Spokane, Washington Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
Spokane car shipping is typically $525 to $1,750 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 6 days in transit time. On this lane the destination market moves your price more than the mileage does, and our own table proves it: Chicago is 355 miles further than Phoenix and costs less.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Spokane car shipping cost?
Every row below is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, reviewed September 2026. The ranges hold in both directions, so a car coming into Spokane prices the same as a car leaving it.
| Route | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spokane to Seattle or Tacoma BEST VALUE | About 280 miles | 1 to 2 days | $525 to $725 |
| Spokane to Boise | About 285 miles | 1 to 2 days | $550 to $750 |
| Spokane to Portland | About 350 miles | 1 to 2 days | $575 to $775 |
| Spokane to Salt Lake City | About 735 miles | 2 to 3 days | $850 to $1,075 |
| Spokane to Reno, Sparks or Carson City MEASURED | 790 to 820 miles | 2 to 3 days | $900 to $1,150 |
| Spokane to San Francisco or the Bay Area | About 940 miles | 3 to 4 days | $975 to $1,200 |
| Spokane to Las Vegas | About 1,000 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,025 to $1,250 |
| Spokane to Denver | About 1,175 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,075 to $1,300 |
| Spokane to Los Angeles | About 1,215 miles | 3 to 4 days | $1,075 to $1,300 |
| Spokane to San Diego | About 1,290 miles | 4 to 5 days | $1,125 to $1,350 |
| Spokane to Phoenix THINNEST CORRIDOR | About 1,425 miles | 4 to 5 days | $1,300 to $1,550 |
| Spokane to Chicago MEASURED | About 1,780 miles | 5 to 6 days | $1,100 to $1,300 |
| Spokane to Dallas or Fort Worth MEASURED, LONGEST | About 1,850 miles | 5 to 6 days | $1,500 to $1,750 |
| Any route under 500 miles NATIONAL BAND | Under 500 miles | 1 to 2 days | $450 to $900 |
| Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the single largest cost in hauling a car and it tracks the market, so the rows get reviewed against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Three rows are measured rather than estimated. Reno comes from our Spokane to Reno page, Chicago from our Chicago to Seattle page, and Dallas from our Texas to Washington page.
Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Cheney, Airway Heights, Deer Park, Mead and Medical Lake all price with the Spokane rows, and so do Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden just over the Idaho line. Sandpoint, Moscow, Pullman and Colville sit further out and can add a little.
Chicago is further than Phoenix and costs less
Look down the table and one pair of rows refuses to behave. Chicago is 1,780 miles from Spokane and runs $1,100 to $1,300. Phoenix is 1,425 miles away, a full 355 miles closer, and runs $1,300 to $1,550. Both of those are figures we stand behind, and the gap is not a mistake.
What sets a car hauling price is not the odometer. It is how easily the driver who brings your car in can find the next car to take out. Chicago is one of the densest freight destinations in the country: six of the seven Class I railroads meet there and the interstate network converges on it, so a driver dropping a car in Chicago has a full board of onward loads to choose from.
Phoenix from Spokane is a different proposition. It is a long diagonal across the Great Basin with far less traffic in either direction, and a driver arriving there has a much shorter list of ways to fill the trailer for the trip back. That risk is priced into your quote, and 355 fewer miles does not offset it.
The same logic explains Reno. At 790 miles it runs $900 to $1,150, only about $200 below Chicago at more than twice the distance. Northern Nevada is a thin market and the price says so. Once you see the mechanism, the whole table reads logically rather than randomly.
Spokane Car Shipping Questions
The questions this city really generates, answered with its own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Spokane?
Spokane car shipping is typically $525 to $1,750 on an open trailer for an operable mid-size vehicle, and the destination market decides where you land more than the mileage does. Seattle is $525 to $725. Reno is $900 to $1,150. Los Angeles is $1,075 to $1,300. Chicago is $1,100 to $1,300. Dallas, the highest we publish from here, is $1,500 to $1,750.
How long does Spokane auto transport take?
One day to six, by distance. Seattle, Boise and Portland are 1 to 2 days. Salt Lake City and Reno are 2 to 3. The Bay Area, Las Vegas, Denver and Los Angeles are 3 to 4. San Diego and Phoenix are 4 to 5. Chicago and Dallas are 5 to 6. Those counts start at pickup, so add your pickup window for the full timeline.
Why does Chicago cost less than Phoenix from Spokane?
