Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the single largest cost in hauling a car and it tracks the market, so the rows get reviewed against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. A mid-size SUV adds about $150 and a full-size pickup or three-row SUV about $300. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.

Where these figures come from. Almost every row is stepped along the curve we already publish on our Eugene page, adjusted for Salem being 65 miles north. The Seattle row is cross-checked against our Tacoma to Portland page, the Chicago and New York rows against our Olympia page, and Las Vegas, Denver and Phoenix against our Spokane page. Nothing here contradicts a figure we publish elsewhere.

The Oregon coast is quoted live rather than priced from the table. Lincoln City, Newport, Tillamook and Astoria are reached on winding two-lane roads over the Coast Range, so a driver can go hours off his line. Tell us the address and we will price it properly.

What 47 miles to Portland really costs, and when we would tell you to drive it

Salem to Portland is the shortest row we publish anywhere on this site. That deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

The price is $450 to $600. And if the car runs and you have a driver, 47 miles is about an hour of your time, so driving it is usually the better call. We would rather tell you that than take the booking and have you work it out afterwards.

When shipping is the right answer

Four situations, and they come up constantly. A car that will not start and needs a winch. Two vehicles moving with one driver. A dealer, auction or body shop transfer where nobody has the time to spare. And a customer who cannot drive it themselves, which covers a lot of older and recovering customers. On all four, $450 to $600 is money well spent.

When driving is the right answer

A running car, a free hour and a license. That is it. Call us anyway if you are not sure, and we will say which we would do. The reason we built this company was that too many transport companies would not give you that answer straight.

The same logic scales up the valley. Eugene and Corvallis are 65 miles and price the same. Bend and Seattle are 200 and 220 miles, which is a long enough day that shipping starts to make sense for more people. Past about 300 miles the question usually answers itself.

What to do with this. Get the quote either way. It takes a minute and it costs nothing, and knowing the number makes the decision easy. If we think you should drive it, we will say so on the phone.

Salem Car Shipping Questions

The questions Salem and mid-valley customers really ask, answered with this city's own numbers.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Salem, Oregon?

The cost to ship a car to or from Salem, Oregon is typically $450 to $2,025 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 10 days in transit time. Portland starts at $450 to $600 over about 47 miles. Orlando reaches $1,875 to $2,025 over about 3,080. Every row in the table on this page is a real destination priced from Salem.

Is it worth shipping a car only 47 miles to Portland?

Sometimes yes, and sometimes we will tell you to drive it. If the car runs and you have a driver, 47 miles is an hour of your time and that is usually the better answer. Shipping earns its keep when the car will not start, when you have two cars and one driver, when a dealer or auction needs it moved, or when nobody is available to make the trip. We will quote it either way and tell you straight which we would do.

So when is a short Salem move worth shipping?

Four situations, and they come up more than you would think. A car that will not start and needs a winch. Two vehicles moving with one driver. A dealer, auction or body shop transfer where nobody has the time. And a customer who cannot drive it themselves, which covers a lot of older and injured customers. On all four, $450 to $600 for the Portland run is money well spent.

What is the cheapest route out of Salem?

Portland at $450 to $600 over about 47 miles, and Eugene or Corvallis at the same price over about 65. Both are a single day. Salem sits in the middle of the Willamette Valley, so the whole valley is inside the cheapest band we publish.

What actually decides my Salem price?

Four things. How far the car is going, which is why the table is sorted by distance. What the vehicle is, since a mid-size SUV adds about $150 and a full-size pickup or three-row SUV about $300. Whether you choose open or enclosed. And the season, because summer is the busiest stretch on the West Coast. Your quote is one price for the whole trip, worked out for its distance and the route it takes.

How much more is a truck or an SUV?

A mid-size SUV or crossover adds about $150 to the figure in the table. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV adds about $300. Those are the steps we publish across our long-haul pages and they hold here too. It comes down to deck space and weight, nothing else.

Are the prices on this page fixed?

