The cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Portland is typically $450 to $600 on an open trailer, and takes one day in transit time. It is 145 miles of I-5, the shortest lane we run out of Pierce County, and it prices the same in either direction.

How much does Tacoma to Portland car shipping cost?

Open trailer prices for a running mid-size car, reviewed September 2026. The Portland metro shares one figure, and Vancouver, Washington does too.

Any route under 500 miles NATIONAL BANDUnder 500 miles1 to 2 days$450 to $900

These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. See how our national bands work.

Short lanes surprise people, because the price sits closer to a day of a driver's work than to the length of the drive. Loading a car, strapping it down, crossing a state line and unloading it takes the same care over 145 miles as it does over 1,400, and the slot your car occupies on the trailer is the same slot either way. That is why this route lands at the floor of our under-500-mile band rather than at some fraction of a long-haul price.

Ship it or drive it? An honest look at 145 miles

This is the one lane where we say out loud that shipping is not automatically the right answer. A single car, one free afternoon and a driver who does not mind I-5 makes for a simple drive. Here is where each choice earns its keep.

Shipping makes sense when

You are moving two or more cars and only have one driver. You are following a moving truck and cannot split up. The car is a classic, a project or a lease you would rather not add miles to. You are flying down and want the car waiting. Nobody in the household can take a full day out.

Driving makes sense when

It is one running car, you have the day, and a friend can collect you. The drive is under three hours in clear traffic, and you get to keep your own schedule. Some customers drive one car and ship the other, which is the most common split we see on this route.

  • Two cars, one driver: shipping one of them usually costs less than a second round trip plus a night away.
  • A lease with a tight mileage allowance: 145 miles each way adds up faster than people expect.
  • Moving day itself: nobody wants to hand off keys in two cities on the same afternoon.

Tacoma to Portland Car Shipping Questions

The questions we get asked most on this lane, answered with this route's own numbers rather than national averages.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Portland?

The cost to ship a car from Tacoma to Portland is typically $450 to $600 on an open trailer, and takes one day in transit time. That covers a running mid-size car over 145 miles, and the same range applies coming back north.

How long does Tacoma to Portland car shipping take?

One day on the road. The pickup window comes first: six days on Standard service, three on Expedited, counted from the first date you give us.

Is the run back from Portland priced the same?

Yes. Portland to Tacoma sits in the same $450 to $600 range, which makes a round trip simple to plan for a car going down for a season and coming home.

Why does a 145-mile move cost this much?

Because the price follows the work rather than the distance. The driver still loads, secures, hauls and unloads your car, and it still takes a slot on the trailer that a longer-paying load could have used. Short lanes sit at the floor of our under-500-mile band for that reason.

Is it cheaper to drive the car myself?

For one running car and a free afternoon, often yes, and we will tell you so. Shipping wins when there are two cars and one driver, when the car is a classic or a low-mileage lease, or when a moving day leaves nobody able to spend the day on I-5.

Can you move two cars at once?

Yes, and this is the most common booking on the lane. Both cars can go on the same trailer, or you drive one and we carry the other. Quote both at the same time and we will look at the pairing together.

Can pickup and delivery happen on the same day?

It often does, since the drive is under three hours. What we promise is the pickup window and one day of road time, so if a same-day handoff matters to you, say so and we will look for a driver who can commit to it.

Which road does the truck take?

I-5 the whole way: south past DuPont and the Nisqually flats, through Olympia, Centralia, Chehalis and Kelso, then over the Columbia into the metro.

Does the Interstate Bridge slow things down?

Only in minutes. The I-5 spans lift for river traffic and traffic above waits while they do. Plenty of drivers on this route take I-205 and the Glenn Jackson Bridge instead, which is a fixed span. Either way your price is unchanged.

Does winter affect this route?

Very little. The lane runs alongside the Cascades instead of over them, so Snoqualmie, White and Chinook passes are not involved. Wet pavement through Lewis County is the usual winter story, and one clear day is all this trip needs.

Do the Portland suburbs cost the same as the city?

Yes. Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Lake Oswego, Gresham, Happy Valley, Oregon City and the rest of the metro all share the Portland range.

Will the truck come to my door in Portland?

In the suburbs and outer east side, almost always. The newer streets and wide arterials out there suit a full carrier, so the trailer reaches the address itself.

