Eugene Oregon Car Shipping
Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move · USDOT 2887232 · MC 969368
The cost to ship a car to or from Eugene, Oregon is typically $450 to $2,050 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 10 days in transit time. Eugene to Portland starts at $450 to $600 over about 110 miles, and Orlando reaches $1,900 to $2,050 over about 3,120. Eugene sits right on Interstate 5, which makes the north and south lanes unusually easy, and Lane County has no emissions test.
Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. | Any route of 500 to 1,500 miles NATIONAL BAND | Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Denver | 500 to 1,500 miles | 2 to 5 days | $900 to $1,600 |
Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the single largest cost in hauling a car and it tracks the market, so the rows get reviewed against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.
Springfield, Junction City, Creswell, Cottage Grove, Veneta, Coburg, Albany and Corvallis all price with Eugene, and so do Roseburg and Salem. Florence and the rest of the coast are quoted live rather than priced from the table, since the road out is winding and a driver may route hours off his line.
Eugene is on one road, and that road is the whole story
Everything about pricing here follows from a single piece of geography, and it is worth two minutes.
Interstate 5 runs straight through the middle of Eugene. It is the busiest road on the West Coast, carrying freight from Canada to Mexico, and Eugene sits on it between Portland 110 miles north and the whole of California to the south. A truck heading either way passes the door.
There is no east-west interstate at Eugene. Oregon's is Interstate 84, and it starts up at Portland. Head east from here and the choices are the two-lane roads over the Cascades, or a detour to a corridor.
Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego are all one road away. We can usually catch a truck already running past, which is why those rows sit at the bottom of their bands and fill quickly.
For Denver, Chicago or the East Coast the driver first goes 110 miles north to Portland for I-84, or south to Sacramento for I-80. That is why an eastbound quote is worth booking with a wider window.
You can see it in the table, and it looks odd until you know why. Eugene to Denver is about 1,230 miles at $1,150 to $1,350. Eugene to Los Angeles is about 885 miles at $900 to $1,150. Denver is 345 miles further but the gap is bigger than that suggests, because the Los Angeles run is a straight shot and the Denver run starts with a detour.
The practical use is simple. If your car is going anywhere on the West Coast, Eugene is one of the easier places in the country to ship from. If it is going east, give us a few more days of flexibility and we will find a driver who is already building that route.
Eugene Car Shipping Questions
The questions Eugene customers really ask, answered with this city's own numbers.
How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Eugene, Oregon?
$450 to $2,050 for an operable mid-size car on an open trailer, and distance does most of the work. Eugene to Portland is $450 to $600. Los Angeles is $900 to $1,150. Chicago is $1,300 to $1,500, and New York, the longest lane we publish here, is $1,875 to $2,025.
How long does Eugene car shipping take?
From 1 day up Interstate 5 to 10 days coast to coast. Portland is 1 day, Seattle is 1 to 2, Sacramento or the Bay Area is 2 to 3, Los Angeles is 3 to 4, Chicago is 6 to 7 and New York is 8 to 10. Road days start when your pickup window closes.
Is Eugene cheaper to ship from than Portland or Seattle?
On the California lanes, yes on time and a little on price. Eugene sits 110 miles south of Portland and 255 south of Seattle, so every run to California starts that much closer. Eugene to Los Angeles is about 885 miles against 1,140 from Seattle.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Portland?
$450 to $600 over about 110 miles in a single day. Beaverton, Hillsboro, Gresham and Vancouver, Washington all price the same. It is the shortest lane on this page.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Seattle?
$500 to $700 over about 285 miles in 1 to 2 days. Tacoma, Bellevue, Everett and Olympia come in at the same figure, and our Lakewood office coordinates the Puget Sound end.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Los Angeles?
$900 to $1,150 over about 885 miles in 3 to 4 days. That covers the whole basin, Orange County and the Inland Empire. It is the best value on this page for the distance, because Interstate 5 runs the entire way.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to San Francisco?
$900 to $1,125 to the Bay Area over about 640 miles in 2 to 3 days. Oakland, San Jose, Berkeley and Palo Alto price the same.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Sacramento?
$900 to $1,100 over about 525 miles in 2 to 3 days. Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove and Stockton come in at the same figure.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to San Diego?
$950 to $1,200 over about 995 miles in 3 to 4 days. Chula Vista, Carlsbad and Oceanside price the same.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Boise?
$700 to $900 over about 500 miles in 2 to 3 days. Meridian, Nampa and Caldwell come in at the same figure. It is the same distance as Tacoma to Boise and the same price.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Denver?
