Texas to New Jersey Car Shipping

The cost to ship a car from Texas to New Jersey is typically $1,300 to $1,850 on an open trailer, and takes between four to seven days in transit time. The Texas city sets the number. New Jersey is small enough that the whole state shares one figure.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
How much does Texas to New Jersey car shipping cost?
Every figure here is an operable mid-size car on an open trailer, current as of September 2026. Find your Texas city in the left column, since the starting point is what moves the distance.
| Starting city | Distance | Days on the road | Open transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas or Fort Worth to New Jersey SHORTEST | About 1,550 miles | 4 to 5 days | $1,300 to $1,500 |
| Houston to New Jersey | About 1,630 miles | 4 to 5 days | $1,350 to $1,550 |
| Austin to New Jersey | About 1,750 miles | 5 to 6 days | $1,400 to $1,600 |
| San Antonio to New Jersey | About 1,830 miles | 5 to 6 days | $1,450 to $1,650 |
| El Paso to New Jersey LONGEST | About 2,140 miles | 6 to 7 days | $1,600 to $1,850 |
| Any New Jersey address ONE STATE, ONE PRICE | State is 170 miles end to end | Same | No change |
| Any route of 1,500 to 2,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | 1,500 to 2,500 miles | 4 to 7 days | $1,250 to $2,100 |
These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. See how our national bands work.
The northbound and southbound trips price the same. Our New Jersey to Texas page covers the return direction.
One figure covers the whole of New Jersey
New Jersey is about 170 miles from the top to the bottom, and the drive from Texas is at least 1,550. A truck already coming up the coast reaches every part of the state on the same run, so Newark and Cape May share a price.
Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Hoboken, Clifton, Edison, Woodbridge and Iselin. The densest part of the state, and the part where the handover spot is worth agreeing in advance.
Princeton, New Brunswick, Trenton, Freehold, Toms River, Asbury Park, Brick and the shore towns. Wider streets, easier access and straightforward door delivery most of the time.
- Give us the town rather than "New Jersey" and the driver plans the last twenty miles properly.
- A pickup window of several days, rather than one morning, is the lever that matters most on a run this long.
- Shore addresses in July and August take longer to reach through summer traffic, so a wider delivery window helps.
Texas to New Jersey Car Shipping Questions
The questions we get asked most on this route, answered with its own numbers rather than national averages.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Texas to New Jersey?
The cost to ship a car from Texas to New Jersey is typically $1,300 to $1,850 on an open trailer, and takes between four to seven days in transit time. Dallas starts at $1,300 to $1,500 over about 1,550 miles, and El Paso runs $1,600 to $1,850 over about 2,140 miles.
How long does Texas to New Jersey car shipping take?
Four to seven days on the road. Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston are four to five days. Austin and San Antonio are five to six. El Paso is six to seven. Your pickup window runs first: six days on Standard service, three on Expedited.
Does the New Jersey town change the price?
No. The state is only about 170 miles end to end, and the drive from Texas is at least 1,550, so Newark and Cape May share one figure. It is the Texas city that moves the number.
Which Texas city is cheapest to ship from?
Dallas or Fort Worth. They sit furthest northeast, which trims roughly a hundred miles off a Houston start and several hundred off El Paso.
Is the trip back from New Jersey the same price?
Yes. Northbound and southbound price the same, and our New Jersey to Texas page covers the return direction.
What decides where my quote lands?
Start with the vehicle. Something sedan-sized lands at the bottom of its row, and a full-size pickup or a three-row SUV lands at the top. After that, the width of your date window and the access at both addresses finish the number.
How do I keep the price down?
Name several workable pickup days instead of one, and send a standard running car. That combination gets you onto a trailer already rolling east, and it beats every other saving available here.
Which highways does this lane use?
One of two. Inland runs I-30 and I-40 by way of Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville, then I-81 north and I-78 east. Coastal runs I-10 and I-20 into Atlanta, then I-85 and I-95 up through Charlotte, Richmond and Baltimore.
Why do drivers prefer the inland route?
It skips the Washington and Baltimore traffic. On paper the coastal line is shorter, and in practice the inland one often arrives just as fast.
Does winter weather affect this route?
Occasionally, and mostly at the New Jersey end. A snow day in the Northeast can move a delivery by a day. The Texas end and the middle of the run are rarely the issue.
