffed office is in Los Angeles, at 5111 Harold Way, Suite 301, on 213-766-0064, about 120 miles up I-5. That team covers Southern California.
Is there an office in the Dallas area?
McKinney, about 30 miles north of downtown Dallas, is one of our six service areas. Scheduling is on the national line, 888-709-9078, and the car is collected at your own address.
Do I need to drop the car anywhere?
No. Every shipment is door to door. The car goes from your Texas address to your San Diego County address, and nothing is stored in between.
Is the price the same coming back?
Yes. San Diego to Dallas prices in the same ranges over the same distance, so a return move or a round trip plans on the same figures.
What does enclosed transport cost on this lane?
About 80 percent above the open price, so roughly $2,050 to $2,350 for a mid-size car. It suits a classic, an exotic or fresh paint, and the West Texas and Arizona stretches throw enough grit around to make it worth considering.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes. A winch does the loading, and that adds $200 or more to the running price. The car just needs to roll, steer and brake. Say so when you ask for a price.
Can you take a lifted truck?
Yes, on the right trailer. A lift kit, big tires, a roof rack or a long-bed dually all change how much room the truck needs. Tell us up front and the price comes back accurate.
How soon do I register the car in California?
Within 20 days of moving to California or starting a job there. It is a shorter window than Texas allows, so it is worth putting in the calendar before the truck arrives.
Does my car need a smog check in California?
Most gasoline cars do as part of registering. Electric vehicles are exempt, and so are a number of newer models. Nothing is needed on the Texas side, since Texas ended the annual safety inspection for most non-commercial vehicles at the start of 2025.
Do you handle military PCS moves on this route?
Often. Naval Base San Diego, Coronado, Miramar and Camp Pendleton sit at one end and Fort Cavazos, Joint Base San Antonio, Dyess and Sheppard at the other. The military car shipping page covers what to have ready while orders are still being cut.
Do I have to be there at both ends?
Someone does. A friend, relative, neighbor or colleague works, as long as they are eighteen and can walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report.
What does the Smart Price Promise mean?
The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. Nothing is added on our side after you book.
Does asking for a price put me on a call list?
No. We make no outbound sales calls at all. The only contact is about your own shipment, plus the driver on pickup and delivery day.
Who insures the car while it travels?
Carrier Cargo Insurance, held by the driver's own company. The policy gets checked before your car is assigned, and the certificate comes to you by email if you ask.
Can I pack anything in the car?
Keep it clear. The insurance covers the car itself, not what is packed inside, and a full trailer notices the extra weight. Anything that has to go should be light and out of sight.
Should I take the toll tag off?
Yes. A TollTag or TxTag left on the glass can read as the truck passes gantries on the way out, which leaves you with charges that take time to unwind.
How much fuel should I leave?
A quarter tank does it. That covers loading, unloading and the drive away, and it keeps weight off the trailer.
How does payment work?
The booking takes a deposit. The balance is paid when the car lands. Cash, certified checks and cards all work, and the driver says which one they have with them.
What happens if there is damage on arrival?
Write it on the delivery report while the driver is still there, and photograph it. The two reports together are what the carrier's insurance uses, and our Los Angeles team works the claim with you.
Can you move an electric vehicle?
Yes, and this is a good route for one. Charge it to about half before pickup, leave the cable in the car, and remember an EV is exempt from the California smog check.
Can you move a motorcycle?
Yes, on bike-ready equipment. Every machine gets its own price instead of a car-table figure, so tell us the make and model.
Can two cars go together?
Yes, and two vehicles from the same DFW address to the same San Diego address usually cost less per car than two separate bookings.
Can you collect from a dealership or an auction?
Yes. Send the lot address, the business name, a phone number and the hours it is open. The driver takes it from there.
How far ahead should I book?
One to two weeks covers most of the year on this lane, and because the road is reliable there is less need to build in a weather buffer than on a northern route. Summer and month ends run busier.
What should I send you for a price?
The pickup ZIP in DFW, the town in San Diego County, the car's year, make and model, whether it starts, and the first date it is free. Use the form on this page or call 888-709-9078.
The road that never closes
This is the most dependable long route in the country for a car carrier, and it is worth knowing why before you pick your dates.
West out of Dallas on I-20 through Abilene, Midland and Odessa, onto I-10 at El Paso, across to Tucson and Phoenix, then I-8 at Casa Grande and down through Yuma into San Diego.
The highest point on the whole run is the Laguna descent into San Diego County, and I-8 is kept clear. There is no Donner Pass and no Flagstaff, which is where the northern routes lose a day in winter.
In practice that means January prices and January timing look much like June's on this lane. The one summer note is heat rather than snow: through July and August drivers on the Yuma stretch often move at night, which is a scheduling detail rather than a delay.
It also makes this a good corridor to book on a tight date. If a closing, a start date or a reporting date will not move, expedited service brings the pickup window down from six days to three and the road itself behaves.
Where we collect across Dallas and Fort Worth
Pickups run right across the Metroplex: Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Richardson, Garland, Mesquite, Rockwall, Irving, Las Colinas, Arlington, Grand Prairie, Carrollton, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Southlake, Grapevine, Keller, Denton and Waxahachie.
DFW is one of the easier metros in the country for a nine-car trailer. The grid is wide and the suburbs are newer, so the truck reaches the door in most neighborhoods. In downtown Dallas and Fort Worth, in Uptown and Deep Ellum, and at gated entrances with a height bar, the driver picks a nearby lot off the highway instead, which takes about ten minutes.

