Nationwide Car Shipping & Car Moving Price Quotes
Nationwide Car Shipping Quotes
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
Shipping a car anywhere in the mainland United States costs $450 to $900 under 500 miles, $900 to $1,600 out to 1,500 miles, and $1,600 to $2,500 at the coast to coast end, on an open trailer. Four bands, published in full below. What we will not give you is a single national average, because across a country this size that number would be honest about nothing. The good news is that the bands are narrow enough to plan with, and once we quote your actual route we hold that price.
How much does it cost to ship a car nationwide?
Operable mid-size vehicle, open trailer, reviewed September 2026. Find the row your driving distance falls in and you have your starting point.
| Distance | What that covers | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 500 miles | Neighboring states and regional moves | 1 to 3 days | $450 to $900 |
| 500 to 1,500 miles MOST COMMON | Metro to metro along the main interstates | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
| 1,500 to 2,500 miles | Most of the country to most of the country | 4 to 8 days | $1,250 to $2,100 |
| Over 2,500 miles | True coast to coast, corner to corner | 7 to 10 days | $1,600 to $2,500 |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the largest single cost in moving a car and fuel prices move, so we review these ranges as the market changes. The days shown are road days; your collection window comes before them. Enclosed transport runs about 80 percent more than open. Oversized, modified and non-running vehicles are each priced on their own terms. Where we have enough completed loads to publish measured figures for a specific route, those are better than a band and some of them come in below it, which is why our coast to coast routes are published separately. See how the national bands work.
Why there is no national average price for moving a car
Ask the internet what car shipping costs and you get a single figure. It is the most quoted number in this industry and it is the least useful, because it is the average of a 300 mile hop and a 2,800 mile haul. Nobody ships an average car an average distance.
What actually sets your price is narrower and more knowable than that. The driving distance puts you in one of the four bands above. Then the route decides where inside the band you sit: how much traffic already moves the way your car is going, how easy both addresses are to reach, the size and condition of the vehicle, and the time of year. None of those are mysterious, and we will talk you through all of them.
This is the whole reason the Smart Price Promise exists. We can promise the quote holds because we work it out from your route in the first place rather than from a national figure that was always going to need revising. If something genuinely changes, a different car, a different address, a vehicle that turns out not to start, we talk to you about it. A quiet week on the lane is our problem, not yours.
Nationwide Car Shipping Questions
The questions that come up most often when people are comparing auto transport quotes across the country.
Is there an average price for shipping a car in America?
Not a useful one, and that is the single most helpful thing to understand before you compare quotes. A 300 mile hop and a 2,800 mile haul are both car shipping, and averaging them produces a number that describes neither. What we publish instead is four distance bands, from $450 to $900 at the short end up to $1,600 to $2,500 coast to coast, so you can see where your own trip is likely to land.
How do I work out which band I am in?
Take the driving distance between your two addresses rather than the straight line on a map, then read across the table above. If you sit close to a boundary, tell us both addresses and we will place you properly. Most people are within a hundred miles of knowing their band before they ever pick up the phone.
Why would two trips of the same length cost different amounts?
Because distance sets the starting point and the route sets the rest. A lane with plenty of vehicles moving along it fills a trailer quickly and prices calmly. A lane with less traffic means the driver has to cover the miles to his next load out of your job. Same mileage, different economics, and it is worth knowing which one you are on.
What makes a lane busy or quiet?
Population at both ends, freight already running that way, and the season. Big metro to big metro along an interstate is about as busy as it gets. A small town two hours off the highway, delivered in the middle of winter, is the quiet end of the scale. Everything else sits somewhere between the two.
So should I avoid a quiet destination?
Not at all. Plenty of our work goes to places the trucks do not run past every day, and it gets there. The only thing worth doing differently is asking early, because a few days of flexibility on the collection date is usually all it takes to turn a quiet lane into a comfortable one. We would rather tell you that up front than surprise you with it.
What exactly is the Smart Price Promise?
The price we quote you is the price you pay. It holds as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition of the car and the shipping details stay the same as you described them. If nothing changes on your side, nothing changes on ours, and you can read the full terms on the promise page.
Can the price go up after I have booked?
Only if something about the job actually changes, and then we would talk to you about it first. A different car from the one quoted, an address moved to another town, a vehicle that turns out not to start, or a service upgrade you ask for will each move the number. A quiet week on the lane will not, because that is our problem rather than yours.
Why do some quotes come in lower than yours?
Sometimes a genuinely well matched carrier makes a lower number real, and that is good news for you. The other version is a figure chosen to win the booking, with the real price arriving later once the car has not moved. You can tell the two apart by asking one question: is this price held if nothing changes? We answer yes in writing.