Will the truck come to my door in New Jersey?
In the suburbs and along the shore, almost always. Edison, Woodbridge, Princeton, Freehold, Toms River, Brick, Cherry Hill, Parsippany and similar towns have the room a full carrier needs.
What about Newark, Jersey City or Hoboken?
Those meet close by. Street parking is full and the turns are tight, so the driver picks a lot or a wider street a few minutes away and the handover takes about ten minutes.
Why can a carrier not use the Garden State Parkway?
Commercial vehicles are restricted along much of its northern stretch, so car carriers work off the New Jersey Turnpike and the interstates. A meeting point near a Turnpike exit is often the quickest way to get your car.
Do you deliver to the Jersey Shore?
Yes, at the same price. Toms River, Brick, Asbury Park, Point Pleasant and the rest of the shore are easy ground. In July and August, allow a wider delivery window for summer traffic.
Do you cover Iselin and the Woodbridge area?
Yes. Iselin is one of our New Jersey service areas, so shipments into that side of the state are arranged on the national line with that coverage in mind.
Can the truck load at my Texas address?
Suburban streets rarely give any trouble. In the city centers the driver loads from a lot or a wider street nearby instead. Tell us the specific suburb, not just the metro, and that gets built into the schedule.
Who handles my Texas pickup?
Both Houston and McKinney are Smart Auto Move service areas, and pickups there go through 888-709-9078. There is more about the Texas end on our Houston car shipping page.
Open or enclosed to New Jersey?
Nearly everything moves open here, and that is what the table prices. Choose enclosed for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint or a low front end, and for keeping winter road salt off the underside. Add about 80 percent, so a $1,400 open move is roughly $2,520 enclosed.
What insurance covers the car?
The carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, running from the Texas pickup through to the New Jersey delivery. Once your truck is assigned we can email you the certificate.
Can I put a few things in the trunk?
Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.
How should the car be ready for pickup?
A wash helps the photos, so take those of all four sides and the odometer, and keep the tank around a quarter full. Remove toll tags, roof boxes and bike racks, and flag any alarm or starting quirk for the driver.
Does a person have to meet the truck?
Yes, at both ends, to release the car and sign the condition report. A friend, neighbor or relative can stand in for you, and we just need their number at booking.
What does registering in New Jersey involve?
The state says a vehicle transferred into New Jersey has to be registered at a motor vehicle agency, so bring the Texas title and registration. Line up New Jersey insurance first, since proof of it is part of registering.
Does New Jersey inspect cars?
Yes, once every two years, and a new vehicle gets a five-year window before its first inspection. It is done at a state inspection station.
Which cars are exempt from New Jersey inspection?
Gasoline passenger vehicles from model year 1995 and older at 8,500 pounds or less, fully electric vehicles, motorcycles, and approved historic and collector vehicles.
Is there anything else a Texan should know on arrival?
One small thing at the first gas station: in New Jersey an attendant pumps the gas for you. Beyond that, a battery and tire check before the first winter is the useful bit of preparation.
How early should I book?
Two to three weeks is comfortable for most of the year. Stretch that to three around the first of the month and in late summer, when Northeast moves peak. Expedited gets the pickup window down to three days when your date will not move.
How does payment work?
Deposit first, balance to the driver when the car arrives, by cashier's check, money order or cash. Prefer to settle it all at once? A card covers the full amount at booking.
What if my dates change?
Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. Once we assign one and send you the driver's details, that money is spoken for. It is not gone, though. You can push the move back and use it on a later shipment.
Do you move cars that are not running?
Yes, on a truck fitted with a winch. That adds $200 or more to the running price, and flagging it on the quote request gets the right equipment booked.
Can I follow the truck?
Yes. Call or text the driver on the number we send you, follow our email updates, and use GPS tracking wherever the carrier's truck supports it.
What route does Texas to New Jersey auto transport take?
Two corridors carry most of this traffic, and the driver picks by where the load starts and what else is on the trailer.
I-30 and I-40 east through Little Rock, Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville, then north on I-81 through the Shenandoah Valley and east on I-78 into New Jersey. It skips the Washington and Baltimore traffic entirely, which is why many drivers prefer it.
I-10 and I-20 east to Atlanta, then I-85 and I-95 north through Charlotte, Richmond, Washington and Baltimore. It is the shorter line on paper and the busier one in practice.