$1,150 to $1,350 over about 1,230 miles in 3 to 5 days. Aurora, Boulder and Colorado Springs price the same.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Chicago?
$1,300 to $1,500 over about 2,190 miles in 6 to 7 days. Naperville, Aurora and the rest of Chicagoland come in at the same figure.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to New York?
$1,875 to $2,025 over about 2,940 miles in 8 to 10 days. All five boroughs, Long Island and northern New Jersey price the same.
What does it cost to ship a car from Eugene to Florida?
$1,900 to $2,050 to Orlando over about 3,120 miles in 8 to 10 days. It is the longest lane on this page, and our Kissimmee office coordinates the Central Florida end.
Do prices work the same in both directions?
Yes on every lane on this page. Interstate 5 carries plenty of freight both ways all year, so neither direction carries an empty-miles premium. Tell us which way the car is going and the range holds.
Why are the north and south lanes from Eugene so easy?
Because Interstate 5 runs straight through the middle of town. Eugene sits on the busiest road on the West Coast, between Portland to the north and Sacramento and the whole of California to the south. A truck heading either way passes the door.
Why does Eugene to Denver cost more than Eugene to Los Angeles?
Because of the road rather than the miles, and it is worth understanding. Los Angeles is a straight run down one interstate. Denver is 345 miles further on paper, but there is no east-west interstate at Eugene, so the truck first drives 110 miles north to Portland for Interstate 84, or south to Sacramento for Interstate 80.
So Eugene has no east-west interstate?
Correct, and it is the one thing that shapes pricing here. Oregon's east-west interstate is Interstate 84, and it starts at Portland. Going east from Eugene the choices are the two-lane routes over the Cascades or a detour to a corridor. North and south are effortless; east takes planning.
Does that mean eastbound quotes take longer to fill?
Sometimes, and a wider pickup window is the fix. On the California and Puget Sound lanes we can usually catch a truck already running past. On an eastbound lane the driver is building a route, so a few extra days of flexibility makes a real difference to both timing and price.
Does Eugene require an emissions test?
No, and that is genuinely good news. Oregon DEQ tests most vehicles in the Portland and Medford metro areas only. Eugene and the rest of Lane County are outside both, so there is no test to book and nothing to pay for.
What if I am moving to Portland instead?
Then the test applies. Portland is one of the two DEQ areas, so plan on an emissions test there. Vehicles in their first four model years are treated differently, and motorcycles, trailers and heavy diesels over 8,500 pounds are handled separately.
How long do I have to title the car in Oregon?
Oregon publishes one clock and it is generous. You have 30 days from the date of sale to submit the title application, and after that the late fee is modest: $25 between 31 and 60 days, and $50 after 60. So there is no scramble the week the car lands.
Is there a separate deadline for new residents?
Oregon does not publish a day count for moving in the way Florida and Texas do. What it publishes is that to register a vehicle you must be a resident of, or domiciled in, the state. So the practical plan is to sort the registration in the first few weeks and not worry about a hard date.
I bought a car out of state and I am shipping it to Eugene. Is there a tax?
There may be, and this is the one clock worth watching. Oregon charges a vehicle use tax of one half of one percent on the retail price of a vehicle bought from a dealer outside Oregon that has to be titled here. It is due within 30 days of purchase.
Why does that 30 days matter more than the others?
Because it runs from the date of purchase rather than the date of delivery. If the car spends a week on a truck, that week is part of the 30 days. Buy on a Monday and ship the same week and you will still have three weeks in hand.
Does the use tax apply to a private sale?
The tax as written covers vehicles purchased from dealers outside Oregon. A private-party purchase is a different case, so check with the Oregon Department of Revenue for your own situation rather than assuming either way.
Is Eugene a good place to buy a car and ship it home?
A lot of our customers think so, and the numbers help. Oregon has no general sales tax, and the state's vehicle privilege tax carries an exemption for vehicle sales to buyers who are not Oregon residents. Plenty of the cars we load in Eugene are heading to a buyer in another state.
Do you have an office in Oregon?
Not a staffed one, and Eugene moves run smoothly without it. Our nearest staffed office is in Lakewood, Washington, at 5607 Boston Ave SW, and the direct line is 253-200-5645. It coordinates the Pacific Northwest, and Eugene is 255 miles down Interstate 5 from it.
What is included in the price you quote?
Door to door pickup and delivery, one carrier for the whole distance, the driver's Carrier Cargo Insurance, a written condition report at both ends, and the driver's direct number. No fuel surcharge and no fees added later.
