California to New Jersey Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car from California to New Jersey is typically $1,700 to $2,100 on an open trailer, and takes between 7 to 11 days in transit time. Southern California runs $1,700 to $1,950 over about 2,780 miles. Northern California runs $1,825 to $2,100 over about 2,900. Two things make this lane easier to explain than most: one interstate runs the whole way, and New Jersey is one price end to end.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Our extensive network allows us to serve customers across the continental U.S. with reliable vehicle transport from coast to coast.
Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
One interstate runs this entire lane, and almost no other lane can say that
Most coast to coast routes are a stitch of three or four highways. This one has a road of its own.
Interstate 80 starts at US 101 in San Francisco and ends at I-95 in Teaneck, New Jersey. It is 2,900 miles long. It is also the interstate that most closely follows the route of the historic Lincoln Highway, the first road built across America. So the lane you are pricing is not a workaround. It is a road somebody set out to build.
From the Bay Area it is literally door to door
A San Francisco or Oakland pickup can join I-80 within a few miles and stay on it until the Hudson is in sight. That is about as simple as a 2,900-mile route gets.
From Southern California it bends south first
A Los Angeles or San Diego load usually takes I-40 or I-10 east, then turns north. It joins the same New Jersey corridor at the end. Shorter, and it misses the mountains.
Which is why the south is cheaper
Southern California is about 120 miles closer to Newark than San Jose is, and the Los Angeles basin is a busier outbound market. Both show up in the table.
The one winter variable
The I-80 climb over Donner Pass takes chain controls in a storm, November into March. A Bay Area pickup can gain a day. Southern California is unaffected, because the southern road is natural for it anyway.
I-80 ends four miles short of New York
Teaneck is in Bergen County, right at the top of the state. So a northern New Jersey delivery is often the last stop before the road simply runs out.
What that means for your quote
A single corridor means steadier pricing and fewer surprises than a route that hops between three highways. It is one of the reasons we are comfortable publishing figures on this lane at all.
How much does California to New Jersey car shipping cost?
Every row is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, reviewed October 2026. California is grouped by region because that is how the pricing actually works.

Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the biggest cost in hauling a car. It tracks the market, so we review the rows against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Where these figures come from. The California to New Jersey rows sit between two curves we already publish, so they are bracketed rather than guessed. Our California to Virginia page prices Southern California to Northern Virginia at $1,600 to $1,850 over about 2,700 miles. Our California to Massachusetts page prices Los Angeles to Boston at $1,850 to $2,150 over about 2,984 miles. New Jersey sits between the two on distance and on price, and the figures here land where both curves say they should. The return leg is lifted straight off our New York to California page.
Why we group California by region instead of listing cities. On this lane the city barely matters. What matters is which side of the state you are on, because that decides which road the truck takes and how far it runs. Listing twelve city pairs would suggest twelve different prices when there are really three answers.
How to read the two middle columns. The distance and the day range go together in order. The shortest trip in a row takes the fewest days. The longest takes the most. A loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day, so read the ends of each range as a pair.
California to New Jersey Car Shipping Questions
The questions California and New Jersey customers really ask, answered with this lane's own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car from California to New Jersey?
The cost to ship a car from California to New Jersey is typically $1,700 to $2,100 on an open trailer, and takes between 7 to 11 days in transit time. Southern California runs $1,700 to $1,950. Northern California runs $1,825 to $2,100.
Why is Northern California more than Southern California?
Distance, mostly. San Jose to Newark is about 140 miles further than Los Angeles to Newark. The Bay Area is also a quieter outbound market than the Los Angeles basin, so a truck takes a little longer to fill.
Is there one road that runs this whole lane?
There is, and it is unusual. Interstate 80 starts at US 101 in San Francisco and ends at I-95 in Teaneck, New Jersey. It is 2,900 miles long and it is the one interstate that most closely follows the historic Lincoln Highway.
Does my car actually travel on I-80 the whole way?
Often from Northern California, yes. From Southern California a carrier usually takes I-40 or I-10 east first, then turns north. Both roads end up on the same New Jersey corridor.
Does the Sierra crossing matter in winter?
It can, from November into March. The I-80 climb over Donner Pass takes chain controls in a storm. A Bay Area pickup can gain a day. Southern California is unaffected, because the southern road is natural for it anyway.
Is New Jersey cheaper to arrive in than to leave?
Yes, and you are on the cheaper side. New Jersey back to Southern California is $1,850 to $2,050 on our New York to California page. California to New Jersey is $1,700 to $1,950.
