The cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Sacramento is typically $900 to $1,150 on an open trailer, and takes between two to three days in transit time. The run covers about 780 miles of I-5, prices the same in both directions, and the whole Sacramento region shares one figure.

How much does Tacoma to Sacramento car shipping cost?
Everything below is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, checked in September 2026. Sacramento and the valley towns around it share one figure.
| Route or vehicle | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tacoma to Sacramento | About 780 miles | 2 to 3 days | $900 to $1,150 |
| Sacramento back to Tacoma THE OTHER DIRECTION | About 780 miles | 2 to 3 days | $900 to $1,150 |
| Sedan or small crossover LOWER IN THE RANGE | About 780 miles | 2 to 3 days | Nearer $900 |
| Full-size pickup or three-row SUV HIGHER IN THE RANGE | About 780 miles | 2 to 3 days | Nearer $1,150 |
| Bay Area address instead ANOTHER 90 MILES WEST | About 870 miles | 2 to 3 days | Top of the range |
| Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. See how our national bands work.
Registering your Washington car in California
California writes its own emissions rules. That makes this the one lane where five minutes of reading pays off. The good news comes first: the rule most people worry about is the rule that covers them.
You are almost certainly fine. The California DMV allows a new resident to register a 49-state car when you first registered it yourself in your home state. For service members, the last state of duty counts too. A car you have owned and plated in Washington is exactly the case this rule was written for.
This is the case to plan around. California counts a car with fewer than 7,500 miles as new. A California resident who buys a 49-state car under that mileage cannot register it without an exemption. The simple fix: buy it, plate it in Washington, put some miles on it, then move.
- You have 20 days to register the car once you become a resident or take a job in California, according to the California DMV.
- Plan on a smog check when you register an out-of-state car. Gas models 1975 and older, diesels 1997 and older or over 14,000 pounds, and electric cars are exempt.
- The label under the hood names the standards your car was built to. If it says California, or all fifty states, you are in good shape.
- Bring the Washington title and registration, and expect a VIN verification on an out-of-state vehicle.
We move any car to California. We just like you to know where you stand before the truck is booked. If your case looks unusual, the DMV lists every exemption, and a quick call to them settles it.
Tacoma to Sacramento Car Shipping Questions
The questions we get asked most on this lane, answered with this route's own numbers rather than national averages.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Sacramento?
The cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Sacramento is typically $900 to $1,150 on an open trailer, and takes between two to three days in transit time. That covers a running mid-size car over about 780 miles, and the northbound trip prices the same.
How long does Tacoma to Sacramento car shipping take?
Two to three days on the road for about 780 miles. Your pickup window comes first: six days on Standard service, three on Expedited, counted from the first date you give us.
Is the trip back from Sacramento the same price?
Yes. Sacramento to Tacoma sits in the same $900 to $1,150 range, so a seasonal move down and back is easy to plan.
What does the price depend on?
Size first. A sedan or small crossover prices near the floor. A full-size pickup, a lifted truck or a three-row SUV prices near the ceiling. Then it is where in Northern California you are headed, and how loose your dates are.
How do I land nearer $900?
Offer three or four possible pickup days, ship a standard running car, and aim for the April to October stretch. Flexible dates let us put you on a truck already heading down the corridor.
What route do the trucks run?
I-5 the entire way. South through Portland, down the Willamette Valley past Salem and Eugene, over Siskiyou Pass at the California line, then through Redding into the top of the Central Valley.
Is Siskiyou Pass a problem in winter?
It is the one spot to plan around. At just over 4,300 feet it is the high point of I-5 anywhere. Chain controls go up several times between November and March, so add a day of buffer for a January move. The rest of the lane is flat and fast.
Does valley fog affect delivery?
Sometimes the timing, rarely the day. From late fall into February the Central Valley makes dense ground fog that clears by late morning, so a delivery can shift from the morning to the afternoon.
What is the easiest time of year to ship this lane?
April through October. No chain controls at Siskiyou, no valley fog, and constant truck traffic on I-5, which makes the two to three day estimate hold as well as any figure we publish.
Do the Sacramento suburbs cost the same as the city?
Yes. Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Davis, Woodland and the rest of the region all share the Sacramento range.
Will the truck come to my door in Sacramento?
In most of the metro, yes. The flat land and wide modern streets around Roseville, Elk Grove, Folsom, Natomas and Davis suit a full carrier, so direct delivery to the address is the normal outcome.
What about Midtown and East Sacramento?
Those hand over close by instead. The lettered-and-numbered grid has narrow streets, a heavy elm canopy and alley garages no trailer can enter, so the driver picks a broader street or a lot minutes away.
