Chicago to New York City Car Shipping

Rates updated September 2026

Chicago to New York City car shipping costs $800 to $950 for an operable sedan on an open trailer. Transit is 2 to 3 days once the car is collected, over about 790 miles. SUVs and pickups run higher. Enclosed adds about 80 percent. Prices come from our recent shipments, as of September 2026.

If you want to ship your car from Chicago to New York City, the drive is the easy part. It is a short run on a busy corridor and the truck is there in two or three days. What takes planning is the last mile, because New York is the hardest delivery market in the country for a 75 foot trailer.

Chicago is one of our four staffed offices. New York is covered by our Bronx and Huntington Station service areas, so there is a team on Eastern time handling the end that actually needs handling.

Why a shorter run costs about the same as Chicago to Dallas

New York is 790 miles from Chicago. Dallas is 925. Both price around $800 to $950 for a sedan, which looks wrong until you think about the last mile. Distance is not the only thing a driver is paid for. Getting a 75 foot trailer into the New York metro, finding somewhere legal to unload, and getting back out again eats hours that a Dallas suburb does not. That access cost is what closes the gap.

The part that needs planning

Where can a car hauler actually deliver in New York City?

Almost never to a Manhattan address, and often not to a Brooklyn or Queens block either. A car hauler is about 75 feet long and 13 and a half feet tall. Much of the city has nowhere legal for one to stop, and several parkways ban commercial vehicles outright.

Usually straightforward

Staten Island, outer Queens, the north Bronx, Westchester, most of Long Island, and northern New Jersey. Wide streets, driveways and parking lots. These are ordinary door to door deliveries.

Usually a meeting point

Manhattan, brownstone Brooklyn, dense Queens and anywhere with alternate side parking. The driver picks a lot in the outer boroughs or just over in New Jersey, and you meet there.

What it costs you

Nothing extra. A meeting point is a normal part of door to door service on this lane. What it costs is twenty minutes and a short trip, which is a far better outcome than a truck circling your block.

The one thing that turns this from routine into a bad afternoon is not mentioning it. Give us the actual delivery address when you book, and the meeting point is arranged in advance rather than negotiated with a driver who is blocking traffic.

Timing

How long does Chicago to New York City auto transport take?

Two to three days in transit once the car is collected. Pickup happens inside a window that starts on the date you ask for: six days on Standard, three on Expedited. A truck covers roughly 400 to 500 miles a day. Federal hours-of-service rules cap the time a driver can be behind the wheel.

The route

East on I-80 across Indiana and Ohio, through Pennsylvania, then into northern New Jersey and across into the city. It is one of the busiest freight corridors in the country and drivers run it constantly.

Winter

December to March. Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie near Cleveland and Erie is the usual delay, along with the Pennsylvania stretch of I-80. Add a day in a bad week.

Busiest stretch

May through August, with a spike around college move-in given how many schools sit in the metro. February through April is quietest and usually the best price.

Your car never sits anywhere. It goes from your address straight onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance for the entire trip. There is no terminal and no holding lot at either end, so nothing is parked or transferred partway across.

Transport type

Open, enclosed or expedited

Open for anything you drive daily. Plan on about 80 percent more for enclosed. An $875 open move is roughly $1,575 enclosed.

Open transport

Every open price on this page assumes one. A seven to ten car trailer, the same kind that delivers new cars to dealerships. Around eight in ten vehicles move this way, and it is the easiest to schedule on a corridor this busy.

Enclosed transport

Hard sided, two to six vehicles. Worth the premium for a classic, an exotic, fresh paint, or anything under about five inches of ground clearance. Enclosed trailers are also shorter, which occasionally helps at the New York end.

Expedited

Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3. Useful when a lease start or a closing is fixed. Transit stays at 2 to 3 days either way, because federal driving-hour rules set that.

More on each: standard door to door, enclosed, expedited, and a side by side open and enclosed comparison.

Both ends of the route

Chicago pickup and New York delivery

Door to door at both ends, wherever a truck can legally and safely reach. Chicago is usually simple. New York is the end that wants a conversation.

