The unparalleled guide to Washington state to California Car Shipping
Washington State to California Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car from Washington state to California is typically $900 to $1,350 on an open trailer, and takes between 2 to 5 days in transit time. This is the I-5 corridor, one of the busiest freight lanes in the country, and it is one of the only routes where Smart Auto Move has a staffed office at both ends.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Washington to California car shipping cost?
Every row below is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, reviewed September 2026. Each one comes from a route page where we have already done the work. The ranges hold in both directions.

| Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the single largest cost in hauling a car and it tracks the market, so the rows get reviewed against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Stockton and Modesto price with Sacramento. Oakland and San Jose go with the Bay Area row. Orange County, Long Beach, Pasadena and the wider basin share the Los Angeles figure, and Chula Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad and Escondido share San Diego's.
Sacramento first, then everything else
There is one thing worth understanding about this corridor, and it will probably save you money.
California is 800 miles tall. Coming down I-5 from Puget Sound, the truck meets Sacramento first, at about 780 miles. Los Angeles is another 330 miles past it. San Diego is 120 miles past that. The price gap between California cities is not marketing. It is the map.
Sacramento to Seattle at $900 to $1,100 is the cheapest pairing on the lane, and the Bay Area is barely more. Some moves are flexible about where in California the car lands. If yours is, dropping it in Sacramento or Stockton and driving the last leg is a real option.
The flip side is that Los Angeles gets you the most trucks. It is the densest vehicle market in the western states. There is nearly always a carrier heading there, and nearly always an onward load waiting. Sacramento is cheapest. Los Angeles is easiest to schedule.
Washington to California Car Shipping Questions
The questions this corridor really generates, answered with its own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Washington to California?
The cost to ship a car from Washington state to California is typically $900 to $1,350 on an open trailer for an operable mid-size vehicle, and takes between 2 to 5 days in transit time. Your figure comes down to the two cities. Seattle or Tacoma to Sacramento is $900 to $1,150. Tacoma to Los Angeles is $900 to $1,200. Puget Sound to San Diego is $1,000 to $1,300.
How long does Washington to California car shipping take?
Two to five days on the road once the car is loaded. Sacramento and the Bay Area are the quick end at 2 to 3 days. Los Angeles is 3 to 4 days. San Diego is 3 to 5 days, and Bellingham to San Diego is the longest at 4 to 5 days. Add your pickup window for the full timeline.
How far is it from Washington to California?
Between 750 and 1,345 miles, depending on the pairing. Sacramento to Seattle is 750 miles. Tacoma to Los Angeles is 1,110. Lakewood to San Diego is 1,215, and Bellingham to San Diego is the longest common run at 1,345.
Which is the cheapest California destination from Washington?
Sacramento, and by a clear margin. It is the closest big California market to Puget Sound at about 780 miles, and it sits right on the I-5 line, so the truck reaches it first. Sacramento to Seattle at $900 to $1,100 is the best value pairing on the corridor.
Do you have offices in both Washington and California?
We do, and that is unusual. Lakewood, Washington and Los Angeles, California are two of our four staffed offices. This lane starts and finishes in cities where Smart Auto Move has people on the ground, and you can call either end.
Where exactly are those two offices?
Lakewood is at 5607 Boston Ave SW, Lakewood, WA 98499, on 253-200-5645. That is about 15 minutes from downtown Tacoma. Los Angeles is at 5111 Harold Way, Suite 301, Los Angeles, CA 90027, on 213-766-0064. Both are offices rather than yards, so your car is collected and delivered at your own addresses.
Where in Washington do you collect?
Right across the state. Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Everett, Renton, Kent, Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Olympia, DuPont, Federal Way, Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Vancouver, Bremerton, Silverdale, Yakima, the Tri-Cities and Spokane.
Why is Spokane quoted live rather than listed?
Because Spokane sits 280 miles east of the I-5 corridor, so a California-bound truck has to come and get it. The distance is similar to Seattle's, but the carrier mix changes week to week. Rather than publish a figure that might not hold, we price Spokane and the Tri-Cities for your real dates. Ask and you will have a number quickly.
Where in California do you deliver?
Everywhere on and off the I-5 spine. San Diego, Chula Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Escondido, Los Angeles, Orange County, Long Beach, Pasadena, Bakersfield, Fresno, San Jose, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, Stockton and Redding.
Is Los Angeles cheaper than San Diego?
Slightly, and the 120 miles between them is why. Tacoma to Los Angeles runs $900 to $1,200, while Tacoma to San Diego runs $1,000 to $1,300. Los Angeles is also the densest vehicle market in the western states, so more trucks head there and more onward loads wait.
