New York to California Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
Shipping a car from New York to California costs $1,850 to $2,050 on an open trailer if the car is going to Southern California, and $2,150 to $2,400 if it is going to the Bay Area or Sacramento. Both figures come from loads that actually moved on this corridor. And that split is the useful part. On a run this long, the town your car is going to moves the price by hundreds of dollars. The town it leaves barely moves it at all.
What New York to California car shipping costs
Operable mid-size vehicle, open trailer, taken from real loads on this corridor reviewed September 2026.
| Where in California | Cities covered | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southern California MEASURED | Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Riverside, San Bernardino, Palm Springs, San Diego, Chula Vista | 2,600 to 2,850 miles | 7 to 10 days | $1,850 to $2,050 |
| Northern California MEASURED | San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Napa, Berkeley, Palo Alto | 2,870 to 3,000 miles | 8 to 11 days | $2,150 to $2,400 |
| The Central Valley QUOTED LIVE | Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Visalia, Merced | 2,750 to 2,900 miles | 7 to 10 days | Ask us |
Why one of those rows says "ask us" rather than showing a number. The valley sits between the two markets above. We have not reviewed enough recent loads into Fresno, Bakersfield or Stockton to print a figure we would want to be held to. We could split the difference and publish something plausible. We would rather price your actual address the same day you ask. That is the same call we made on the Gulf Coast side of our New Jersey to Florida page, and for the same reason.
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest cost in moving a car and fuel prices move, so we review these ranges as the market changes. The days shown are road days; your collection window comes first. Enclosed transport runs about 80 percent more than open. Oversized, modified and non-running vehicles are each priced on their own terms. See how our national bands work.
The address it is going to sets this price. The address it leaves barely does.
Most people booking this route assume the meter starts at their front door. Pick up in Manhattan and you pay one thing; pick up four hours upstate and you pay another. On a short run that instinct is correct, and we say so on our shorter New York pages. Across 2,800 miles it is almost exactly backwards.
Here is what our September 2026 review of this corridor actually showed. Two cars collected 222 miles apart, one on Long Island and one in Rochester, went out to Los Angeles at the same price. Meanwhile a car going to Sonoma County, only 67 miles further west than the Los Angeles loads, cost several hundred dollars more.
The practical use of this is simple. If your delivery address in California is flexible at all, get both options priced before you commit. That choice is worth more than anything you can do at the New York end. And if you are shipping from upstate and have been told to expect a surcharge for it, ask us to price your own address. On this route you will usually find there is not one.
New York to California Car Shipping Questions
What people moving a car from New York out to California actually ask, answered for this route rather than with national averages.
How much does it cost to ship a car from New York to California?
Into Southern California, meaning Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire and San Diego, an operable mid-size vehicle on an open trailer runs $1,850 to $2,050. Into Northern California, meaning the Bay Area and Sacramento, it runs $2,150 to $2,400. Both figures come from loads that actually moved on this corridor, reviewed in September 2026.
Why are there two prices for one state?
Because California behaves like two separate delivery markets and the freight going in and out of each is different. Los Angeles is the busiest inbound market on the West Coast, so a truck that drops there has something waiting to pick up. The Bay Area and the counties north of it are quieter, so the driver covers more ground before the next load. That difference shows up in the price, and it is bigger than the difference in distance.
Does it matter where in New York the car is picked up?
Far less than most people expect on a run this long. In our September 2026 review, two pickups 222 miles apart went out to Los Angeles at the same price. One was on Long Island, the other in Rochester. Over 2,800 miles the delivery market does the work. On short runs out of New York the pickup point matters a great deal. That is why our shorter lane pages say the opposite.
So upstate New York is not charged a premium to California?
Not on this route, no. Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and the Hudson Valley all sit on or near I-90. That is the road a westbound carrier is taking anyway. A car from any of them is easy to collect on the way. Ask for your own address to be priced and you will usually find it lands in the same band as a New York City pickup.
How long does it take to ship a car from New York to California?
Seven to ten days on the road into Southern California. Eight to eleven into Northern California. Both are counted from the moment the car goes on the trailer. Your collection window comes before that and is separate: six days as standard, or three if you choose expedited.
How many miles is it from New York to California?
Between about 2,600 and 3,000 depending on both ends. Rochester to Los Angeles is around 2,615 miles. New York City to San Diego is around 2,762. Long Island to Los Angeles is around 2,837. The Hudson Valley up to Sonoma County is around 2,904.
Is this one of the longest routes you run?
It is among them. Only a handful of domestic lanes are longer, and the ones that are tend to be corner to corner, like Washington State down to Florida. A coast to coast run is a week and a half of a driver's life. That is why it is priced and scheduled differently from a two-day hop.
Can I get a car picked up in Manhattan?
Yes, and we do it constantly. On the narrower blocks the handover happens at a practical spot a short walk from the door. You agree it when you book, and it carries no extra charge. A wider street, a supermarket lot or a stretch of avenue with room for a 75-foot rig all work.
What if my car is in a parking garage?