What about the Pearl District, downtown or inner Southeast?

Those go to a nearby handover point. Narrow older grids, cars parked both sides and a low tree canopy leave a nine-car trailer nowhere to work, so the driver picks a wider cross street or a retail lot a few minutes out.

My building has a parking garage. Is that a problem?

Only for the truck. Garage clearances are too low for a car carrier, so plan on meeting the driver at street level outside. It takes about ten minutes and nothing is added to the price.

Is Vancouver, Washington the same delivery as Portland?

Same price, different state. A Vancouver address keeps the whole move inside Washington, so your plates and registration stay as they are. Tell us which side of the Columbia you are on when you request the quote.

What puts my quote at $450 rather than $600?

Vehicle size leads. A sedan or small crossover sits near the bottom of the range, while a full-size pickup, a lifted truck or a three-row SUV sits near the top. Date flexibility settles the rest.

How do I land at the low end?

Offer three or four possible pickup days instead of one, and ship a standard-size running car. Flexible dates let us put you on a truck that is already making this run.

Open or enclosed on a run this short?

Open covers nearly every car here and it is what the range reflects. Enclosed is worth it for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint or a low front end, and it adds about 80 percent, so a $525 open move is roughly $945 enclosed.

Is the car covered while it is on the truck?

Yes. The carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers it from the Tacoma pickup through the Portland delivery, and we can email you the certificate once your truck is assigned.

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.

How should I get the car ready?

Wash it, photograph each side and the odometer, and leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Pull off a roof box, a bike rack or a Good To Go pass, and mention an alarm or any starting quirk.

Will a trailer fit my street in Tacoma?

In most of the city, yes. South Tacoma, Fife and the flat blocks near I-5 load at the curb without trouble. The North End, Proctor, Hilltop and the Stadium District are steep and tightly parked, so the driver works from a wide lot minutes away.

Does someone have to be there?

Someone does, at both ends, to release the car and sign the condition report. Any adult you name can do it: a partner, a neighbor, a coworker or a colleague at the new office. Give us the name and number at booking.

How soon do I register the car in Oregon?

Once you are an Oregon resident the car needs Oregon title and registration, and Oregon DMV allows 30 days from the date of sale to apply before a late fee. An out-of-state title also means a VIN inspection, so bring the title and your current registration.

Do I need a DEQ emissions test in Portland?

Many vehicles do. DEQ tests 1975 and newer gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles registered inside the Portland boundaries, plus lighter diesels. A model year within the last four years is exempt, and so are fully electric vehicles and motorcycles.

What if I keep my Washington plates?

That is fine if Washington is still where you live. Students and people working in Portland while keeping a Washington home do it regularly, because the requirement follows residency rather than the car's parking spot.

How far ahead should I book?

A week or two is plenty for most of the year. Give it two to three weeks around the end of the month, when leases turn over and moving trucks fill up. Expedited narrows the pickup window to three days when your date is fixed.

How does payment work?

A deposit when you book, then the balance to the driver at delivery by cashier's check, money order or cash. A card can cover the full amount at booking if you prefer.

What if my dates change?

Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. Once we assign one and send you the driver's details, that money is spoken for. It is not gone, though. You can push the move back and use it on a later shipment.

What if the car will not start?

It still goes. A winch-equipped truck handles it, and that adds $200 or more to the running price. Flag it when you ask for the quote so the right equipment is booked.

Can I follow the truck?

Yes. You get the driver's number for a call or a text, our email updates track the trip, and GPS tracking is available where the carrier's equipment supports it.

Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington?

They sit five minutes apart across the Columbia River and they are two different deliveries. Tell us which side at quote time and the paperwork matches from the start.

Portland, Oregon

Delivery is in Oregon, so registration, title work and the DEQ emissions rules below come into play once you are a resident. Same price range, same single day on the road.

Vancouver, Washington

Still a Washington delivery, which keeps your plates and your registration where they already are. The truck crosses the river only if your address is on the Oregon side.

We also deliver on both sides of the line in Camas, Washougal, Battle Ground and Ridgefield on the Washington side, and in Troutdale, Fairview and Wood Village on the Oregon side.

