Chicago, IL to Dallas, TX Car Shipping
Chicago to Dallas Car Shipping
Chicago to Dallas car shipping costs $800 to $950 for an operable sedan on an open trailer. Transit is 2 to 3 days once the car is collected, over about 925 miles. SUVs and pickups run higher. Enclosed adds about 80 percent. Prices come from our recent shipments, as of September 2026.
If you want to ship your car from Chicago to Dallas, this is the easiest Texas lane we run. Dallas is the closest major Texas metro to Chicago, the route is inland the whole way, and the DFW metroplex is about as friendly to a 75 foot truck as any delivery market in the country.
Chicago is one of our four staffed offices, on the South Side. North Texas is covered by our McKinney service area. That means someone local at both ends of a three day trip.
How much does Chicago to Dallas car shipping cost?
Between $800 and $950 for an operable sedan on an open trailer, as of September 2026. Bigger vehicles take more trailer space, so they price up from there.
| Vehicle | Open trailer | Enclosed trailer | Days on the truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sedan or compact | $800–$950 | $1,450–$1,700 | 2 to 3 |
| Mid-size SUV or crossover | $900–$1,050 | $1,600–$1,900 | 2 to 3 |
| Full-size pickup or three-row SUV | $1,000–$1,200 | $1,800–$2,150 | 2 to 3 |
| Vehicle that does not run | Add $200 or more | Quoted live | 2 to 4 |
Estimates for an operable vehicle unless stated, and fuel moves them. Enclosed figures are the open price plus the usual 80 percent premium. Lifted trucks, oversized tires and lowered suspension are quoted individually. On those, the right trailer matters more than the price.
Dallas is the cheapest Texas city to ship a car to from Chicago
It is the closest, at about 925 miles. Houston is roughly 160 miles further and prices about $100 above it. Austin and San Antonio are further again. If your move is flexible on which Texas metro you land in, Dallas is the one that costs least.
| From Chicago to | Distance | Sedan, open trailer | Days on the truck |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dallas / Fort Worth | ~925 miles | $800 to $950 | 2 to 3 |
| Houston | ~1,085 miles | $900 to $1,050 | 3 to 4 |
Full detail on the other lane is on the Chicago to Houston page.
There is a second reason Dallas is the easy one. It is inland, so it has no hurricane season. Houston can lose delivery days between August and October when a named storm closes evacuation routes. On this lane the only weather to plan around is a Chicago winter at the pickup end.
How long does Chicago to Dallas auto transport take?
Two to three days in transit once the car is collected. Pickup happens inside a window that starts on the date you ask for: six days on Standard, three on Expedited. A truck covers roughly 400 to 500 miles a day. Federal hours-of-service rules cap the time a driver can be behind the wheel.
The route
South on I-55 through St. Louis, southwest on I-44 through Springfield and Tulsa, then south into Dallas. Every stop on it is a market that generates freight, so drivers are not detouring to reach either end.
Winter at the Chicago end
December to March, and it is the streets rather than the highway. A 75 foot hauler will not attempt an unplowed residential block, and Chicago snow routes move parking. The run south clears quickly once the truck is out of the metro.
Busiest stretch
May through August, when the summer moving peak and college move-in land together. February through April is quietest and usually the best price. September is the calmest month of the second half.
Your car never sits anywhere. It goes from your address straight onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance for the entire trip. There is no terminal and no holding lot at either end, so nothing is parked or transferred partway down.
Open, enclosed or expedited
Open for anything you drive daily. Plan on about 80 percent more for enclosed. An $875 open move is roughly $1,575 enclosed.
Open transport
Every open price on this page assumes one. A seven to ten car trailer, the same kind that delivers new cars to dealerships. Around eight in ten vehicles move this way, and it is the easiest to schedule on a corridor this busy.
Enclosed transport
Hard sided, two to six vehicles. Worth the premium for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or anything under about five inches of ground clearance. Also worth a thought in a Chicago winter, because the first hundred miles run through road salt.
