Smart Auto Transport

The cost to ship a car with Smart Auto Transport is typically $450 to $900 on a run under 500 miles and up to $1,600 to $2,500 coast to coast, on an open trailer, and takes between one to ten days in transit time. Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company, and this page explains how we price, book and move your car.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Smart Auto Transport car shipping cost?
Figures below are for a running mid-size vehicle on an open trailer, checked September 2026. Distance sets the band, and your quote lands inside it.
| Trip length | Example moves | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 500 miles NATIONAL BAND | Chicago to St. Louis, Atlanta to Orlando, Seattle to Boise | 1 to 3 days | $450 to $900 |
| 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | Chicago to Tampa, Dallas to Denver, Seattle to Los Angeles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
| 1,500 to 2,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | Chicago to Los Angeles, New York to Dallas, Seattle to Tampa | 4 to 8 days | $1,250 to $2,100 |
| Over 2,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | New York to Los Angeles, San Francisco to Miami | 7 to 10 days | $1,600 to $2,500 |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Fuel is the biggest piece of what it costs to haul a car, and diesel prices move, so we review these bands with the market. The day count starts when your pickup window ends. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. See how our national bands work.
Vehicle size, trailer type, the season and how flexible your dates are all move the number inside the band. Our nationwide car shipping page shows how busy lanes and quiet ones differ.
What is the Smart Price Promise?
It is the reason this service carries the name. The price we quote is the price you pay. As long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same, that number holds from booking through delivery.
The same vehicle, the same two addresses, the car in the condition you described, and the trailer type you chose.
A different car, a new address, a vehicle that turns out not to run, or a switch to enclosed. Tell us early and we re-quote before a truck is assigned.
That is also why we take a deposit. It lets us commit a carrier to your dates at the quoted price. A company asking for nothing up front is often unsure it can book the move at the number it gave you, and that is where the later call about a higher rate comes from. Read the full promise.
Smart Auto Transport Questions
The questions customers ask us most, answered with our own figures and policies.
What is Smart Auto Transport?
It is the car shipping service run by Smart Auto Move Inc, a car shipping company working across the lower 48 states. We operate under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368, from four staffed offices, with a vetted network of over 16,000 carriers.
How much does it cost to ship a car?
The cost to ship a car is typically $450 to $900 on a run under 500 miles and up to $1,600 to $2,500 coast to coast, on an open trailer, and takes between one to ten days in transit time. Your exact figure depends on the two addresses, the vehicle and your dates.
What is the Smart Price Promise?
The price we quote is the price you pay. As long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same, the number does not move after you book.
What would change my price after booking?
Only a change to the shipment itself. A different vehicle, a new pickup or delivery address, a car that turns out not to run, or a switch from open to enclosed. Tell us early and we will re-quote it before the truck is assigned.
Why do you ask for a deposit?
It lets us commit a carrier to your dates at the price we quoted. Firms that ask for nothing up front are often not sure they can book the move at the number they gave you, which is where the call about a higher rate comes from.
How long will my car be on the road?
One to three days under 500 miles, two to five days out to 1,500, four to eight days out to 2,500, and seven to ten days coast to coast. Your pickup window comes first, six days on Standard or three on Expedited.
How does the pickup window work?
It starts on the first date you give us and runs six days on Standard, three on Expedited. The driver calls ahead to set the day and time with you inside that window.
Which states do you cover?
All 48 states in the continental U.S. We move cars between every major metro and plenty of small towns, farms and campuses in between.
Where are your offices?
Four staffed offices: Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida. We also serve McKinney and Houston in Texas, Iselin in New Jersey, Huntington Station and the Bronx in New York, and Portsmouth in Virginia.
Do I bring my car to one of your offices?
No need. Pickup and delivery happen at your own address, or at a nearby lot when a street is too tight for a 75-foot hauler. The offices are where our people work, not yards.
Open or enclosed: which should I pick?
Open carries most cars and costs the least. Plan on about 80 percent more for enclosed, so a $1,000 open move is roughly $1,800 enclosed. Enclosed is the right call for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint or a car too low for a ramp.
What does expedited service change?
It narrows the pickup window from six days to three, so your car gets moving sooner. Road time stays the same, because federal driving-hour rules apply to every truck.
Is my car insured while it travels?
Yes. Carrier Cargo Insurance, held by the carrier, covers the car from pickup to delivery. We can send you the carrier's certificate as soon as your truck is assigned.
How do you choose the carrier?
Every carrier in our network holds active FMCSA operating authority with insurance on file. We also weigh equipment, route experience, communication and service history before your car is assigned.
Can I leave personal items in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.
What should I do before the truck arrives?
Wash it, photograph each side and the odometer, and leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Take off roof boxes, bike racks and toll passes. Mention an alarm, a lift kit or low clearance when you book.
Is door to door really door to door?
Yes, wherever a car hauler can stop legally and safely. Where a street is narrow, steep or gated, the driver meets you minutes away at a wide lot. It costs nothing extra.
How do I pay?
A deposit at booking, then the balance to the driver at delivery, usually by cashier's check, money order or cash. You can also put the full amount on a credit card at the time of booking.
What happens if my plans change?
Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. Once we assign one and send you the driver's details, that money is spoken for. It is not gone, though. You can push the move back and use it on a later shipment.
How do I know a car shipping company is legitimate?
Start with the USDOT number. Ours is 2887232, and anyone can look it up on the FMCSA SAFER site for free. Check the BBB record too: ours is A+ and accredited since 2016. Read reviews on more than one site before you book.
What is the biggest warning sign in a quote?
A number far below every other one. If four companies say $1,000 to $1,200 and a fifth says $500, ask that company whether the rate is confirmed. If they say yes, read their reviews for the words bait and switch.
Will you call or text me after I ask for a price?
We do not make sales calls. Your quote comes to you and the next step is yours. When you want to talk it through, call us on 888-709-9078 and we are glad to take it.
Can I track my vehicle?
Yes, in three ways: the driver's phone number for calls and texts, email updates from us, and GPS tracking when the carrier's truck supports it.
Will you take a car that will not start?
Yes, on a truck with a winch. Plan on $200 or more above the running price, and tell us at quote time so the right equipment is assigned.
Do you ship trucks, SUVs and motorcycles?
Yes. Pickups, three-row SUVs, vans and motorcycles all move regularly. Bigger vehicles take more room on the trailer, so they cost more than a sedan on the same route.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to three weeks suits most moves. In summer and in the fall snowbird rush, give it three to four weeks. Expedited helps when your dates are already set.
Can someone else hand over or collect the car?
Yes. Name them when you book and share their phone number. They can sign the condition report at either end, which helps when you are flying ahead of the car.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico?
Not at this time. Our carriers run the lower 48, and we cover every state in the continental U.S.

How your car is insured with Smart Auto Move
Your car travels with one carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000. Each holds active FMCSA operating authority with insurance on file, and we weigh equipment, route experience and service history before assigning your shipment.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the car from pickup to delivery, and we can pass you the certificate as soon as the truck is assigned. The condition report signed at both ends is the record it rests on, so take a few photos of your own too. Our auto transport insurance guide goes deeper.
How to tell a car shipping company is legitimate
Three checks take about five minutes. Look up the USDOT number on the FMCSA SAFER site, which is a free public lookup. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368. Read the BBB record, where ours is A+ and accredited since 2016. Then read reviews on more than one site.
The clearest warning sign is a quote far below every other one. Ask that company whether the rate is confirmed, and look through their reviews for the words bait and switch. A fair price that holds is worth more than a low number that moves.