Why does the direction change the price?
More cars want to leave the New York and New Jersey metro than arrive in it. So a westbound truck fills faster than an eastbound one. A driver prices that in, and we pass the real figure on.
Does the price change depending on where in New Jersey I am?
No. New Jersey is about 170 miles end to end, so one price covers the state. Newark, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Iselin, Edison, Princeton, Trenton and Toms River all quote the same from a given California origin.
Do you have anyone in New Jersey?
Iselin is one of our six service areas. It sits in Middlesex County, in the middle of the state and right on the Metropark corridor, which makes it a practical reference point for almost any New Jersey delivery.
How long does California to New Jersey car shipping take?
From 7 to 11 days in transit. Southern California is 7 to 10 days. Northern California is 8 to 11. The days start when the car goes on the trailer.
When does the clock start?
When the car is loaded. Your pickup window comes first. That is 6 days as standard, or 3 days with expedited.
Why not faster? It is only 2,900 miles.
Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day. A nine-car trailer also has eight other pickups and drop-offs to fit in. A loaded carrier covers under 400 miles in a driving day.
Do you pick up at my house in California?
Yes, door to door. The driver comes to your address wherever the truck can legally and safely get in. If your street is tight, we agree a wide spot nearby at booking.
What about delivery in New Jersey?
Same, door to door. A lot of New Jersey streets are narrow and a lot of buildings have garage height limits, so tell us the address type when you book. We plan a nearby spot if the street will not take a 75-foot trailer.
Which California cities do you collect from?
All of them. Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Chula Vista and Gardena in the south. San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento, Berkeley and Palo Alto in the north.
What about the Central Valley?
Fresno, Bakersfield, Stockton, Modesto, Visalia and Merced we quote live rather than publish. The Valley is a thinner outbound market, so what you pay depends on how your dates fit a run a driver is already making.
Why quote the Central Valley live instead of publishing a figure?
Because a published band would be wrong often enough to be worse than useless. On a busy corridor the numbers hold steady. In a thinner market they move with the week, so we would rather give you the real one.
Is my car insured on the way?
Yes. Your car travels under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance. Cover starts when the car is loaded. It ends when the car is handed back in New Jersey.
Can I check the carrier before you load my car?
Yes. We give you the carrier's name and USDOT number. Look them up on the FMCSA SAFER system to see their active authority and insurance. Look us up under USDOT 2887232.
Who drives the truck?
A vetted carrier from our network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company. We arrange and manage the move end to end.
Do you own the trucks, or do carriers haul the car?
Carriers haul the car. We handle the price, the routing, the paperwork and the updates. You get one phone number for all 2,900 miles.
How do I know a carrier is safe?
Every carrier we assign holds active federal authority and current cargo insurance. We check both before the job goes out. You can check the same records yourself in a minute.
What is a Bill of Lading?
It is the condition report and the receipt in one. The driver walks the car with you in California and records how it looks. In New Jersey you compare, note anything, and sign.
What should I do before the driver arrives?
Wash it so the condition report is accurate. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Fold the mirrors and remove a toll tag. Take photos with a date on them.
Can I leave things in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it light. Keep it in the trunk or below the window line. Cargo insurance covers the vehicle rather than the contents, so valuables travel better with you.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes, as long as it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch. The extra starts at $200 and rises with the work involved.
What does enclosed transport cost on this lane?
About 80 percent more than open. On a coast to coast run that is a real step up, so it is worth being honest: most cars do not need it.
When is enclosed the right call?
A classic, a collector car, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything low to the ground. Also worth considering if the car is going to a show rather than a driveway.
How much faster is expedited?
Expedited narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same, because federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
Can you promise a delivery date?
We give you a window and keep you posted as the truck moves. On a 2,900-mile run weather and the other cars on the trailer both move the clock. A window we can hold beats a date we cannot.
How many cars are on the truck with mine?
Usually up to nine on an open trailer. The route is built around all of them, which is why the transit range on this page is a range.
Can I track my car?
Call or message us any time. We will tell you where it is and when it is due. You also have the driver's number once the car is loaded.
How far in advance should I book?
Two weeks is comfortable on a coast to coast lane. Book earlier for enclosed, earlier again for a summer move, and earlier still if you want a Bay Area pickup in January.
How long do I have to register in New Jersey?
Sixty days. The New Jersey MVC gives a new resident 60 days to transfer the out-of-state title and registration. That is double what many states allow.