How can I tell a realistic quote from an optimistic one?
Check it against the bands on this page. A cross-country figure well under $1,250 or a short hop priced at $250 is telling you something. Then ask what happens if no carrier accepts the job at that number, and listen carefully to the answer. An honest quote survives both questions comfortably.
What do you need from me for an accurate number?
Both full addresses rather than just the cities, the year, make and model, whether the car starts and drives, the date you would like it collected, and anything unusual about the vehicle. That is about ninety seconds of information and it is the difference between a ballpark and a price we can stand behind.
Do you ship to every state?
We cover the whole of the mainland United States, coast to coast and border to border, and the bands on this page apply across all of it. City pages and state pages fill in the local detail for many markets, and if yours does not have a page yet it makes no difference to the service you get.
What about Alaska and Hawaii?
Both are possible and both are quoted individually rather than from this table, because part of the journey goes by sea and the mainland bands simply do not describe it. Call us with the dates and the two addresses and we will put a real number together for you.
How far ahead should I book?
A week to ten days suits most lanes comfortably. Stretch that toward two weeks in the busy summer months, around the January move to the south, and for anywhere rural. If you need something sooner than that we can often still help, and expedited service exists for exactly that situation.
When will a driver actually collect the car?
You give us the date you want and we work from a window around it: six days on a standard order and three if you choose expedited. Once a carrier is assigned you get his details, and he calls you directly before he arrives so you are not sitting waiting.
Why will nobody give me a firm delivery date?
Because the driver is carrying eight or nine other vehicles and federal rules cap how many hours he can drive in a day. Anyone naming an exact hour before the car is even loaded is guessing at it. What you get instead is a dependable range, then a call as he approaches so the two of you can fix the details.
Does expedited service make the drive itself quicker?
It makes the start quicker rather than the road. Expedited narrows your collection window from six days down to three; the journey then runs to the same federal hours rules whichever service you picked. On shorter trips the window is most of your total timeline, so buying those days back matters more than it does coast to coast.
How do I choose between open and enclosed?
Open transport is what around nine in ten vehicles travel on and what every figure on this page assumes. Choose enclosed when the car is a classic, an exotic, something low to the ground, freshly painted, or simply hard to replace. If it lives on a driveway in all weathers already, open is almost certainly the sensible answer.
How much more does enclosed transport cost?
Around 80 percent above the open price for the same trip. There are fewer enclosed trailers on the road and each one carries fewer cars, which is the whole reason for the difference. For the right vehicle it is money well spent, and we will tell you honestly when we think your car does not need it.
Can you move a car that does not start?
Yes, and it is a routine job for us. The car needs to roll, steer and brake so a winch can bring it onto the trailer, and the carrier needs the right equipment, which not every truck has. There is no flat fee for it; budget from about $200 upward on top of the normal price and tell us when you book so we match the right driver first time.
Will a pickup truck or a full-size SUV fit?
Almost always, and they travel every day of the week. Extra height, extra width, a lift kit or heavy modifications change how many other vehicles can share the trailer, so the price moves with that. Give us the details and anything non-standard and we will quote it properly rather than adjusting it later.
Can I ship more than one vehicle at once?
You can, and two cars collected from one address usually cost less each than two separate bookings. The driver is doing far less work for the second vehicle, and that belongs in your price rather than ours. Mention both when you call and we will quote them as one job.
Do you handle dealer and auction vehicles?
We do, and both have their own pages with the detail that matters for them. Auction vehicles in particular have storage deadlines and release paperwork that reward booking early, so tell us the lot and the deadline when you call and we will work backward from it.
Is there anything for military families or students?
There is, and both have a page of their own on this site. Mention it when you get in touch so it is applied from the start rather than added afterward, and if you are moving on orders or to a campus, tell us the dates you are working to and we will build the schedule around them.
Whose insurance covers the car while it is moving?
Carrier Cargo Insurance does, and it belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It runs from the moment the car is loaded until it comes off at the far end. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts the job and you are welcome to see it at any point.
Does my car get moved between trucks along the way?
No. The driver who loads your car is the driver who unloads it, with no depot stop and no second company halfway. Most damage disputes in this industry start at a handover point, so your trip simply does not contain one.
Can I leave belongings in the car?
Keep it light and low. Up to around a hundred pounds in the trunk is generally fine, though personal effects are not covered by the carrier's cargo policy and the extra weight counts against the trailer's legal limit. Nothing valuable, nothing fragile, nothing you would be upset to lose. The vehicle is the thing that is insured.
How should I get the car ready?