Bring it up to street level on the day. A car carrier cannot enter a parking structure and the height clearance in nearly all of them is well below what the truck needs. It takes five minutes and it is the detail New York customers most often have not planned for.
Do you deliver to San Francisco itself?
Yes. The city's hills, one-way streets and cable car lines make a full-size trailer awkward in places. The driver will often suggest a flatter, wider spot a few minutes from your address. Daly City, the approaches to the Bay Bridge and the wider streets in the southern half of the city are all easy.
Which California cities do you deliver to?
All of them. Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach, Oakland, Bakersfield, Anaheim, Riverside, Santa Ana, Irvine, Chula Vista, Stockton, Modesto, Santa Rosa and everywhere between. The table on this page groups them by the two pricing markets rather than listing every town.
What about the Central Valley? Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton?
We quote those live rather than publishing a figure here. The valley sits between the two markets on this page. We have not measured enough recent loads into it to print a number we would stand behind. Send us the address and we will price it properly the same day.
Is a Los Angeles delivery cheaper than a San Francisco one?
Yes, by a few hundred dollars, even though San Francisco is only about a hundred miles further. That gap is the single most useful thing to know before you book this route. If you have any say in the delivery address, a Southern California drop is the better-priced option.
Does San Diego cost more than Los Angeles?
No. San Diego prices in the same band as Los Angeles and is sometimes a touch below it, despite being further south. Southern California functions as one busy delivery market from the Ventura county line down to the border.
Is open transport safe for a trip this long?
Yes, and it is what the overwhelming majority of cars on this route travel on. Your vehicle rides on an uncovered two-level rig alongside eight or nine others, which is exactly how dealerships take delivery of new stock. Open trailers also fill fastest, so they usually get collected sooner.
Should I pay for enclosed transport to California?
It is a fairer question on this route than on most, because the car is outdoors for a week and a half. Enclosed runs about 80 percent more than open. For a classic, a show car, fresh paintwork or anything where a stone chip is a real expense, it is worth weighing seriously. For a daily driver, open is the sensible choice.
Does expedited service make the trip faster?
It shortens the wait for collection from six days to three, which is the part you can actually influence. The drive itself does not shorten, because federal rules cap how many hours a driver can be behind the wheel no matter what anyone paid. Across 2,800 miles that makes expedited a smaller win than it is on a short lane. We would rather you knew that before spending on it.
How do I get the best price on this route?
Give us a wider collection window and, if you have the choice, a delivery address in Southern California. A flexible window lets your car fill the last space on a trailer already heading west. That is where the best prices come from. Booking two or three weeks ahead helps for the same reason.
Is there a busy season for New York to California?
Late spring through early fall is the heaviest stretch in both directions, with college moves in August and September adding to it. January and February are the quietest and often the easiest to schedule. The route runs year round and the northern interstates are cleared quickly, so winter is a scheduling question rather than an obstacle.
Who insures my car between New York and California?
Carrier Cargo Insurance covers it, and that policy belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It is live from the moment the car is loaded in New York until it comes off in California. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts and it is yours to see whenever you ask.
Can I check the carrier myself?
Yes, and it takes about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup: enter a USDOT number and it returns that carrier's operating authority and the insurance filed against it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
Will the same driver take my car the whole way?
Yes. The person who loads your car in New York is the person who releases it in California. There is no transfer to a second operator halfway and no stopover in a yard. That removes the step where most of this industry's damage claims start.
Can I put belongings in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it to around a hundred pounds, in the trunk or below the window line, and out of the passenger seats. Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the vehicle rather than its contents, so anything valuable or irreplaceable is better sent separately or carried with you.
Can you ship a car that does not run?
Yes. A non-running vehicle needs a trailer with a winch and a driver set up for it. Budget $200 upward on top of the figures on this page. Tell us at the quote stage whether it rolls, steers and brakes, because those three things decide which equipment is needed.
What about an SUV, a pickup or a van?
All fine. A larger vehicle takes up more of the trailer and weighs more, so it prices above a mid-size sedan on the same route. Give us the year, make and model and we will price the actual vehicle rather than a category.
Can you ship two cars at once?
Yes, and it is common on this route, particularly for households relocating. Two vehicles on the same trailer to the same address is more efficient for the driver, and the second car usually prices below the first. Ask for both together rather than as two separate orders.
Do you charge more for door to door delivery?
No. Door to door is how we run every order on this route, and the price on this page is the door to door price. If the street cannot take a 75-foot rig safely, the driver arranges a spot nearby, and that is still included.
What happens on delivery day?
You get a call once the driver is closing on California and the two of you agree the spot and the hour between you. Put whoever will actually be there on the order with a cell number. On a coast to coast move that is often someone who flew out ahead of the car. Naming them at booking saves a scramble at the end.
Can I ship an electric vehicle from New York to California?
Yes, and this is one of the routes where we see the most of them. Charge it to around half, tell us the model so the weight is priced correctly, and turn off anything that wakes the car while it sits. Heavier EVs price a little above a comparable gas car because of what they add to the trailer's total.
Is the quoted price the price I actually pay?