Because price follows the market, not the map. Chicago is 1,780 miles away and runs $1,100 to $1,300. Phoenix is 1,425 miles away and runs $1,300 to $1,550. Chicago is one of the densest freight destinations in the country, so a driver dropping there has a full board of onward loads. Phoenix from Spokane is a thin diagonal with far less waiting at the other end, and that risk is priced in.
So mileage does not decide my price?
It is the first input but not the last one. Reno at 790 miles runs $900 to $1,150, and Chicago at more than twice the distance runs only $200 more. What really sets the number is how easily the driver who brings your car in can find the next car to take out. Dense destinations reward you; thin ones do not.
Which is the cheapest route out of Spokane?
Seattle or Tacoma at $525 to $725 over about 280 miles. It is a short in-state hop on Interstate 90 with heavy truck traffic in both directions, which is the best combination you can ask for. Boise and Portland are close behind.
Which is the most expensive?
Dallas or Fort Worth at $1,500 to $1,750 over about 1,850 miles. It is the longest run we publish from Spokane and it crosses the Rockies on a route with thinner traffic than the east-west corridors. Phoenix is the steepest for its distance, at $1,300 to $1,550 over 1,425 miles.
Do you have an office in Spokane?
Not in Spokane, and we would rather say so than list an address we do not have. Our Washington office is in Lakewood, at 5607 Boston Ave SW, Lakewood, WA 98499, on 253-200-5645. It is one of our four staffed offices and it covers the whole state, Spokane included.
Lakewood is 280 miles away. Does that matter?
Less than it sounds, and here is why. The work that decides how your move goes is dispatch, and that is done by people rather than by proximity. Having a staffed Washington office means the people arranging your collection know the state, the I-90 corridor and the pass conditions. What it does not mean is that anyone drives out from Lakewood, because your car is collected by the assigned carrier at your own address.
Which towns around Spokane do you collect from?
All of the Inland Northwest. Spokane, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Cheney, Airway Heights, Deer Park, Mead, Medical Lake and Nine Mile Falls, plus Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden just over the Idaho line, and Pullman, Moscow, Colville and Sandpoint further out.
Will the truck come to my door in Spokane?
In most of the area, yes. Spokane is a mid-size city with wide arterials and plenty of room. Division Street, Sprague Avenue, Trent Avenue, the Sullivan Road corridor in Spokane Valley and the I-90 frontage roads all give a full-size carrier space to load and pull away. Most suburban streets take a truck at the curb.
Where might the truck need a meeting point?
Two places. The South Hill has steep grades and narrow older streets with mature trees, which a loaded 75-foot trailer cannot always clear. And Browne's Addition and parts of the West Central and Perry districts have tight blocks with parking on both sides. There the driver picks a wider street or a retail lot nearby and meets you, which costs nothing and takes a few minutes.
Do you serve Fairchild Air Force Base?
Regularly. Fairchild sits about 12 miles west of downtown Spokane and it generates steady vehicle moves in both directions. A carrier cannot drive onto the base without credentials, so the handover happens at an agreed spot just outside the gate. Tell us it is a base move when you book and we set that up in advance.
Can you book on military orders before the dates are firm?
Yes. Give us your best window and we adjust once orders settle, rather than making you wait on paperwork before you can plan. Our military car shipping page sets out what to have ready.
Do you ship cars for students in the area?
Every August and every May. Gonzaga and Whitworth are in Spokane, Eastern Washington University is in Cheney, and Washington State University in Pullman and the University of Idaho in Moscow are about 75 miles south. Deliveries near a campus work best at a wider street or a retail lot a short walk from the dorms.
Does winter affect shipping out of Spokane?
It can, and the good news is the direction that matters most is the easy one. Spokane sits on the near side of the Cascades, so a westbound run to Seattle only meets Snoqualmie Pass at the very end. Eastbound on I-90 crosses Lookout Pass into Idaho and Montana, and southbound to Reno or Salt Lake City climbs several times. Drivers wait out a storm rather than take a loaded trailer over a pass in one.
Which months are easiest?
May through September, comfortably. The passes are clear and the estimates hold without qualification. January and February are the two months where a closure is most likely to add a day. If your dates are flexible, the shoulder months either side of summer give you the best combination of price and certainty.
How soon can you collect my car?