Expedited
Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3. Useful when a closing or a start date is fixed. Transit stays at 2 to 3 days either way, because federal driving-hour rules set that.
More on each: standard door to door, enclosed, expedited, and a side by side open and enclosed comparison.
Chicago pickup and DFW delivery
Door to door at both ends, wherever a truck can legally and safely reach. A car hauler is about 75 feet long. Chicago is the end worth flagging.
Collecting in Chicago
The Loop, River North, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Hyde Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square, the South Side and the O'Hare area. Also Evanston, Skokie, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora and Joliet.
- Permit-parking blocks on the North Side are the usual pinch point
- Alley loading is rarely possible for a full-size hauler
- Winter snow routes can move an agreed meeting spot
- A retail lot on a main road takes ten minutes and costs nothing extra
Delivering across DFW
Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving, Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Prosper, Garland, Richardson, Carrollton, Denton, Grapevine and Rockwall.
- Most DFW suburbs are wide and easy for a full-size hauler
- Gated communities in Plano and Frisco may need a guard cleared first
- Uptown and Deep Ellum have nowhere legal to stop a 75 foot trailer
- Name the community when you book and the driver plans around it
DFW was built around wide roads and big lots, so delivery access is rarely the problem here. Chicago is where a heads up about your street actually saves the day, particularly between December and March.
Who is working your shipment?
Chicago is a staffed office. North Texas is a service area. Both are real, and they work differently.

Our North Texas team delivers across McKinney, Frisco, Plano, Allen, Prosper, Denton, Carrollton, Richardson, Garland and Rockwall, plus Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving and Grapevine.
No street address here, and that is deliberate rather than a gap. A service area is a delivery territory, not a building, and the Google listing is set up the same way. Nothing is stored and nothing is transferred.

How Chicago to Dallas vehicle shipping works
Four steps. The pickup window is the one worth thinking about. A wider window finds you a truck sooner, and usually at a better price.
Price the vehicle
Both addresses, the year, make and model, and whether it runs and drives. Give the earliest day you can release it, and name the DFW suburb rather than just Dallas.
Book your spot
Open or enclosed. Standard with its six day window, or Expedited with three. A deposit holds the booking, and the Smart Price Promise holds the figure.
Collection in Chicago
The driver calls ahead. You walk the car together and the condition goes on the Bill of Lading. Take your own photos of all four corners too.
Delivery in DFW
Check the car against the same record, in daylight where you can. Pay the balance to the driver and take the keys.
Getting the car ready
- Wash it so the inspection photos are clear
- Leave about a quarter tank of gas
- Take out the I-PASS and anything loose in the cabin
- Fold the mirrors and turn off the alarm
- Note any dents you already have
- Hand over one key

Can I leave personal items in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.
Comparing Chicago to Dallas auto transport companies
Every company moving cars across state lines has a USDOT number and an MC number. Both are public. Ours are USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Pull our record on the FMCSA SAFER system in about thirty seconds. If a company will not hand those over, that is your answer.
The number one red flag
A quote far below everyone else. This is already one of the cheaper long lanes, so a figure well under $800 should make you ask whether the rate is confirmed. If they say yes, go read their reviews looking for the words bait and switch. Loading, securing, the condition report and the slot on the trailer cost a driver about the same at any distance. There is a floor below which the route cannot be run.
The one people get backwards
Plenty of advice says a good company never asks for money up front. The opposite is closer to the truth. A company taking nothing up front is often not confident it can find a carrier at the price it quoted. Those are frequently the same companies that call back a week later saying drivers turned the load down and the rate has gone up. A deposit means we are booking committed customers and holding the price we gave you.

Chicago to Dallas car shipping questions
How much does Chicago to Dallas car shipping cost?
$800 to $950 for an operable sedan on an open trailer, based on our recent shipments as of September 2026. A mid-size SUV runs $900 to $1,050 and a full-size pickup $1,000 to $1,200. Enclosed transport adds about 80 percent.