Can you deliver in the foothills above Folsom?
Often yes. It depends on the road rather than the town. El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville and the climbs toward Auburn run from simple to tight, so give us the address and the driver plans the approach.
Do you deliver to San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose?
Yes, on this same lane, at the top of the range. The Bay Area is another ninety miles west. Say so at quote time and we set the handover spot in advance, since those streets give a nine-car trailer few places to stop.
Can any car be registered in California?
Most can, and the rule people worry about usually helps them. Moving to California from another state? The DMV lets you register a 49-state car if you first registered it yourself in your home state. For service members, the last state of duty counts too. A car you have owned and plated in Washington fits.
What is the 7,500-mile rule?
California counts a car with fewer than 7,500 miles as new. A California resident who buys a 49-state car below that mileage needs an exemption to register it. It only bites if you buy right before moving, so plate it in Washington first and put some miles on it.
Where is the emissions label?
Under the hood, on a sticker stating which standards the car was built to meet. Wording that names California, or all fifty states, is the version you want to see. If it names federal standards only and the car is nearly new, a call to the California DMV before booking settles it.
How long do I have to register in California?
Twenty days from the day you become a resident or take a job there, per the state DMV. Bring the Washington title and registration. An out-of-state car also gets a VIN check.
Do I need a smog check?
Plan on one when you register an out-of-state car. Gas models 1975 and older are exempt. So are diesels 1997 and older or over 14,000 pounds, and electric cars.
Open or enclosed to Sacramento?
Open covers nearly every car on this corridor and it is what the range reflects. Enclosed is the pick for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint or a low front end, and it adds about 80 percent, so a $1,000 open move is roughly $1,800 enclosed.
Is the car insured during the trip?
Yes. The carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers it from the Tacoma pickup through the Sacramento delivery, and we can email you the certificate once your truck is assigned.
Is it okay to leave things in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.
How should the car be ready for pickup?
Give it a wash, take photos of all four sides and the odometer, and leave roughly a quarter tank of fuel. Remove a roof box, a bike rack or a Good To Go pass. Tell the driver about an alarm or a starting quirk.
Will a trailer fit my Tacoma street?
Most streets work fine. South Tacoma, Fife and the Tideflats load at the curb without a fuss. The North End, Proctor, Hilltop and the Stadium District are steep and parked solid, so loading happens at a wide lot on Pacific Avenue, 6th Avenue or by the Tacoma Mall.
Does someone need to be present?
Yes, at both ends, to hand over the car and sign the condition report. It can be any adult you name, such as a partner, a neighbor or a coworker. Send us their name and number when you book.
Do you ship to Beale or Travis Air Force Base?
Yes, year-round. Beale is about forty miles north of Sacramento near Marysville, Travis is a similar distance southwest at Fairfield, and our Lakewood office sits next to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Read the orders for the vehicle allowance, which follows the move type.
Will the valley heat hurt my car?
Not the trip, and it is worth a look afterward. Sacramento runs above a hundred degrees for much of July and August, so check the coolant and battery in the first few weeks, and treat a windshield shade as standard equipment.
When should I book this lane?
A couple of weeks suits most of the year. Give it three around late August and May, when UC Davis, Sacramento State and the Tacoma campuses all turn over at once. Expedited tightens the pickup window to three days when the date is locked.
How does payment work?
You place a deposit at booking. The balance goes to the driver at delivery by cashier's check, money order or cash. Prefer one payment? A card can cover the whole thing up front.
What if my dates change?
Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. Once we assign one and send you the driver's details, that money is spoken for. It is not gone, though. You can push the move back and use it on a later shipment.
What if the car does not run?
It still ships. A truck with a winch takes care of it, and that puts $200 or more on top of the running price. Mention it with your quote request and the right equipment is lined up.
Can I follow the truck?
Yes. The driver's number is yours for a call or a text, our emails follow the trip, and GPS tracking is there when the carrier's truck has it.
What route does Tacoma to Sacramento auto transport take?
One road, start to finish. The truck joins I-5 south of Tacoma and never leaves it. South through Portland, down the Willamette Valley past Salem and Eugene, then over the Siskiyou summit at the California line. From there it is Redding and the top of the Central Valley.
At just over 4,300 feet above Ashland it is the high point of I-5 anywhere in the country, and the single place this lane meets winter. Chain controls go up on it several times between November and March, which is why a two-day run can become three in January. Everything north and south of it is flat and fast.
From late fall into February the Central Valley makes dense ground fog that thins out by late morning. Drivers plan around it, so it tends to move a delivery from the morning to the afternoon rather than adding a day to the trip.