Our standard pickup window is 6 days from booking. Expedited narrows it to 3 days, which is 72 hours. Spokane sits on Interstate 90, one of the busiest freight corridors in the country, so collection here often happens toward the front of the window rather than at the end of it.
Is expedited worth it from Spokane?
It depends on the distance and we will tell you which side you are on. Expedited cuts the pickup window from six days to three. It does not speed up the drive, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. On a short run to Seattle or Boise the window is most of your timeline, so it buys you real dates. To Dallas it is a thinner benefit.
What is open transport?
The familiar two-level trailer carrying nine or ten cars, and every price on this page is an open price. It moves the large majority of cars through Spokane and it is the same equipment dealers receive new inventory on. Your car picks up road dust and arrives wanting a wash, which is the whole of the downside.
How much more is enclosed transport?
Enclosed runs about 80% more than open. Against $1,100 to $1,300 for Chicago, expect somewhere around $1,975 to $2,350. The car rides inside a closed trailer with no weather and no grit. On a winter move out of eastern Washington that also means no road salt or magnesium chloride on the underside.
Is enclosed worth it for a winter move?
It is a fairer question here than on many routes. The I-90 passes get treated heavily in winter, so a January open shipment will arrive with spray on the underside. If the car is valuable or freshly restored, enclosed earns its money in winter in a way it might not in July. For a daily driver, a wash at the far end covers it.
Can you move a car that will not start?
Yes. It needs a trailer with a winch and a driver equipped to use it, and we have plenty of both. Budget $200 upward on top of the running price. Three answers decide which rig we send, so have them ready: does it roll, does it steer, does it brake.
What does an SUV or pickup add?
A mid-size SUV usually adds $75 to $150 over the ranges here. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV such as a Suburban or an F-250 typically adds $150 to $300. Trailers are limited by height and weight, so a bigger vehicle takes room the driver could otherwise sell.
Can I ship a lifted truck?
Yes, and it is worth mentioning at quote time because this is lifted-truck country. A lifted truck may not fit the upper deck and sometimes needs a particular trailer. It is never a problem when we know in advance, and it can become one if we find out on the morning.
Is my car insured during the move?
Your vehicle moves under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, live from loading to unloading with nothing uncovered between. We confirm each carrier's coverage is active before dispatch and we will email you the certificate for your specific carrier whenever you ask.
What is your USDOT and MC number?
Smart Auto Move operates under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Both are public on the FMCSA SAFER system, and we would rather you checked them than took our word for it. Looking those numbers up is the quickest way to tell a real transport company from a website.
Does my car need an emissions test in Washington?
No. Washington's emission check program ended on January 1, 2020 after 38 years, and owners are no longer required to have emissions tested before renewing a registration. That applies statewide, Spokane County included.
How long do I have to register the car in Washington?
Thirty days. New residents have 30 days to get a Washington driver license and register the vehicle, according to the Washington Department of Licensing. Bring your current title to any vehicle licensing office, and check the odometer before you go in, because the state asks for the reading.
I live in Idaho but work in Spokane. Which state do I register in?
Wherever you actually reside, and it matters more here than in most places because the state line runs about 20 miles east of downtown. Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden are Idaho addresses with Spokane commutes. Give us the address the car is going to rather than the city you work in, and the quote and the paperwork both line up.
Does it cost more to deliver into Idaho?
Not meaningfully. Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden are within about 35 miles of Spokane and carriers treat the whole area as one delivery zone. Sandpoint and Moscow are further out and can add a little, and we will tell you if they do rather than leaving it as a surprise.
Does someone need to be there at both ends?
Someone does, and it need not be you. Any responsible adult will do: a partner, a relative, a neighbor, a building manager, a coworker. They hand over or receive the keys, walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report. Give us their name and a cell number at booking.
Can I leave belongings in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it to around a hundred pounds, in the trunk and below the window line so the driver can see out. Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the vehicle rather than its contents, so anything valuable or hard to replace travels better with you.
How should I prepare the car?
Wash it, because dirt hides the marks the condition report should record. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Turn the alarm off. Then photograph all four corners, the roof and the wheels in daylight. Five minutes of that makes the handover at the far end simple.
What is the condition report?
It is the inspection you and the driver both sign at pickup, recording every existing mark on the car, and sign again at delivery. Keep your copy. Compare the car against it in good light before you sign it off, and take your own photographs again while you are there.
What if something is wrong at delivery?