Does New Jersey inspect the car?
There is less to it than in most states. New Jersey eliminated the mechanical defects portion of the inspection for passenger vehicles in August 2010, so the safety side is gone.
Is a newer car exempt?
A newly purchased or leased vehicle gets a one-time five-year inspection exemption decal from the New Jersey MVC. So a recent car may have nothing to do at all.
What do I need at the MVC appointment?
The out-of-state title, your registration, your license and your insurance information. Sorting the New Jersey policy before the car lands is the thing that makes the visit quick.
Is shipping cheaper than driving it across?
Almost always, on this lane. It is about 2,900 miles, which is four to five days of driving, plus fuel, plus four nights, plus the wear. And you still need to get yourself back if it is a one-way trip.
What if I am driving out anyway?
Then ship the second car and drive the first. That is the most common California to New Jersey booking we take. One driver, two vehicles, one trip.
Do you ship trucks and SUVs?
Yes. A mid-size SUV or crossover adds about $150. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV adds about $300. Those steps apply to every row in the table.
Do you ship motorcycles?
Yes. They usually travel on a dedicated bike carrier, or crated inside an enclosed trailer. Tell us the model and we will price it properly.
Do you ship classic cars from California to New Jersey?
Yes, and most go enclosed. Tell us the ground clearance, whether it runs, and whether it has a battery cut-off. A low car needs a lift gate or long ramps.
Do you handle dealer and auction moves on this lane?
Yes. California to New Jersey is an active dealer and auction corridor in both directions. Those jobs run on their own timelines and paperwork.
Do you ship cars people buy online?
Often. A car bought from a California seller and shipped to New Jersey is one of the steadiest jobs on this lane. We can collect from a private seller, a dealer or a storage lot.
What is the cheapest California origin for this lane?
Southern California, at $1,700 to $1,950. Los Angeles, Long Beach, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Irvine, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego all price in that band.
What is the most expensive?
Northern California, at $1,825 to $2,100. San Jose is the furthest point and sits at the top of that range.
How does this compare with California to Virginia?
Virginia is closer and cheaper. We publish Southern California to Northern Virginia at $1,600 to $1,850 over about 2,700 miles. New Jersey is roughly 80 miles further on.
How does it compare with California to Massachusetts?
Massachusetts is further and costs more. Los Angeles to Boston is about 2,984 miles at $1,850 to $2,150. New Jersey sits between Virginia and Massachusetts on both counts.
Do prices change with the season?
They move with demand and with fuel. Summer is the busiest stretch. January and February are quieter on this corridor, apart from the Sierra crossing.
Is there a best month to ship California to New Jersey?
Late spring and early fall. The weather is settled at both ends, the Sierra is clear, and the summer rush has not started or has finished.
Does weather at the New Jersey end matter?
Occasionally. A nor'easter in January or February can slow the last leg by a day. Carriers run the corridor all winter, they just take the final miles slower.
Does the price change if I am flexible on dates?
A wider window gives us more runs to fit you into, and on a coast to coast lane that matters more than on a short one. If your dates are fixed, tell us and we plan around them.
Is the quoted price the price I pay?
Yes. That is the Smart Price Promise. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same.
What would change the price after I book?
Only a change on your side. A different vehicle, a different address, a car that will not start, or a pickup outside the agreed window. Tell us early and we reprice it openly.
When do I pay?
You pay when the car is delivered in New Jersey, at the price you were quoted. We will set out the payment methods the carrier accepts before pickup.
What if something is damaged?
Note it on the Bill of Lading before you sign, and photograph it. Then call us. The claim goes to the carrier's cargo insurance and we help you through it.
Can somebody else hand over or receive the car?
Yes. Give us their name and number. They can sign the Bill of Lading at either end. Make sure they check the car properly before signing.
Is my car stored anywhere along the way?
No. It goes from your California address onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance until it is handed back in New Jersey. There is no terminal in between.
Do you ship to Alaska, Hawaii or Puerto Rico?
Not at present. Service covers the lower 48 states.
Do you have an office in California?
Yes. Los Angeles, at 5111 Harold Way Suite 301, on 213-766-0064. That is one of our four staffed offices and it covers the California end of this lane.
Where is Smart Auto Move based?
Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our four staffed offices are Lakewood WA, Los Angeles CA, Chicago IL and Kissimmee FL.
Are you licensed?
Yes. USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Smart Auto Move is BBB A+ accredited, and our BBB record is under our Raleigh address.