145 miles of I-5, and the bridges at the end

There is one road on this lane and almost no drama on it. The truck picks up in Pierce County, joins I-5 south past DuPont and the Nisqually flats, runs through Olympia, Centralia, Chehalis and Kelso, then arrives at the Columbia.

The crossing is the only part worth knowing about. The I-5 Interstate Bridge is an older pair of spans that lift for river traffic, and a lift stops everything above it for a few minutes. Many drivers on this run take I-205 and the Glenn Jackson Bridge instead, which is a fixed span and drops them straight onto the east side of the metro. Neither choice changes your price.

Weather barely touches this route. It runs alongside the Cascades rather than across them, so Snoqualmie, White and Chinook passes never enter the picture. A wet winter stretch of I-5 through Lewis County, or an east wind day in the Columbia River Gorge, is the most this lane usually deals with, and the single day of road time means one clear day is all it needs.

Where a carrier can reach in the Portland metro

Portland is a mixed bag for a nine-car trailer, and knowing which half you live in makes the delivery easy. The suburbs are straightforward. The inner neighborhoods take a short walk.

Straight to the door

Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin, Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Clackamas, Gresham, Troutdale and most of outer east Portland. Wide arterials, newer streets and room to turn a full rig around.

From a lot a few minutes away

The Pearl District, downtown, Northwest 23rd, and the older grids in inner Southeast and Northeast around Hawthorne, Division, Alberta and Sellwood. Narrow streets, parked cars on both sides and a low tree canopy leave a trailer no room, so the driver sets a wider cross street or a retail lot as the handover point.

Structured parking is the other thing to flag. A condo garage in the Pearl or a downtown apartment stack has clearances a car carrier cannot use, so plan on meeting the truck outside. The handover takes about ten minutes, and it costs nothing extra.

Cities and communities we deliver to include Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, Tualatin, Sherwood, Wilsonville, Lake Oswego, West Linn, Milwaukie, Oregon City, Happy Valley, Clackamas, Gladstone, Gresham, Troutdale, Fairview, Forest Grove, Cornelius and St. Helens, plus Vancouver, Camas and Battle Ground on the Washington side.

Registering your car in Oregon

If the move makes you an Oregon resident, the car needs Oregon title and registration. Oregon DMV allows 30 days from the date of sale to file an application before a late fee applies, and an out-of-state title means a VIN inspection as part of the paperwork, so bring the title and your current registration.

Emissions come next. The Oregon DEQ vehicle inspection program covers 1975 and newer gasoline, hybrid and alternative-fuel vehicles registered inside the Portland testing boundaries, along with lighter diesels. A vehicle whose model year falls within the last four years is exempt, and so are fully electric vehicles and motorcycles, according to DEQ.

Two happy details for anyone arriving from Washington. Oregon has no general sales tax, and a Vancouver delivery skips the Oregon side of all of this, because the requirement follows where you live rather than where the truck stopped.

Where Tacoma to Portland car shipping collects

We pick up across Pierce County and the south Sound: Tacoma, Lakewood, University Place, Puyallup, Fife, Federal Way, Auburn, Gig Harbor, DuPont, Spanaway, Bonney Lake and Olympia.

Curbside loading is easy in South Tacoma, Fife and the flat blocks near I-5. The North End, Proctor, Hilltop and the Stadium District climb hard and park tight, so the driver picks a wide lot within a few minutes and loads there instead.

Open, enclosed or expedited to Portland

An open trailer handles nearly every car on this lane and it is what the quoted range covers. An enclosed trailer is the choice for a classic, a collector car, an exotic, fresh paint or a low front end, and it keeps I-5 road spray off the finish. Budget about 80 percent more than the open price.

Expedited narrows the pickup window to three days when a date will not move, which matters most around the end of a lease or a closing date. Our open and enclosed guide puts the two trailer types next to each other.

A car that will not start still ships on this lane. It rides on a winch-equipped truck, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and saying so when you request the quote means the right equipment is booked from the start.

The carrier behind your Tacoma to Portland shipment

One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 handles the whole run. Current FMCSA authority and insurance on file are the entry requirement, and past that we weigh the equipment, the corridors the driver already works and how their earlier loads went before this one goes out.

That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the car from the Tacoma pickup to the Portland delivery, and the certificate is emailed to you. Our own record is open to anyone at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368 on SAFER.