Will my price change after I book?
No. That is our Smart Price Promise: the price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. If something material changes we reprice openly and tell you why.
How much more is enclosed transport?
Budget about 80 percent above the open figure. So Eugene to Los Angeles runs roughly $1,625 to $2,075 enclosed. It is the right call for a collector car, an exotic, a low car or fresh paint.
Is enclosed worth it from Eugene?
For most cars heading south, no, and we would rather say so. The run down Interstate 5 to California crosses no salted road and climbs nothing worse than the Siskiyou Summit. Where enclosed earns its money is a winter run east, since Interstate 84 and the routes beyond it are salted heavily.
What about all that Oregon rain?
It does nothing to a car on an open trailer that driving in it would not do. The Willamette Valley is wet from November to April and the cars we load in it arrive fine. If the paint is the point, enclosed is the answer, but rain alone is not a reason to upgrade.
Does winter affect shipping from Eugene?
Barely on the north-south lanes. Interstate 5 stays open through the valley all year and the only real climb is the Siskiyou Summit at the California line, which takes occasional snow. Eastbound over the Cascades or through the Blue Mountains is the part that carries a winter allowance.
When is the busiest time to ship a car to Eugene?
Late August and early September, with the University of Oregon intake, and then again in June as students head home. Summer is the general moving season on the long lanes. October and February are the easiest months to get the pickup window you want.
Do you handle student car shipping to the University of Oregon?
Often, and it is one of our busier reasons for this route. Book two to three weeks before term and the timing is comfortable. If the car is going to a dorm or a student apartment, tell us and the driver picks a nearby lot rather than a crowded street.
Can you ship a car that will not start?
Yes. A non-running car loads on a winch, which adds $200 or more to the running price. Tell us at quote time and the right truck is assigned from the start.
What is your pickup window?
6 days standard, counted from the first date you give us. Expedited narrows it to 3 days. Both windows open on your earliest available date rather than the day you book.
Is expedited worth it from Eugene?
On the short lanes, very much so. Eugene to Portland is a one-day drive, so the collection window is nearly your whole timeline and cutting it from 6 days to 3 changes the plan. On the New York run it matters less.
Do I need to be there for pickup and delivery?
Someone does, and it can be anyone you name. That person walks the car with the driver, signs the condition report and keeps a copy. At the far end the same report is used to check the car before signing for it.
Can I leave belongings in the car?
Usually yes, within reason. Keep it to personal effects in the trunk or back seat, under about 100 pounds, below the window line and clear of the driver's way. Tell us what is in there so the weight is accounted for, and leave out anything valuable or irreplaceable.
How do I prepare the car?
Wash it so the condition report is accurate, photograph it from every angle, leave about a quarter tank of fuel, turn off the alarm and fold the mirrors. Check the tire pressures, since the car rolls on and off under its own weight.
Can the truck reach my street in Eugene?
Usually, and where it cannot we plan around it. Eugene has plenty of wide arterials and large lots, and Interstate 105 runs right into the middle of town. The older streets in the Whiteaker, Friendly and University districts are narrow with heavy tree cover, so the driver picks a lot nearby at no extra cost.
What about Springfield and the smaller valley towns?
All served at the Eugene price. Springfield, Junction City, Creswell, Cottage Grove, Veneta, Coburg, Albany and Corvallis price with Eugene, and so do Roseburg to the south and Salem to the north.
Do you serve the Oregon coast?
Yes, and Florence is the usual one from here, about 60 miles west on Highway 126. Coastal addresses are quoted live rather than priced from the table, because the road out is winding and a driver may route several hours off his line.
Can you ship two cars together?
Yes, and it is usually the better value. Two cars to the same address share the trip and we quote the pair together rather than doubling one price. For a household moving with two vehicles and one driver it is normally the cheapest way.
Do you ship trucks, SUVs and EVs?
Yes to all three. A full-size pickup or large SUV takes more deck space and adds roughly $100 to $250 depending on distance. Electric vehicles ride on the same open trailers, and the Willamette Valley is one of our busier EV markets.
Do you ship motorcycles?
Yes, secured on their own cradles. Send the make and model and we will quote it with the right equipment.
Do you offer a military discount?
Yes. There is no large active-duty base at Eugene, but Joint Base Lewis-McChord sits 255 miles north beside our Lakewood office and Kingsley Field is in Klamath Falls. We handle gate handovers and orders-based timing as routine.