Note it on the condition report before the driver leaves, photograph it, and call us that day. That written note at the curb is what makes a Carrier Cargo Insurance claim straightforward, and we file it with the carrier for you. It is uncommon and it resolves much faster when the paperwork happens on the spot.
Does the car change trailers along the way?
Not with us. Whoever loads it in Spokane unloads it at the far end. No second company partway, no night in a storage yard. Damage in this business clusters at exactly that transfer, so a route without one removes the opportunity rather than insuring against it.
Can I reach the driver on the road?
You get the driver's name and direct number once the carrier is assigned, which is more useful than a dot on a map. Drivers will tell you roughly where they are and give you a real delivery window about a day out. Our Lakewood team checks in as well, and you can call either.
Can I ship two cars together?
Yes, and it usually beats two separate bookings. Two vehicles from one Spokane address to one address at the far end save the driver two stops, and that efficiency shows up on the second car. Ask for both at quote time and we will price them as a pair.
How does payment work?
A deposit goes on a card once the carrier is assigned, and the balance is settled with the driver at delivery. That balance is usually cash, a cashier's check or a money order, and your driver confirms which they take when the delivery window is set.
Will the final price match the quote?
Yes. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. That is the Smart Price Promise. What changes a quote is a change in the facts, so tell us early and we re-price it before dispatch rather than after.
Where is Smart Auto Move based?
Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida. Washington is handled out of Lakewood.
How do I get a real price for my Spokane move?
Use the form at the top of this page with both ZIP codes, the year, make and model, and whether the car runs. You will have a real figure in minutes rather than a teaser rate that moves later. You can also call Lakewood on 253-200-5645 or the national line on 888-709-9078.
A staffed office in the state, 280 miles west
Our Washington office is in Lakewood, on the other side of the Cascades. We want to be precise about what that does and does not mean.
5607 Boston Ave SW, Lakewood, WA 98499
253-200-5645 · National line 888-709-9078
One of our four staffed offices, covering the whole state including Spokane. It is an office rather than a yard, so your car is collected at your own address.
What it means: the people arranging your collection work in Washington. They know the I-90 corridor, they know what Snoqualmie and Lookout Pass do in February, and they know that Coeur d'Alene is a twenty-minute drive from Spokane Valley rather than a different region. On a lane where weather and geography decide your dates, that is worth having.
What it does not mean: nobody drives out from Lakewood. Your car is collected at your own address by the assigned carrier, the same as anywhere else. We have no office in Spokane and we would rather say that plainly than list a Spokane address we do not hold. Plenty of car shipping sites put a local address on every city page, and a great many of those are a mail drop or nothing at all. Ask any company for the address on their FMCSA filing and compare it with the one on their city page.
The largest city for a long way in any direction
Spokane is about 280 miles from Seattle and roughly 1,300 from Minneapolis, and there is nothing of comparable size between the two. That shapes how this lane works in a way most city pages never mention.
Westbound is easy
Seattle and Tacoma are a short hop on I-90 with heavy traffic both ways. It is the cheapest route out of Spokane and the easiest to schedule, at $525 to $725.
Eastbound is steady
I-90 carries freight the whole way to Chicago and beyond, which is why Chicago prices as well as it does despite the distance. Montana and the Dakotas are thin, but the through traffic is not.
The diagonals are thinner
Phoenix, Dallas and the southwest mean crossing the Great Basin or the Rockies on routes with less traffic. Those are the rows that price highest, and now you know why.
There is a practical consequence worth acting on. If your car is going anywhere in the southwest and your dates have any give in them, a wider pickup window is worth more here than it would be in Seattle or Portland. On a thin corridor, being the easy car on a driver's board is what gets you a good number.
The Inland Northwest reaches well past the state line, and we treat it as one area. Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden are Idaho addresses within about 35 miles of downtown Spokane, and they price with the Spokane rows rather than as a separate region.
Collecting and delivering across the Spokane area
Spokane is a straightforward city for a car carrier, and it comes down to how it was laid out.
The arterials are wide and the grid is generous. Division Street, Sprague Avenue, Trent Avenue, Monroe, the Sullivan Road corridor in Spokane Valley and the I-90 frontage roads all give a 75-foot trailer room to stop, load and pull away. Liberty Lake, Cheney, Airway Heights, Mead and Deer Park are easy almost everywhere, and so are Coeur d'Alene and Post Falls.
The South Hill
Steep grades and narrow older streets with mature trees a loaded carrier cannot clear. The driver picks a wider street lower down, usually a couple of minutes away.