Do you move military vehicles on this lane?
Yes. California has a heavy military presence and so does the Northeast corridor. Read your orders first, since some vehicle moves are covered.
Do you ship cars for students?
Yes. Princeton, Rutgers and Stevens are all in New Jersey, and the California campuses send cars east every August. Late August and mid-May are the tight weeks.
How do I get a California to New Jersey quote?
Give us both ZIP codes. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first date, and open or enclosed. Use the form on this page or call 888-709-9078.
New Jersey is one price end to end, and that is unusual
On most destination pages we have to split the state. Here we do not need to.
New Jersey is about 170 miles from top to bottom. On a 2,900-mile run that is under six percent of the trip. So a Newark delivery and a Cape May delivery price the same from the same California origin, and we quote them the same. It is one of the simplest destination states in the country to price.
What that means in practice
You do not need to worry that Trenton or Toms River will cost more than Jersey City. It will not. Tell us the ZIP code for the routing and the price stays where the table puts it.
Iselin is our service area
Iselin sits in Middlesex County, in the middle of the state, right on the Metropark corridor. It is one of our six service areas and it is a practical reference point for almost any New Jersey delivery.
The streets are the real variable
Northern New Jersey has narrow streets and a lot of garage height limits. That affects where we load, not what you pay. Tell us the address type at booking and we plan it.
And the New York question
If your delivery is actually in the five boroughs or on Long Island, say so. Those are different pages and different figures, and we would rather send you to the right one.
You are on the cheaper side of this lane
Direction matters on a coast to coast run, and on this one it works in your favor.
$1,700 to $1,950 from Southern California. That is the direction you are going, and it is the cheaper one.
$1,850 to $2,050 for the same miles, published on our New York to California page. Northern California reaches $2,150 to $2,400.
Why the gap exists. More cars want to leave the New York and New Jersey metro than arrive in it. So a westbound truck fills faster than an eastbound one, and a driver prices that in. It is not a surcharge and nobody is being clever with you. It is simply which way the traffic runs.
What you can do with it. Not much, and that is the point: you are already on the right side. The one thing still in your control is the pickup window. A wider one gives us more trucks to choose from, which matters more on a 2,900-mile lane than on a short one.
An honest word about how far a carrier gets in a day
You will see 400 to 500 miles a day quoted around the auto transport industry. It is worth knowing where that figure comes from. It is not what a loaded car carrier does.
Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day. A nine-car trailer also has eight other pickups and drop-offs to fit in, and the route is built around all of them. A loaded carrier on a long run covers under 400 miles a day. Every transit range on this page is built on that, not on a best case.
Los Angeles to Newark is about 2,780 miles and we publish 7 to 10 days. A car with one driver could do it in four long days. A carrier working legally, with eight other vehicles aboard, takes seven to ten.
In September 2026 we ran that math across every route table on this site. We fixed our own rows where they were too fast. A transit figure is a promise, so we would rather fix ours in public.
New Jersey paperwork, and it is friendlier than most
This section is usually a list of hurdles. New Jersey keeps it short.
Sixty days to transfer
The New Jersey MVC gives a new resident 60 days to transfer the out-of-state title and registration. That is double what many states allow, so you have room to settle in first. More on New Jersey car shipping
The safety inspection is gone
New Jersey eliminated the mechanical defects portion of the inspection for passenger vehicles in August 2010. So there is less to pass here than in a state that still checks brakes, lights and tires.
A newer car may be exempt
A newly purchased or leased vehicle carries a one-time five-year inspection exemption decal from the MVC. If your car is recent, there may be nothing to do at all.
Bring the insurance information
The MVC wants the out-of-state title, the registration, your license and your insurance information at the appointment. Arranging the New Jersey policy before the car lands makes the visit quick.

Open, enclosed or expedited on this lane
Open transport
The basis for every figure in the table and the right choice for most cars, SUVs and pickups. It is what the factories use for brand new vehicles.
Enclosed transport
About 80 percent above open. On 2,900 miles that is a real step up, so it is worth saying plainly: most cars do not need it. A classic, an exotic or a fresh restoration does.
Expedited pickup
Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same, because federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.
A car that will not start
We can still move it if it rolls, steers and brakes. The carrier brings a winch. The extra starts at $200 and rises with the work involved.
Mid-size SUV or crossover
RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, Highlander, Rogue and similar. Add about $150 to the table figure.
Full-size pickup or three-row SUV
F-150, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Expedition and similar. Add about $300 to the table figure.