They are careful estimates, reviewed against the market. Fuel is the largest single cost in hauling a car, and it moves. So we review these rows against it rather than letting them go stale. Once you accept a quote, the Smart Price Promise holds it. That holds as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same.

What is included in the price?

Door to door pickup and delivery, loading and unloading, the road miles, and Carrier Cargo Insurance for the whole trip. There is no terminal fee. There is no fuel surcharge added later. Enclosed transport and a vehicle that will not start are priced up front, not at the curb.

How much more is enclosed transport?

Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open on the same route. It is the right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything low to the ground. Oregon rain is the other reason people ask about it here, though open carriers handle wet weather perfectly well.

What does it cost to ship a car that will not start?

A vehicle that will not start needs a winch truck. That adds $200 or more, depending on what the driver has to do to get it aboard. There is no flat fee. A car that rolls and steers is a very different job from one that does neither. Tell us the true condition when you request a quote and the figure is in your price from the start.

How can I get a lower price on my Salem shipment?

Give us the widest pickup window you can live with. That is the single best lever you have. A driver filling the last space on a trailer will often take a nearby car rather than travel further for a better paying one. Interstate 5 carries plenty of those past Salem every day. Also ask about the student, military and senior discounts.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes. Student, military and senior discounts apply in either direction. Ask before your price is confirmed and the discount is built into the figure you agree to, rather than adjusted afterwards.

Why does Los Angeles cost less than Denver from Salem?

Because Los Angeles is straight down one road and Denver is not. Salem to Los Angeles is about 950 miles at $925 to $1,175. Salem to Denver is about 1,220 miles at $1,150 to $1,350. The Los Angeles run is Interstate 5 the whole way, on the busiest freight corridor on the West Coast. Denver means crossing the mountains on a thinner route, and a thinner route costs more for its distance before the extra miles are even counted.

How does Salem compare with Eugene on price?

Very closely, and the difference flips by direction. Salem is 65 miles north of Eugene, so it is nearer Portland and Seattle and a little further from California. Eugene to Los Angeles is $900 to $1,150 over about 885 miles. Salem is $925 to $1,175 over about 950. Going north, Salem is the cheaper of the two.

How long does Salem car shipping take?

Between 1 and 10 days on the road, depending on distance. Portland, Eugene, Bend and Seattle are a single day. Boise, Sacramento and the Bay Area are 2 to 3. Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego are 3 to 4. Denver is 3 to 5, Phoenix 4 to 5, Dallas 5 to 6, Chicago 6 to 7, and the East Coast 7 to 10.

When does the transit clock start?

When your car is loaded, not when you book. The pickup window comes first and the road days follow it. That is why the two numbers are quoted separately on every route in the table. Plan your dates around both.

How soon can a carrier pick up in Salem?

The standard pickup window is 6 days. Expedited narrows it to 3 days, which is 72 hours. Salem sits directly on Interstate 5, so there is usually a truck within reach and we are often able to place a car near the early end of that window.

Can I get a faster pickup?

Yes. Expedited scheduling narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same. Federal driving-hour limits apply to every driver on the interstate, and no service moves them. What you are buying is a faster start, not a faster truck.

How many miles does a car carrier actually cover in a day?

Comfortably under 400 on a long run, and that is the honest figure. Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day, and there are usually eight or nine other cars on the trailer with their own pickup and delivery points. Anyone quoting 500 miles a day is describing a car with one driver, not a loaded nine-car carrier. Our transit ranges are built on what a carrier really does.

Does Oregon rain slow a shipment down?

Hardly at all, and it never stops one. Willamette Valley winters are wet rather than frozen, and Interstate 5 stays open through almost anything along this stretch. The one thing worth a day of flexibility is a mountain route, so a Denver or Salt Lake City booking in January is worth planning a little wider than a Los Angeles one.

What is the busiest time of year?

May through August, driven by family moves and college dates. Capacity tightens and the best pickup dates go first. Spring and fall give you the widest choice, so if your dates are flexible aim for March to April or late September to November.