Collecting in Chicago

The Loop, River North, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Hyde Park, Wicker Park, Logan Square, the South Side and the O'Hare area. Also Evanston, Skokie, Oak Park, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora and Joliet.

  • Permit-parking blocks on the North Side are the usual pinch point
  • Alley loading is rarely possible for a full-size hauler
  • Winter snow routes can move an agreed meeting spot
  • A retail lot on a main road takes ten minutes and costs nothing extra

Delivering across the New York metro

Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island, plus Nassau and Suffolk on Long Island, Westchester, and northern New Jersey including Hudson County.

  • Manhattan almost always means a meeting point
  • Parkways ban commercial vehicles, so routing is limited
  • Alternate side parking decides where a truck can stop
  • Long Island and Westchester are usually straightforward

Hudson County is worth naming separately. Jersey City, Hoboken, Bayonne and their neighbors price above the New Jersey standard because access there is closer to Brooklyn than to suburban New Jersey. If your delivery is in that band, say so when you book and the quote is right the first time.

People on this lane

Who is working your shipment?

Chicago is a staffed office. New York is covered by two service areas. Both are real, and they work differently.

Chicago, Illinois

742 E 87th Pl, Chicago, IL 60619
Local line 312-300-7773
Monday to Thursday 8:00 to 20:00, Friday 8:00 to 18:00, Saturday 10:00 to 15:00. Central time.

There is a street address because there is a room with dispatchers in it. It is not somewhere you drop a car off, and visits are by appointment.

View Chicago on Google Maps

Bronx and Huntington Station, New York

Two service areas between them cover the five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and northern New Jersey.

Neither has a street address, and that is deliberate rather than a gap. A service area is a delivery territory, not a building, and both Google listings are set up the same way. Nothing is stored and nothing is transferred.

Reach either end on 888-709-9078. Central hours when the car is collected, Eastern hours when it arrives.

Process

How Chicago to New York City vehicle shipping works

Four steps. On this lane the delivery address matters more than the pickup window, which is unusual.

Price the vehicle

Both addresses, the year, make and model, and whether it runs and drives. Give the actual New York street, not just the borough, because that is what decides whether a truck can reach it.

Book your spot

Open or enclosed. Standard with its six day window, or Expedited with three. A deposit holds the booking, and the Smart Price Promise holds the figure.

Collection in Chicago

The driver calls ahead. You walk the car together and the condition goes on the Bill of Lading. Take your own photos of all four corners too.

Delivery in New York

Either at your address or at the meeting point agreed when you booked. Check the car against the same record, pay the balance and take the keys.

Getting the car ready

  • Wash it so the inspection photos are clear
  • Leave about a quarter tank of gas
  • Take out the I-PASS and anything loose in the cabin
  • Fold the mirrors and turn off the alarm
  • Note any dents you already have
  • Hand over one key

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Most drivers will take a few things as a courtesy. Keep it under about 100 pounds, pack it neatly, and keep it out of sight from outside the car. Think a few boxes in the trunk rather than a carload. The one thing to know is that you are paying to move the vehicle, so the carrier's insurance covers the car itself. Keep anything you would hate to lose with you.

Choosing a company

Comparing Chicago to New York City auto transport companies

Every company moving cars across state lines has a USDOT number and an MC number. Both are public. Ours are USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Pull our record on the FMCSA SAFER system in about thirty seconds. If a company will not hand those over, that is your answer.

The question to ask on this lane

Ask what happens if a truck cannot reach the delivery address. A company that says door to door on a Manhattan block without qualifying it either has not thought about it or is hoping you will not notice until the day. The right answer is a meeting point, arranged in advance, at no extra charge.

The one people get backwards

Plenty of advice says a good company never asks for money up front. The opposite is closer to the truth. A company taking nothing up front is often not confident it can find a carrier at the price it quoted. Those are frequently the same companies that call back a week later saying drivers turned the load down and the rate has gone up. A deposit means we are booking committed customers and holding the price we gave you.

Questions

Chicago to New York City car shipping questions

How much does Chicago to New York City car shipping cost?