Can you work to a PCS report date?
Yes, and it is the right way to plan it. Give us the report date rather than a pickup date and we work backward from it, allowing for the road days plus the collection window. If the orders move, tell us and we reschedule.
Do you handle dealer and auction pickups?
Yes. Give us the dealer or auction contact, the lot details and the release information and we deal with them directly. You do not need to be there, and we confirm the condition report with you either way.
Who actually moves my car?
One vetted carrier from our network of more than 16,000, for the whole distance. Active FMCSA authority and a live insurance filing come first, and nothing moves without both. After that we look at the trailer and how recent deliveries went.
What insurance covers my car in transit?
The carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the vehicle from pickup to delivery. Ask and we will send you the certificate before the truck arrives.
Where can I check your licensing?
Smart Auto Move Inc holds USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368, and the record is public on the FMCSA SAFER system. We are also BBB accredited with an A plus rating going back to 2016.
Are these prices fixed?
They are honest estimates, reviewed against the market. Fuel is the largest single cost in hauling a car and it moves, so these rows get reviewed against it. The live number for your car and your dates comes from the quote form or a phone call.
Do you sell my information?
No. Information you share with Smart Auto Move for the purpose of receiving a quote is used for that purpose only. We do not sell your information and we do not chase you with outbound sales calls. You are welcome to call us whenever you like.
How do I get a firm Eugene price?
Send the Eugene address with its ZIP, the other end of the trip, the year, make and model, whether the car runs, and your earliest available date. That is everything we need to give you a number you can book on.
Eugene is the closest big Oregon city to California
This is a small advantage that adds up, and almost nobody thinks about it before they book.
Every California lane out of Eugene starts 110 miles ahead of Portland and 255 miles ahead of Seattle. Eugene to Los Angeles is about 885 miles. Seattle to Los Angeles is about 1,140. Same road, same trailer, a quarter of the trip already done.
Where it shows up in days
Eugene to the Bay Area is 2 to 3 days over about 640 miles. From Seattle the same delivery is about 870 miles. The saving is mostly in the calendar rather than the price.
Where it shows up in dollars
At the top of each range. Eugene to Los Angeles tops out at $1,150 where Seattle to Los Angeles tops out at $1,200. Not huge, but it is real and it goes the right way.
Why the floor does not move
Honest answer: below about 900 miles the fixed work sets the price. Reaching the car, the inspection, loading, paperwork and two handovers cost the same whether the drive is 500 miles or 900. Only the driving scales.
That last point is worth knowing before you compare quotes, because it explains something that looks wrong at first glance. Eugene to Sacramento is about 525 miles and Eugene to Los Angeles is about 885, yet they start at the same $900. The extra 360 miles of driving is the cheap part of the job.
The flip side is the good news: going further down California costs much less than people brace for. Get Los Angeles and San Diego priced alongside Sacramento rather than assuming the southern ones are out of reach.
No emissions test in Lane County
Oregon runs one of the lightest sets of rules of any state we ship into, and Eugene gets the best of it.
Oregon DEQ tests most vehicles in the Portland and Medford metro areas only. Eugene and the rest of Lane County sit outside both, so there is no test to book, no station to find and nothing to pay for. If you are arriving from a state that tests every year, that errand simply ends.
Oregon gives you 30 days from the date of sale to submit the title application. Miss it and the fee is $25 between 31 and 60 days, or $50 after that. There is no scramble the week the car arrives.
Oregon does not publish a day count for new residents the way Florida and Texas do. What it publishes is that to register a vehicle you must be a resident of, or domiciled in, the state. So sort it in the first few weeks and you are fine.
Portland is one of the two DEQ areas, so plan on an emissions test if that is where the car is going. Vehicles in their first four model years are treated differently, and motorcycles, trailers and heavy diesels over 8,500 pounds are handled separately.
One thing worth saying plainly: Eugene being outside the testing area does not depend on the car. It is about where the vehicle is registered, so any car registered in Lane County is outside it.
The one Oregon clock that actually matters
If you bought the car somewhere else and you are shipping it here, this is the paragraph to read.
Oregon charges a vehicle use tax of one half of one percent on the retail price of a vehicle bought from a dealer outside Oregon that has to be titled here. On a $30,000 car that is $150. It is due within 30 days of purchase, and that is the important part.
The clock starts when you buy, not when the car lands. A week on a truck is a week of the 30 days. Buy on a Monday and book the shipment the same week and you will still have about three weeks in hand when it arrives.