Yes. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. That is the Smart Price Promise, and it is why we would rather measure this route properly than publish an attractive number we cannot deliver on.
Shipping the car or driving it across the country
At 2,800 miles this is a real question, not a formality. It deserves a straight answer rather than a sales one.
What the drive actually costs you
Five to six days at the wheel. Four or five nights in motels. Fuel across a dozen states, and meals on top of that. Then the wear on the car you are moving, and the flight home for anyone who is not staying. Add it up honestly and the gap between driving and shipping is usually smaller than people assume it will be.
Where shipping clearly wins
A second vehicle nobody needs to be sitting in. Two cars and one driver. A job that starts on a fixed Monday. A car bought online and never collected. Anyone who would have to fly back east afterward. In all of those the trailer is not just easier, it is cheaper by the time the flights are counted.
Where the drive genuinely wins
If crossing the country is something you want to do rather than a problem you need solved, go and do it. I-80 through Wyoming and Utah, or the southern run through the desert, are among the great American drives. Ask us for the comparison and we will give you an honest one either way.
Collection across New York State and delivery across California
Two of the largest states in the country at either end of the same order. Here is what actually changes depending on where you are in each.
New York City and the five boroughs
Familiar ground. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island are all routine for us. On tight blocks the handover moves to a practical spot a short walk away, fixed when you book and carrying no surcharge. Garaged cars need bringing up to street level on the day, because no car carrier can go into a parking structure.
Long Island, Westchester and the Hudson Valley
Generally the easiest collections in the state. Driveways, wider roads and room for a full-size rig to stop safely. These are also the origins we see most often on this route, so a westbound trailer passing through is rarely more than a few days away.
Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany
All sit on or beside I-90, which is the road a westbound carrier is already taking. That is why upstate collections price alongside downstate ones on this route rather than above them. Ask us to confirm it on your own address.
Greater Los Angeles and Orange County
The busiest delivery market on the West Coast and the best-priced part of California to ship into. We keep an office in Los Angeles. The far end of this route is somewhere we have people, not somewhere we send cars and hope. It is an operations base rather than a depot, so your car still goes to your address.
San Diego and the Inland Empire
Priced in the same band as Los Angeles despite the extra miles south, and straightforward to deliver into. Riverside, San Bernardino and the desert communities around Palm Springs are all standard work on a westbound trailer that is already unloading in the region.
The Bay Area and north of it
San Francisco's hills and one-way streets make a full-size trailer awkward in places. The driver will often propose a flatter spot minutes from your door. Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and the wine country are all easy by comparison. All of them sit in the higher of the two price bands on this page.
How long New York to California auto transport takes
Two separate clocks, and mixing them up is the most common reason people think a shipment is late when it is not.
Stage one, waiting for the trailer
A six day spread around the date you choose, or three days if you pay for expedited. Trailers leave loaded rather than half empty. Building a full one bound for the West Coast takes longer than building one going two states over. This is the part a flexible date genuinely shortens.
Stage two, the run west
Seven to ten days into Southern California, eight to eleven into the north, counted from the moment your car is secured. Federal rules cap the hours a driver can spend at the wheel, and he has other vehicles to drop along the way. Between them, those two things set the pace, not the horsepower of the truck.
The California handover
A call comes once the driver is closing on the state. The two of you settle the spot and the hour between you. Add whoever will physically be there to the order with a cell number. On this route that is frequently someone who flew out a week before the car did.
Open, enclosed or expedited on the run to California
Three choices, and on a route this long two of them are worth more thought than usual.
Open New York to California car shipping
The basis of every price on this page and the choice for the great majority of cars crossing the country. Your vehicle rides alongside eight or nine others on an uncovered two-level rig, which is how new stock reaches showrooms. Open trailers also fill fastest, so they tend to collect sooner.
Enclosed New York to California auto transport
Around 80 percent above open, and the length of this trip makes it a fairer question than it is on a short lane. The car is outdoors for a week and a half, some of it through the mountain states. For a classic, a show car or fresh paintwork, that is worth weighing properly rather than dismissing.
Expedited New York to California vehicle shipping
Narrows the collection window from six days to three. It does not shorten the drive, because the hours a driver may work are capped no matter what anyone paid. Across 2,800 miles that makes expedited a thinner benefit than on a short run, and we would rather say so than sell it to you.
How your car is insured between New York and California
Your vehicle is covered for every mile of the crossing. The question the industry tends to answer vaguely is whose policy is actually doing the covering, so here is the direct answer.
The policy behind your New York to California order
Carrier Cargo Insurance does the work, and it belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It runs from the moment the car is loaded in New York until it comes off the trailer in California, across every state between. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts, and it is yours to see whenever you ask for it.
One driver, coast to coast
The person who secures your car at the New York end is the person who releases it in California. No transfer to another operator halfway across, no layover in a yard in the middle of the country. That single detail removes the step where most of this industry's damage claims begin. On a crossing this long it matters more than on any short hop.
All of it is checkable in about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup: enter a USDOT number and it returns that carrier's operating authority and the insurance filed against it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