The older districts
Browne's Addition and parts of West Central and Perry have tight blocks with parking on both sides. A nearby retail lot solves it, arranged before the driver sets off.
Fairchild and campuses
Fairchild handovers happen outside the gate, since no carrier has base credentials. Gonzaga, Whitworth and Eastern Washington deliveries work best a short walk from the dorms.
None of those situations costs extra and none of them is unusual. The driver agrees the spot with you in advance, which is the whole reason we ask about access at booking rather than on the morning.
What Washington asks, and the Idaho question
Washington's arrival paperwork is short. The wrinkle in Spokane is not the state's rules but which state you are in, because the line runs about twenty miles east of downtown.
- New residents have 30 days to get a Washington driver license and register the vehicle, according to the Washington Department of Licensing.
- Bring your current title to any vehicle licensing office, and check the odometer before you go in, because the state asks you for the reading.
- There is no emissions test anywhere in Washington. The state's program ended on January 1, 2020 after 38 years, and owners are no longer required to have emissions tested before renewing a registration.
- Registration fees and any use tax owed on a vehicle new to the state are settled at the counter. Washington has no state income tax.
- If the car is going to an Idaho address, Idaho's rules apply instead. Give us the delivery address rather than the city you work in and both the quote and the paperwork line up.
That last point catches people out more often than anything else here. Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls and Hayden are Idaho addresses with Spokane commutes, and plenty of customers give us Spokane because that is where they work. It makes no real difference to the price, but it does decide which state registers your car, so the address is the thing we need.
Keep your existing coverage in force until the new policy starts. The car travels under the carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, so there is no gap on the trailer. You want none on the driveway either.
Who ships cars in and out of Spokane
Military orders
Fairchild Air Force Base sits twelve miles west of downtown and moves people in both directions all year. We can book on orders before the report date is firm.
Students
Gonzaga and Whitworth are in the city, Eastern Washington is in Cheney, and WSU in Pullman and Idaho in Moscow are about 75 miles south. August and May are the busy months.
Job and retirement moves
Spokane trades steadily with Seattle, Portland, Boise and the southwest, and a second car almost always ships rather than crossing the passes on its own wheels.
Our military car shipping page and student discount page cover the first two. If you run a route seasonally, ask about both legs at once, because the ranges are the same in either direction.
When to book, and what winter does
The passes are clear, the days are long and the estimates hold without qualification. This is the easiest stretch of the year and the day counts need no asterisk.
Still runs well. January and February are the two months where a pass closure is most likely to add a day. Two to three weeks of lead time gets you better dates.
Here is the geography that works in your favor. Spokane sits on the near side of the Cascades, so a westbound run to Seattle only meets Snoqualmie Pass at the very end of the trip rather than in the middle of it. Eastbound crosses Lookout Pass into Idaho and Montana, and southbound to Reno or Salt Lake City climbs several times. Drivers stop and wait rather than take a loaded trailer over a pass in a storm, which is exactly what you want them to do, and the ranges on this page already allow for it.

Open, enclosed or expedited from Spokane
Open transport carries almost every car here and all the prices on this page are open prices. Enclosed is the choice for a collector car, an exotic, a low car or fresh paint. Budget about 80 percent above the open figure.
Enclosed is a fairer question in eastern Washington than in many places, and here is the honest version. The I-90 passes get treated heavily through the winter, so a January open shipment will arrive with spray on the underside. If the car is valuable or freshly restored, enclosed earns its money in winter in a way it might not in July. For a daily driver, a wash at the far end covers it.
Expedited narrows the pickup window from six days to three. The drive does not shorten, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. On a short run to Seattle or Boise that window is most of your timeline, so expedited buys you real dates. To Dallas it is a thinner benefit and we will say so. The open and enclosed guide covers the trailer choice and the standard versus expedited guide covers the timing one.
A car that will not start ships perfectly well. It loads on a winch, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and telling us at quote time means the right truck is assigned from the start. Lifted trucks are common here and worth mentioning for the same reason.
The carrier moving your car
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole distance, with no transfer partway and no night in a storage yard. Active FMCSA authority and a live insurance filing come first and nothing moves without both. After that comes the trailer, how often that driver works the I-90 corridor and the passes in winter, and how their recent deliveries went.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from the Spokane pickup through to delivery, and the certificate is yours on request. Our own record is public on SAFER at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