There is more on that end on the McKinney car shipping page and the Dallas car shipping page, and every Texas rate sits on the Texas car shipping page.
Delivery across San Diego County
San Diego is a spread-out county and the delivery plan follows the freeways rather than the city limits.
Chula Vista, Eastlake, El Cajon, Santee, La Mesa, Poway, Escondido, San Marcos, Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Mira Mesa, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and Otay Ranch.
Downtown, Little Italy, La Jolla village, Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, Hillcrest, North Park and Coronado. The older grids are narrow and some have height limits, so the driver uses a wider street or a lot nearby.
Our nearest staffed office to San Diego is in Los Angeles, about 120 miles up I-5, which is the team that handles Southern California.

Registering your car in California
California asks for two things when you bring a car in, and both are quick once the car has landed.
- You have 20 days to register the vehicle after you move to California or start a job here. That is a shorter window than Texas allows, so it is worth putting in the calendar before the truck arrives.
- A smog check is part of registering most gasoline cars. Electric vehicles are exempt, and so are a number of newer models.
- Texas does not ask for anything on the way out. It ended the annual safety inspection for most non-commercial vehicles at the start of 2025, so the California smog check is the only test on this move.
- Bring the Texas title, the current registration and proof of California insurance to a DMV office or an authorized registration service.
Timing tip: a car picked up in Dallas on a Monday is usually in San Diego by the end of the week, which leaves plenty of the 20 days to spare.

Naval Base San Diego, Coronado, Miramar and Camp Pendleton at one end, Fort Cavazos, Joint Base San Antonio, Dyess and Sheppard at the other. PCS orders keep this lane busy all year.
Job relocations
Texas and Southern California trade workers constantly, and a second car usually travels rather than being driven out.

Open, enclosed or expedited to San Diego
Open transport carries nearly every car on this lane and it is what the table prices. Enclosed is the choice for a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and on this route it does one specific job: the West Texas and Arizona stretches throw a lot of grit at a windshield. Add about 80 percent to the open price.
Expedited narrows the pickup window from six days to three, which is the part of the timeline worth buying when a date is fixed. The open and enclosed guide sets the two out side by side.
A car that will not start is welcome on this lane as well. It goes up on a winch, and that puts $200 or more on the running figure. Say so early and the right truck is booked.
The carrier taking your car west
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole trip, with no handoff along the way. Active FMCSA authority and a current insurance filing are the first two checks and nothing goes further without them. After that it comes down to the trailer, how regularly that driver works the I-10 corridor, and what their last few deliveries looked like.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from the Dallas pickup through to the San Diego delivery, and the certificate is emailed to you on request. Our own record sits on SAFER for anyone to check, at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