Tell us at quote time that the car is a recent out-of-state purchase and we will aim the pickup window early in your 30 days rather than late. It costs nothing and it takes the pressure off the far end.
Going the other way, Oregon is an attractive place to buy. The state has no general sales tax, and its vehicle privilege tax carries an exemption for vehicle sales to buyers who are not Oregon residents. A good number of the cars we load in Eugene are heading to a buyer in another state for exactly that reason.
One caveat we would rather give you than have you assume: the use tax as written covers purchases from dealers outside Oregon. A private-party sale is a different case, so check it with the Oregon Department of Revenue for your own situation.
Loading in Eugene
Getting in and out is easy
Interstate 105 runs from I-5 right into the middle of town, and Eugene has plenty of wide arterials and large lots. Beltline Road handles the north side. A full-length carrier has somewhere to work almost anywhere in the city.
The older districts need a plan
Whiteaker, Friendly and the streets around the university are narrow, with parked cars and a lot of tree cover. Name the neighborhood when you book and the driver picks a lot nearby, at no extra cost.
Student housing at term time
Late August and early September the streets near campus fill up. We arrange the handover at a wide lot a short walk away, which is faster for everyone and saves the driver circling.
Our nearest staffed office is in Lakewood, Washington, at 5607 Boston Ave SW, and the direct line is 253-200-5645. It coordinates the Pacific Northwest and sits 255 miles up Interstate 5. Our other staffed offices are in Los Angeles, Chicago and Kissimmee, Florida, with six further service areas.
Winter, rain, and what actually slows a truck down
Two things get raised on every Oregon quote, and only one of them matters.
The rain does not. The Willamette Valley is wet from November to April, and the cars we load in it arrive in the same condition they would after a wet week at home. An open trailer in rain is no different from driving in rain. If the paint is the point, enclosed is the answer, but rain on its own is not a reason to upgrade.
The passes do, a little, and only in some directions. Interstate 5 stays open through the valley all year. The one real climb is the Siskiyou Summit at the California line, which takes occasional snow and can hold a truck for a few hours. Going east, the Cascades and the Blue Mountains are a genuine winter factor, which is why the eastbound rows carry a wider day range.
So a January quote to California looks much like a July one. A January quote to Denver or Chicago carries a day of allowance, and that allowance is already in the range on this page rather than being added later.
Who ships cars in and out of Eugene
University of Oregon families
Our busiest reason for this route. A car up at the start of term and home in June, often the same two legs each year. Book two to three weeks ahead in late August.
Out-of-state car buyers
No general sales tax and a privilege-tax exemption for non-resident buyers make Oregon a popular place to buy. Give us the dealer contact and we handle the pickup.
Relocations
The valley draws people from California and the Southwest steadily. Two-car households usually ship both and fly.
Retirement and seasonal moves
A car south to Arizona or California for the winter and back in spring. The southbound leg is the easy one from here.
Classic and project cars
The valley has a strong restoration scene. Enclosed transport, low-clearance ramps, and drivers used to cars that do not sit at normal ride height.
Remote purchases
A car bought at auction or privately and never collected. Give us the seller contact and we arrange it without you being there.

Open, enclosed or expedited from Eugene
Open transport carries almost every car we move here, and every price on this page is an open price. Enclosed puts the car inside a covered trailer and costs about 80 percent more, so Eugene to Los Angeles comes out around $1,625 to $2,075.
For a car heading south we would usually tell you to skip enclosed. The run down Interstate 5 crosses no salted road and climbs nothing worse than the Siskiyou Summit, so an open shipment to California arrives in good shape in any month. Where enclosed earns its money here is a winter run east, since Interstate 84 and everything beyond it is salted heavily. And of course on a collector car, an exotic, a low car or fresh paint, whichever way it is going.
Expedited narrows the pickup window from six days to three. The drive does not shorten, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. It pays off most on the short lanes: Eugene to Portland is a one-day drive, so the collection window is nearly your whole timeline. The open and enclosed guide covers the trailer choice and the standard versus expedited guide covers the timing one.
A car that will not start ships perfectly well. It loads on a winch, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and telling us at quote time means the right truck is assigned from the start.
The carrier behind your shipment
One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole distance, with no transfer along the way and no night in a storage yard. Active FMCSA authority and a live insurance filing come first and nothing moves without both. After that comes the trailer, how often that driver runs the Interstate 5 corridor, and how their recent deliveries went.
That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from pickup to delivery, and the certificate is yours on request. Our own record is public on SAFER at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