One local detail that shapes the last hour: the Garden State Parkway restricts commercial vehicles along much of its northern stretch, so car carriers work off the New Jersey Turnpike and the interstates instead. That is part of why a meeting point near a Turnpike exit often gets your car to you faster than a tight residential street would.
Where Texas to New Jersey car shipping collects
We pick up across the Texas metros: Houston, Katy, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, Pearland, Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Arlington, Irving, Austin, Round Rock, San Antonio, New Braunfels, Waco, College Station, Corpus Christi, Lubbock, Midland, Odessa and El Paso.
A nine-car trailer works comfortably in most Texas suburbs, so the truck usually loads right at the address. City centers in Houston, Dallas and Austin leave less space, and there the driver arranges a nearby lot or a wider cross street, which adds about ten minutes and nothing to the price.
Houston and McKinney are covered as Smart Auto Move service areas, with pickups booked through 888-709-9078. For the Texas side in depth, see the Houston car shipping page; for rates across the state, the Texas car shipping page.
Delivery across New Jersey
Most of the state is easy ground for a full carrier. The suburbs, the corridor towns along the Turnpike and nearly all of the shore give a driver room to unload at the address.
Edison, Woodbridge, Iselin, Princeton, New Brunswick, Freehold, Toms River, Brick, Cherry Hill, Marlton, Parsippany, Morristown and most suburban and shore addresses.
Downtown Newark, Jersey City, Hoboken and Union City, where street parking is full and the turns are tight. The driver picks a lot or a wider street a few minutes away and the handover takes about ten minutes.
Iselin is one of our New Jersey service areas, so shipments into the Woodbridge and Edison side of the state are handled with that coverage in mind and arranged on the national line. The Iselin car shipping page and the New Jersey car shipping page cover that end in more detail.
Towns we deliver to include Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, Woodbridge, Iselin, Clifton, Hoboken, Bayonne, Union, Parsippany, Morristown, Princeton, New Brunswick, Trenton, Freehold, Toms River, Brick, Asbury Park, Cherry Hill, Camden, Vineland and Atlantic City.
Registering and inspecting your car in New Jersey
Two steps here, and the second one surprises people coming from Texas.
- Register at a New Jersey motor vehicle agency. The state says that if you transfer a vehicle into New Jersey, you are required to register it at an agency, so bring the Texas title and registration.
- Line up New Jersey insurance first. The state asks for proof of it as part of registering.
- New Jersey inspects vehicles once every two years, and a new vehicle gets a five-year window before its first one, according to the New Jersey MVC.
- Gasoline passenger vehicles from model year 1995 and older at 8,500 pounds or less are exempt, along with fully electric vehicles, motorcycles and approved historic and collector vehicles.
Inspection is free at a state inspection station, and the appointment is the only errand on this list a Texan will not recognize. One more small thing worth knowing before you pull into your first gas station: in New Jersey an attendant pumps the gas for you.
A Texas car settling into the Northeast
Winter is a real season here
Salt, slush and cold mornings are new to a car from Houston or Austin. A battery check before December is the single best thing to do.
Tires earn their keep
All-seasons that never saw ice in Texas have an easier job than they will in a North Jersey January. Worth a look at the tread depth on arrival.
Parking gets tighter
A full-size pickup that fit everywhere in Texas is a different animal in Hoboken or Jersey City. Plan the parking before the car lands.

Open, enclosed or expedited to New Jersey
An open trailer carries nearly every car on this route and it is what every price here reflects. An enclosed trailer suits a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and on a winter move it keeps road salt off the underside. Budget about 80 percent more than the open price.
Expedited narrows the pickup window to three days when a date will not move, which earns its keep around a lease handover or a closing. There is a fuller comparison in our open and enclosed guide.
A car that will not start ships on this lane too. Loading is done with a winch, which puts $200 or more on top of the running price. Tell us at quote time and the right equipment comes out.
The carrier behind your Texas to New Jersey shipment
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 handles the whole run. We start with active FMCSA authority and insurance on file, then weigh three more things: the trailer itself, how often that driver works the eastern corridors, and what their last deliveries looked like.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the car from the Texas pickup through the New Jersey delivery, with the certificate emailed to you. Our own record is open to anyone at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368 on SAFER.