Do you ship cars for military moves on this route?
Constantly. This is one of the busiest military vehicle corridors in the country. Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Station Everett and NAS Whidbey Island sit at the Washington end. Naval Base San Diego, NAS North Island, MCAS Miramar and Camp Pendleton sit at the California end. Our Lakewood office is minutes from the JBLM gates.
Can you deliver onto a base?
The handover happens just outside the gate rather than on post. A nine-car carrier cannot clear base access without credentials. Tell us it is a base delivery when you book, and we agree the meeting point before the driver sets off. Our two offices between them have done this many times.
What route does the truck take?
I-5 almost the whole way, one of the most heavily used freight corridors in the country. South from Puget Sound through Portland, down Oregon and over the Siskiyou Pass into California. Then Redding, Sacramento and the Central Valley toward Los Angeles. Bay Area deliveries branch west near Sacramento.
Does weather affect this lane?
One place, briefly. The Siskiyou Pass on the Oregon and California line climbs above 4,300 feet. In a winter storm it can call for chains, or close for a few hours. Drivers wait it out rather than push a loaded trailer over, which is the right call. The rest of I-5 stays low and open all year.
Is there a busy season on this corridor?
Summer is the heaviest, with family and college moves in the same months, and military orders cluster there too. Booking two to three weeks ahead in June, July and August gets you better dates. September, October and the late winter months are the quieter, better value stretches.
How soon can you collect my car in Washington?
Our standard pickup window is 6 days from booking. Expedited narrows it to 3 days, which is 72 hours. The I-5 corridor through Puget Sound carries heavy truck traffic all year, so collection often happens toward the front of the window.
Is expedited worth it on this lane?
Frequently yes, and here is why. Expedited cuts the pickup window from six days to three. It does not speed up the drive, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. But when the drive is only two to five days, three days off the front is a large share of your total timeline.
What is open transport?
The familiar two-level trailer carrying nine or ten cars, and every price on this page is an open price. It moves the large majority of cars on this corridor and it is the same equipment dealers receive new inventory on. Your car picks up road dust and arrives wanting a wash, which is the whole of the downside.
How much more is enclosed to California?
Enclosed runs about 80% more than open. Against $900 to $1,200 for Los Angeles, expect somewhere around $1,600 to $2,150. The car rides inside a closed trailer with no weather and no grit. It is the right call for a collector car, an exotic, anything low to the ground, or fresh paint.
Can you move a car that will not start?
Yes. It needs a trailer with a winch and a driver equipped to use it, and we have plenty of both. Budget $200 upward on top of the running price. Three answers decide which rig we send, so have them ready: does it roll, does it steer, does it brake.
What does a truck or large SUV add?
A mid-size SUV usually adds $75 to $150 over the sedan ranges here. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV such as a Suburban or an F-250 typically adds $150 to $300. Trailers are limited by height and weight, so a bigger vehicle takes room the driver could otherwise sell.
Can I ship an electric vehicle?
Yes, and plenty do on this corridor. Bring it to about half charge, give us the exact model so the weight is right, and switch off anything that wakes the car while it sits. The heavier EVs price a little above a comparable gas car, because weight is what a trailer is limited by.
Is my car insured the whole way?
Your vehicle moves under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, live from loading in Washington to unloading in California with nothing uncovered between. We confirm each carrier's coverage is active before dispatch and we will email you the certificate for your specific carrier whenever you ask.
What is your USDOT and MC number?
Smart Auto Move operates under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Both are public on the FMCSA SAFER system, and we would rather you checked them than took our word for it. Looking those numbers up is the quickest way to tell a real transport company from a website.
How long do I have to register the car in California?
Twenty days. The California DMV states that you must register a vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into the state. That is a tighter window than most states give. Shipping the car to land with you, rather than weeks later, makes the clock much easier to work with.
Does my car need a smog check in California?
Most likely yes. A smog check from a California smog station is required for gasoline 1976 and newer year models. Also diesels from 1998 and newer under 14,001 pounds GVWR, diesel hybrids included, and natural gas or propane vehicles under 14,001 pounds. Motorcycles are exempt.
Which vehicles skip the California smog check?
The DMV exempts a gasoline vehicle from 1975 or older, a diesel from 1997 or older or over 14,000 pounds, a natural gas vehicle over 14,000 pounds, and any electric vehicle. So a classic or an EV arriving from Washington has one fewer stop.
Does California inspect the car itself?
Yes, and it is quick. California asks for a Verification of Vehicle, DMV form REG 31. An authorized DMV employee, a law enforcement officer or a California-licensed vehicle verifier can complete it. It confirms the VIN on the car matches the paperwork, so the vehicle has to be in the state.