Wash it so the condition report is easy to read, leave about a quarter of a tank of fuel, remove the toll tag and anything loose, fold the mirrors in and photograph any marks it already carries. Have a spare key available. The driver inspects the car with you at both ends, and a clean car turns that into a two minute job.
Will I get sales calls after asking for a quote?
You will not get outbound sales calls from us, and we do not sell your details to anybody else. We will contact you about your own order, which means the carrier's timing, the collection and the delivery, because that is the part you need. If you would rather have all of it by email, just say so.
What makes one auto transport lane busier than another
If your quote is higher or lower than you expected, this is almost always the reason. It is worth two minutes of your time.
Traffic already going your way
Carriers follow the freight. The interstate corridors that connect the big metro areas carry vehicles in volume every week of the year, and a trailer heading along one of those fills quickly. That availability is what keeps the price sensible and the wait short.
How easy both addresses are to reach
A seventy-five foot rig needs room to turn and somewhere legal to stop. A driveway near a highway ramp is straightforward. A narrow city street with parking on both sides is not, and a wider road nearby solves it at no charge to you.
The time of year you are moving
Summer is the busy season nationally, and January sends a lot of vehicles toward the south. Book a little further ahead in those stretches. The quieter months are often the best value of the year if your timing is open.
None of this means a quiet route is a problem. We move cars to small towns and rural addresses every week and they arrive. It means that a few days of flexibility on the collection date is the cheapest thing you can offer, and that asking us early gets you a straight answer about your particular route rather than a guess.
Open, enclosed or expedited vehicle shipping nationwide
Three ways to move the same car. Most people need the first one, and we will say so.
Open car transport
Around nine in ten vehicles travel this way and every figure on this page assumes it. Nine or ten cars share an uncovered two-level trailer, the same equipment that delivers new inventory to dealerships. It is also the quickest to book, because open trailers are most of what is on the road. Standard door to door shipping.
Enclosed auto transport
About 80 percent above open, and the right call for a classic, an exotic, something low to the ground or paintwork you would hate to see marked. Fewer trailers, fewer cars on each one, which is the entire reason for the difference. Enclosed door to door transport.
Expedited vehicle shipping
Narrows the collection window from six days to three. The drive itself runs to the same federal hours rules either way. On shorter trips that window is most of your timeline, so expedited does more there than it does on a long haul. Expedited door to door transport.
Nationwide auto transport timings, from booking to keys
Two stages on two different clocks. Telling them apart is most of understanding your dates.
Stage one, your collection window
Six days from the date you name on a standard order, three on expedited. Once a carrier is assigned you get the driver's details, and he calls you before he arrives rather than leaving you waiting on a doorstep.
Stage two, the nationwide auto transport road
One to three days under 500 miles, two to five out to 1,500, four to eight beyond that, and seven to ten coast to coast. Federal limits on a driver's hours and the eight or nine other cars he is delivering set that floor between them.
The car shipping handover at each end
A call comes as the driver nears the delivery address and the two of you agree where and when. Whoever hands over or receives the keys should be named on the booking with a cell number, whether that is you or someone standing in.
A week to ten days of notice sits comfortably on most routes. Stretch it toward two weeks through the summer, around the January run to the south, and for rural addresses at either end. If your timing is tighter than that, say so when you call, because expedited exists for exactly this and there is usually a way to make it work.
Who we move vehicles for across the country
Most nationwide bookings fall into a handful of situations, and several of them have a page of their own.
Relocations and family vehicle shipping
The most common reason a car crosses the country. A second vehicle with nobody to drive it, or two cars and one driver, is the classic case where shipping simply costs less than the flights and the fuel would.
Bought online, collected by us
You found the car three states away and were never going to fly out for it. Online car buyer shipping and auction transport both cover the paperwork and deadlines that come with it.
Orders, campuses and the seasonal run south
Military moves, student shipping and seasonal transport each have their own timing pressures. Mention which one applies when you call so it is built into your schedule from the start.
Your car is collected from one address and delivered to another, wherever in the mainland United States those two addresses are. The national line on 888-709-9078 is answered by people who can see your order in front of them. Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609.
How your vehicle is insured on a nationwide order
Covered the whole way. The part that usually goes unexplained is whose policy does it, so here it is plainly.
The policy behind your car shipping order
Carrier Cargo Insurance does the work, and it belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It is live from the moment the car is loaded until it rolls off at the far end, across every mile between. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts, and it is yours to see whenever you ask for it.
One driver from collection to delivery
The driver who loads your car is the one who unloads it. No yard stop in the middle of the country, no second company taking over halfway. Nearly every damage argument in this business can be traced back to a handover, and your trip does not contain one.
All of it is checkable in about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup: enter a USDOT number and it returns that carrier's operating authority and the insurance filed against it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