How long does Chicago to Dallas auto transport take?
Two to three days in transit once the car is collected, over about 925 miles. A truck covers roughly 400 to 500 miles a day once loading and delivery stops are counted. It is one of the quickest long lanes we run, because the distance is short for a cross-region move and the route is busy the whole way.
When will the truck pick up my car in Chicago?
Pickup happens inside a window that starts on the date you ask for. Standard shipping uses a 6 day window and Expedited narrows it to 3 days. Your driver calls you directly as the truck gets close, so you get the day and a rough time rather than waiting all week.
Is Dallas cheaper than Houston from Chicago?
Yes, by around $100 on a sedan. Dallas is about 925 miles from Chicago and Houston about 1,085, so Dallas is the closest major Texas metro and the cheapest to reach. Dallas is also inland, which means no hurricane season to plan around at the delivery end.
What is the best month to ship your car from Chicago to Dallas?
February through April. Those are the quietest months, so there is more trailer space than freight to fill it. The only weather to plan around on this lane is a Chicago winter at the pickup end, from December to March, and that affects street access rather than the highway. May through August is the busiest and priciest stretch.
Should I ship open or enclosed to Dallas?
Open for anything you drive daily. Plan on about 80 percent more for enclosed, so an $875 open move is roughly $1,575 enclosed. An open trailer holds seven to ten cars where an enclosed one holds two to six, so each car carries more of the cost. Enclosed is worth a thought in a Chicago winter, because the first hundred miles run through road salt.
Is my car insured on the way to Dallas?
Yes. Your vehicle travels under Carrier Cargo Insurance from the moment it loads in Chicago until it comes off in DFW. The coverage belongs to the motor carrier rather than to Smart Auto Move, and we confirm the authority and coverage are active before a car is assigned. Once a carrier is assigned, ask us for the certificate of insurance and we will send it.
Do you have an office in Dallas?
North Texas is a service area rather than a staffed office, so there is no street address and nowhere to visit. That is how the Google listing is configured too. In practice it means a team covering the whole metroplex from McKinney for the delivery end. The Chicago end is handled from our staffed South Side office, and both run on Central time.
Which DFW suburbs do you deliver to?
All of them. Our North Texas team covers McKinney, Frisco, Plano, Allen, Prosper, Denton, Carrollton, Richardson, Garland and Rockwall, along with Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving and Grapevine. Name the suburb when you book rather than just Dallas, because it decides which day of a driver's Texas run you fall on.
Which Chicago areas do you collect from?
The whole metro. The Loop, River North, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Hyde Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square, the South Side and the O'Hare area, plus Evanston, Skokie, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora and Joliet. Chicago is one of our four staffed offices, so collection here is handled by people in the city.
Can the truck reach my street in Chicago?
Usually. The pinch points are permit-parking blocks on the North Side, alleys, and narrow streets in winter when snow routes are active. A car hauler is about 75 feet long. Tell us the address when you book. If it is tight, a retail lot on a main road a few minutes away is used instead, at no extra charge.
Can you ship a car that does not run?
Yes, as long as it rolls, brakes and steers, and the trailer carries a winch. There is no flat fee. Expect about $200 or more above the price of the same car running, and the exact figure is worth a short conversation. Book it as inoperable up front, because a car re-rated at the curb costs more and can lose the pickup slot.
How do I pay, and can I cancel?
A deposit is due when you book and the balance is paid to the driver at delivery, usually by cashier's check, money order or cash. You can also put the whole amount on a credit card at booking. Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. After that it carries over to a later shipment instead.
How do I know a car shipping company is legitimate?
Check the USDOT and MC numbers on the FMCSA SAFER system, which takes about thirty seconds and is free. Ours are USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Then read reviews on public profiles rather than testimonials on a website, check the BBB complaint history, and treat a quote far below everyone else as the warning it usually is.