What is the smartest order to do the California paperwork in?
Get the car into California first, then the smog check, then the REG 31 verification, then the DMV. Both the smog and the verification need the physical car. That is the practical argument for shipping it early rather than leaving it in Washington while you settle in.
Can the car arrive before I do?
Yes, and many customers plan it that way. Send it to a relative, a friend, a workplace or a short-term rental while your own travel catches up. Give us the delivery contact at booking and tell us early if the address changes, so the driver has the right details before dispatch.
Will the truck reach my California address?
In most of California, yes. The exceptions are canyon roads, hillside streets in the Los Angeles basin, older San Francisco blocks, and apartments with a low covered entry. There the driver picks a wide lot nearby and meets you. It costs nothing and takes a few minutes.
Does someone need to be there at both ends?
Someone does, and it need not be you. Any responsible adult will do: a partner, a relative, a neighbor, a building manager, a coworker. They hand over or receive the keys, walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report. Give us their name and a cell number at booking.
Can I leave belongings in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it to around a hundred pounds, in the trunk and below the window line so the driver can see out. Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the vehicle rather than its contents, so anything valuable or hard to replace travels better with you.
How should I prepare the car?
Wash it, because dirt hides the marks the condition report should record. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Turn the alarm off. Then photograph all four corners, the roof and the wheels in daylight. Five minutes of that makes the handover in California simple.
What is the condition report?
It is the inspection you and the driver both sign at pickup, recording every existing mark on the car, and sign again at delivery. Keep your copy. Compare the car against it in good light before you sign it off in California, and take your own photographs again while you are there.
What if something is wrong at delivery?
Note it on the condition report before the driver leaves, photograph it, and call us that day. That written note at the curb is what makes a Carrier Cargo Insurance claim straightforward, and we file it with the carrier for you. It is uncommon and it resolves much faster when the paperwork happens on the spot.
Does the car change trailers on the way?
Not with us. Whoever loads it in Washington unloads it in California. No second company partway, no night in a storage yard. Damage in this business clusters at exactly that transfer, so a route without one removes the opportunity rather than insuring against it.
Can I ship two cars together?
Yes, and it usually beats two separate bookings. Two vehicles from one Washington address to one California address save the driver two stops, and that efficiency shows up on the second car. Ask for both at quote time and we will price them as a pair.
Can I reach the driver on the road?
You get the driver's name and direct number once the carrier is assigned. Drivers will tell you roughly where they are and give you a real delivery window about a day out. With offices at both ends of this lane, there is also always someone local to call.
How does payment work?
A deposit goes on a card once the carrier is assigned, and the balance is settled with the driver at delivery. That balance is usually cash, a cashier's check or a money order, and your driver confirms which they take when the delivery window is set.
Will the final price match the quote?
Yes. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. That is the Smart Price Promise. What changes a quote is a change in the facts, so tell us early and we re-price before dispatch rather than after.
Where is Smart Auto Move based?
Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida. Two of those four sit on this lane.
How do I get a real price for my move?
Use the form at the top of this page with both ZIP codes, the year, make and model, and whether the car runs. You will have a real figure in minutes rather than a teaser rate that moves later. You can also call Lakewood on 253-200-5645 or Los Angeles on 213-766-0064.
An office at each end of the lane
Smart Auto Move has four staffed offices in the country. Two of them sit on this route, which is true of almost nothing else we run.
5607 Boston Ave SW, Lakewood, WA 98499
253-200-5645 · National line 888-709-9078
At the pickup end, about 15 minutes from downtown Tacoma and minutes from Joint Base Lewis-McChord. An office rather than a yard, so your car is collected at your own address.
5111 Harold Way, Suite 301, Los Angeles, CA 90027
213-766-0064 · National line 888-709-9078
At the delivery end, supporting the whole California side of the corridor. Also an office rather than a yard, so your car comes to you.
What that buys you is not a slogan. People who know Puget Sound arrange the collection. People who know California pick it up as the truck gets close. Call either end and you reach someone who has worked this lane, not someone reading a screen.
Pickups run across the state: Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Everett, Renton, Kent, Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Olympia, DuPont, Federal Way, Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Vancouver, Bremerton, Silverdale, Yakima, the Tri-Cities and Spokane. There is more on the Washington end at the Tacoma page and the Washington car shipping page. The California end sits on the Los Angeles page and the California car shipping page.
The busiest military vehicle corridor in the country
Washington to California moves a great many service members' cars, and the reason is simply where the bases are.