$800 to $950 for an operable sedan on an open trailer, based on our recent shipments as of September 2026. A mid-size SUV runs $900 to $1,050 and a full-size pickup $1,000 to $1,200. Enclosed transport adds about 80 percent.

How long does Chicago to New York City auto transport take?

Two to three days in transit once the car is collected, over about 790 miles on I-80. A truck covers roughly 400 to 500 miles a day once loading and delivery stops are counted. Add a day between December and March, when lake-effect snow near Cleveland and Erie slows the corridor.

Can a car hauler deliver to my address in Manhattan?

Almost certainly not, and no honest company will tell you otherwise. A car hauler is about 75 feet long and 13 and a half feet tall, and Manhattan has nowhere legal for one to stop. The driver arranges a meeting point in the outer boroughs or just over in New Jersey, and you meet there. There is no extra charge for it.

Is there an extra charge for meeting at a nearby lot?

No. On this lane a meeting point is a normal part of door to door service rather than an exception. It costs you about twenty minutes and a short trip. The only thing that causes trouble is nobody mentioning the address until the truck is already on the block.

Which New York areas can you deliver to directly?

Staten Island, outer Queens, the north Bronx, Westchester, most of Long Island and northern New Jersey are usually straightforward for a full-size hauler. Manhattan, brownstone Brooklyn and dense Queens usually need a meeting point. Give the actual street when you book and we will tell you which you are.

Why does this cost about the same as Chicago to Dallas when it is shorter?

Because distance is not the only thing a driver is paid for. New York is 790 miles from Chicago and Dallas is 925, but getting a 75 foot trailer into the New York metro, finding somewhere legal to unload and getting back out takes hours that a Dallas suburb does not. That access cost closes the gap.

When will the truck pick up my car in Chicago?

Pickup happens inside a window that starts on the date you ask for. Standard shipping uses a 6 day window and Expedited narrows it to 3 days. Your driver calls you directly as the truck gets close, so you get the day and a rough time rather than waiting all week.

Should I ship open or enclosed to New York?

Open for anything you drive daily. Plan on about 80 percent more for enclosed, so an $875 open move is roughly $1,575 enclosed. An open trailer holds seven to ten cars where an enclosed one holds two to six, so each car carries more of the cost. Enclosed trailers are also shorter, which occasionally helps at the New York end.

Is my car insured on the way to New York?

Yes. Your vehicle travels under Carrier Cargo Insurance from the moment it loads in Chicago until it comes off in New York. The coverage belongs to the motor carrier rather than to Smart Auto Move, and we confirm the authority and coverage are active before a car is assigned. Once a carrier is assigned, ask us for the certificate of insurance and we will send it.

Do you have an office in New York City?

New York is covered by two service areas rather than a staffed office, one in the Bronx and one at Huntington Station on Long Island. Neither has a street address, and that is how the Google listings are configured. In practice it means a team on Eastern time handling the delivery end. The Chicago end is handled from our staffed South Side office.

Do you deliver to Jersey City and Hoboken?

Yes, and it is worth naming when you book. Hudson County prices above the New Jersey standard because access there is closer to Brooklyn than to suburban New Jersey. Saying Jersey City rather than just New Jersey gets you the right number the first time instead of a revision later.

Can the truck reach my street in Chicago?

Usually. The pinch points are permit-parking blocks on the North Side, alleys, and narrow streets in winter when snow routes are active. A car hauler is about 75 feet long. Tell us the address when you book. If it is tight, a retail lot on a main road a few minutes away is used instead, at no extra charge.

Can you ship a car that does not run?

Yes, as long as it rolls, brakes and steers, and the trailer carries a winch. There is no flat fee. Expect about $200 or more above the price of the same car running, and the exact figure is worth a short conversation. Book it as inoperable up front, because a car re-rated at the curb costs more and can lose the pickup slot.

How do I pay, and can I cancel?

A deposit is due when you book and the balance is paid to the driver at delivery, usually by cashier's check, money order or cash. You can also put the whole amount on a credit card at booking. Cancel any time before we assign a carrier and your deposit comes back to you. After that it carries over to a later shipment instead.