Why does Salem price well for its size?

Because of where it sits. Salem is directly on Interstate 5, in the middle of the Willamette Valley, with Portland 47 miles north and Eugene 65 miles south. Interstate 5 is the busiest freight corridor on the West Coast and runs 1,381 miles from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. Trucks pass Salem in both directions all day, so your car fills a space on a trip that was already happening.

What route does my car take?

It depends on the direction. North or south is Interstate 5, the whole way, which covers Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego. East means Interstate 84 from Portland for Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver, or US 20 and US 97 for Bend. Southeast for Las Vegas and Phoenix picks up Interstate 5 to Sacramento and then cuts across.

Is Salem really Oregon's second-largest city?

It is, and it is also the state capital. Salem had 175,535 people at the 2020 census, estimated at about 180,406 by 2024, which puts it second in Oregon behind Portland and ahead of Eugene. It is the county seat of Marion County, and West Salem sits across the river in Polk County.

Do you pick up across the whole mid valley?

Yes, and most of it prices with Salem. Keizer, West Salem, Independence, Monmouth, Dallas, Woodburn, Silverton, Stayton, Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon are all the same job to us. McMinnville and Newberg price with Salem too, and they sit between here and Portland.

Do you ship to and from the Oregon coast?

Yes, and the coast is quoted live rather than priced from the table. Lincoln City, Newport, Tillamook and Astoria are reached on winding two-lane highways over the Coast Range, so a driver may go hours off his line. Tell us the address and we will price it properly rather than guessing.

Can a car carrier reach my street in Salem?

Usually yes, and Salem is one of the easier cities we serve. A full-size carrier is about 75 feet long and needs room to turn. Most of Salem, Keizer and the valley towns have the space. In the older grid streets downtown and in parts of West Salem we meet you a few minutes away at no extra cost.

What is a meet-point, and does it cost extra?

It is a nearby spot with room for the truck, and it costs nothing extra. Normally a wide road or a retail lot a few minutes from your address. We use one when a street cannot take a 75-foot carrier safely. The paperwork and the inspection are exactly the same there, and the car is loaded in the open where you can see it.

Can you pick up on a rural road outside Salem?

Yes. We do it regularly across the valley farm roads. Narrow shoulders and soft ground are the two things to tell us about, because a loaded trailer needs firm level ground. If the road will not take one, we agree a spot on a paved route nearby and the handover happens there.

Can you pick up near Portland airport?

We meet you near it rather than inside it. Airport property is controlled and there is nowhere for a carrier to work. A meet-point close by works well, and plenty of our Salem customers fly one way and meet the car at the other end.

Does my car need a DEQ test in Salem?

No. Oregon DEQ says non-exempt passenger vehicles are tested every two years in the Portland and Medford metropolitan areas. Salem is its own metro area, 47 miles south of Portland, so it sits outside both. A car shipped to Salem needs no DEQ test. DEQ has a boundary lookup tool if you want to confirm your exact address.

So Salem is easier than Portland on paperwork?

On the emissions side, yes, and it is a genuine saving of a trip. A car registered in the Portland metro area needs a DEQ test every two years. A car registered in Salem does not. Same state, same DMV, one fewer errand.

How long do I have to register a car in Oregon?

Oregon does not publish a new-resident day count the way most states do. What it does set is 30 days from the date of sale to title a vehicle you have bought, with late fees after that. If you are moving in rather than buying, start the paperwork soon after your car arrives and you will be comfortably inside anything the DMV asks for.

What is the Oregon vehicle use tax?

It is one half of one percent on certain vehicles bought outside Oregon, and the timing catches people out. It is due within 30 days of the purchase date, not the date your car is delivered. So if you bought a car out of state and shipped it here, the clock started when you bought it. Worth checking with the Oregon DMV before your car arrives.

Do I pay Oregon privilege tax if I am buying here and shipping out?