The Washington end
Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Naval Base Kitsap, Naval Station Everett, NAS Whidbey Island and Fairchild. Our Lakewood office is minutes from the JBLM gates.
The California end
Naval Base San Diego, NAS North Island at Coronado, MCAS Miramar, Camp Pendleton, NAS Lemoore, Travis, Beale and Vandenberg. Our Los Angeles office covers all of it.
What it costs
JBLM to any of the San Diego installations runs $1,000 to $1,300 over about 1,180 to 1,225 miles in 3 to 5 days, the same as a civilian move to the same city.
Two practical points we will put in writing. A carrier cannot drive onto a base without credentials, so the handover happens at an agreed spot just outside the gate. One of our two offices sets that up before the driver leaves. And we take bookings before the report date is firm, adjusting once orders settle, rather than making you wait on paperwork.
The military car shipping page covers what to have ready, and the Seattle to San Diego page publishes the base-to-base figures installation by installation.
One road, and one pass to watch
This corridor is refreshingly simple. It is I-5 for almost the whole distance, one of the most heavily used freight routes in the United States.
South out of Puget Sound through Olympia and Vancouver, across the Columbia into Portland. Then the length of Oregon through Salem, Eugene, Roseburg and Medford, over the Siskiyou Pass into California, and on through Redding, Sacramento and the Central Valley toward Los Angeles. Bay Area deliveries branch west near Sacramento. San Diego deliveries carry on past Los Angeles.
The Siskiyou Pass is the only elevation worth naming. It climbs above 4,300 feet on the Oregon and California line. In a winter storm it can call for chains, or close for a few hours. Drivers stop and wait rather than take a loaded trailer over it, which is exactly what you want. That is the reasoning behind the day counts here rather than tighter promises.
Everything else on the route stays low. From April to October this lane runs about as cleanly as any in the country.
California gives you twenty days, and wants the car present
California's arrival paperwork is more involved than most states, and two of the three steps need the physical vehicle. That shapes when you should ship.
- You must register the vehicle within 20 days of becoming a resident or bringing it into the state, per the California DMV. That is tighter than the thirty days most states allow.
- A smog check from a California smog station is required for gasoline 1976 and newer year models. Also diesels from 1998 and newer under 14,001 pounds GVWR, diesel hybrids included, and natural gas or propane vehicles under 14,001 pounds. Motorcycles are exempt.
- Exempt from smog altogether: a gasoline vehicle that is a 1975 year model or older, a diesel that is 1997 or older or over 14,000 pounds, a natural gas vehicle over 14,000 pounds, and any electric vehicle.
- The car needs a Verification of Vehicle, DMV form REG 31, completed by an authorized DMV employee, a law enforcement officer or a California-licensed vehicle verifier.
So the order is simple. Get the car into California, then the smog check, then the REG 31 verification, then the DMV. Both middle steps need the vehicle in front of someone. That is the real argument for shipping it early rather than leaving it in Washington while you settle in.
A classic or an electric car has an easier run, since both skip the smog step. Keep your Washington coverage in force until the California policy starts. The car travels under the carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, so there is no gap on the trailer. You want none on the driveway either.
Who ships cars on this corridor
Job moves
The tech corridor runs both ways between Seattle and the Bay Area. A second car almost always ships rather than being driven 870 miles.
Military orders
The single steadiest pattern here, moving between the Puget Sound installations and the San Diego ones in both directions all year.
Students and snowbirds
UW, UCLA, USC, Berkeley and the UC system all trade students between the two states, and plenty of retirees keep a car at each end.
Our student discount page covers the college case. If you run this route seasonally, ask about booking both legs at once, because the ranges are the same in either direction.

Open, enclosed or expedited to California
Open transport carries almost every car on this corridor and all the prices here are open prices. Enclosed is the choice for a classic, an exotic, a low car or fresh paint. Budget about 80 percent above the open figure.
Expedited narrows the pickup window from six days to three. The drive does not shorten, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. But the drive here is only two to five days. Three days off the front is a large share of your total timeline, so this is a route where expedited earns its keep. The open and enclosed guide covers the trailer choice and the standard versus expedited guide covers the timing one.
A car that will not start ships perfectly well. It loads on a winch, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and telling us at quote time means the right truck is assigned from the start rather than swapped later.
The carrier behind your shipment
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole distance, with no transfer in Oregon and no night in a storage yard. Active FMCSA authority and a live insurance filing come first and nothing moves without both. After that comes the trailer, how often that driver works the I-5 corridor, and how their recent deliveries went.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from the Washington pickup to the California delivery, and the certificate is yours on request. Our own record is public on SAFER at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