Because it is a single-highway lane with a mild climb and no mountain crossing in Washington or Oregon, this is one of the more predictable runs we quote out of Pierce County. April through October it holds its schedule about as well as any route on our network.
Delivery across the Sacramento region
Sacramento is an easy metro for a full-size carrier. The land is flat, the suburbs are modern and wide, and I-5, Highway 99, US-50 and I-80 reach nearly all of it, so the truck usually pulls up at the address itself.
Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Natomas, Davis, Woodland, West Sacramento and Lincoln. Wide streets, newer subdivisions and room to turn a nine-car trailer.
Midtown, East Sacramento and the lettered-and-numbered grid have narrow streets, a heavy elm canopy and alley garages a carrier cannot enter. The driver picks a broader street or a retail lot a few minutes out.
The foothill roads above Folsom are worth flagging at quote time. El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville and the climbs toward Auburn run from simple to tight, and it depends on the road rather than the town. Give us the address and the driver plans the approach. Either way the handover takes about ten minutes and adds nothing to the price.
Cities and communities we deliver to include Sacramento, Roseville, Rocklin, Elk Grove, Folsom, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Natomas, West Sacramento, Davis, Woodland, Lincoln, Loomis, Granite Bay, El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville, Auburn, Galt, Vacaville, Fairfield, Stockton and Chico.
Bay Area addresses ride the same lane
San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Jose and the peninsula all ship on this route. They sit at the top of the range, because they are another ninety miles west of Sacramento into much heavier traffic.
What changes is the delivery, not the trip. Bay Area streets bring hills, tight corners and fewer legal spots for a nine-car trailer. So a meeting point gets set in advance more often than in Sacramento. Tell us the address is a Bay Area one when you ask for the quote, and we plan it that way from the start.
Where Tacoma to Sacramento car shipping collects
We pick up across Pierce County and the south Sound: Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Fife, Federal Way, Auburn, Gig Harbor, DuPont, Spanaway, Bonney Lake and Olympia.
The flat blocks in South Tacoma, Fife and the Tideflats load at the curb without any trouble. The North End, Proctor, Hilltop and the Stadium District climb hard and park tight, so the driver loads from a wide lot on Pacific Avenue, 6th Avenue or near the Tacoma Mall instead.

253-200-5645 · National line 888-709-9078
About 15 minutes from downtown Tacoma, next to Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
Our Lakewood office sits on the same I-5 your car is about to travel down. Change a pickup and you are talking to someone who knows the street. Every route we run out of Tacoma is priced together on the Tacoma car shipping page. The California end has its own pages for Sacramento car shipping and California car shipping.
Shipping a car on orders from JBLM to Beale or Travis
Beale Air Force Base sits about forty miles north of Sacramento near Marysville, and Travis Air Force Base is a similar distance southwest at Fairfield. Both are on this lane, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord runs along the edge of Lakewood where our Washington office is.
Give us the earliest and latest dates your orders allow rather than one fixed day. The car then leaves Tacoma sooner, and usually for less. Check the orders for the vehicle allowance, which follows the move type, and your transportation office can confirm which one applies.
The California rule above covers service members too. A 49-state car you first registered in your last state of duty can be registered in California. Our military car shipping page has the rest.
A Puget Sound car arriving in the Central Valley
Check the cooling system
Sacramento spends much of July and August above a hundred degrees. A coolant and battery check in the first few weeks is the cheapest insurance there is.
Look at the wiper blades
Valley summers are long, hot and almost rainless, which is hard on rubber. Fresh blades before the first real rain in November beat discovering it in traffic.
Buy a sunshade
Valley sun works on a dashboard far faster than Puget Sound cloud ever did. A windshield shade is the first thing worth picking up.

Open, enclosed or expedited to Sacramento
An open trailer carries nearly every car on this corridor and it is what the quoted range covers. An enclosed trailer suits a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and it keeps the car sealed until it is out of the valley sun. Budget about 80 percent more than the open price.
Expedited narrows the pickup window to three days when a date will not move, which is worth most around a report date or a closing. There is more in our open and enclosed guide.
A car that will not start still ships. It rides on a winch-equipped truck, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and telling us at quote time means the right equipment is booked from the start.
The carrier behind your Tacoma to Sacramento shipment
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole lane. Current FMCSA authority and insurance on file get a carrier in the door. After that we look at three things: the trailer, whether the driver already works the I-5 corridor, and how their last loads went.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the car from the Tacoma pickup to the Sacramento delivery, with the certificate emailed to you. Our own record is open to anyone at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368 on SAFER.