Generally no. Oregon's vehicle privilege tax applies to dealer sales in Oregon, and there is an exemption where the vehicle is sold to a buyer who is not an Oregon resident. Plenty of our Salem pickups are exactly that: an out-of-state buyer purchasing here and shipping the car home. Ask the dealer to confirm the exemption paperwork.

Can you ship a car I bought out of state to Salem?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do into the valley. We collect from a dealer, an auction, a private seller or a storage lot and deliver to your Salem address. Have the seller ready with the keys and the paperwork. Tell us if the car has been sitting long enough that it may not start, so the right truck is assigned.

Can you ship a car to a college near Salem?

Yes. Willamette University and Corban in Salem, Oregon State in Corvallis, Western Oregon in Monmouth, Linn-Benton in Albany, and the University of Oregon an hour south in Eugene. Late August and mid-May are the tightest weeks. Book two to three weeks ahead and the student discount applies.

Is my vehicle insured while it is being shipped?

Yes. Your car travels under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance. Cover starts the moment it is loaded and ends when it is handed back to you. It goes from your address straight onto the trailer. No terminal, no holding lot, no gap in between. You can check any carrier's active authority and insurance on the FMCSA SAFER system before your car is loaded, and we will tell you who the carrier is.

Is my car stored anywhere along the way?

No. It stays on the same carrier from pickup to delivery and is covered the whole way. There is no terminal and no holding lot in the middle. One trailer, one driver, and a handover at each end.

Do I have to be there for pickup and delivery?

Someone does, at both ends. The driver walks the car with you and records its condition on the Bill of Lading, and you both sign. It takes a few minutes, and it is what protects you. Better to be there than to leave the keys.

Can someone else release or receive the car?

Yes. Any adult you nominate can hand the car over or take delivery, as long as we have their name and number at booking. A family member, a neighbor or a friend all work fine. Plenty of our Salem shipments are arranged by someone who is not standing next to the car.

Can I leave personal items in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Keep it light and keep it low. Use the trunk or the footwells rather than the seats or the parcel shelf, so the driver can see out and the weight stays sensible. Take anything valuable or irreplaceable with you. Tell us at booking if you are packing more than a suitcase or two, and the assigned carrier will be expecting it.

How much fuel should be in the tank?

About a quarter of a tank is ideal. That is enough to load, unload and drive away at the far end. It also avoids weight the trailer does not need. A full tank on nine cars adds up fast.

Should I wash the car before pickup?

It helps, and in a wet climate it helps more than usual. A clean car makes the condition report at pickup much easier to read, which makes the inspection at delivery easier too. Photograph it in daylight from all four corners once it is clean, and you have your own record alongside the Bill of Lading.

What is a Bill of Lading?

It is the condition report for your car, and the most useful piece of paper in the whole trip. The driver records the car's condition at pickup and you both sign. At delivery you compare the car against it before signing again. Keep your copy until the delivery is complete and you are satisfied.

What happens if something is damaged in transit?

Note it on the Bill of Lading at delivery, before you sign, and photograph it. That is the record that matters. Then call us. We handle the claim with the carrier from there rather than leaving it with you. It is rare, and it is why the two inspections are worth the few minutes they take.

Can you ship two cars at once?

Yes, and it is often the better deal. Both cars go on the same carrier and arrive together, which suits a household move. It is also the answer when you have two vehicles and one driver, even on the short Portland run. Tell us both vehicles when you request the quote and the price covers the pair.

Do you ship SUVs, pickups and vans?

Yes, every week. A mid-size SUV or crossover adds about $150 to the table figure. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV adds about $300. Minivans and work vans ship on open trailers too. Oversized lifted trucks and dual-rear-wheel pickups get their own quote.

Can you ship a lowered or modified car?

Yes, and tell us about it when you book. Low ground clearance, a front splitter, a wide body or oversized wheels all change which trailer and ramps the job needs. Given the details up front, we assign a carrier equipped for it. For anything very low that is usually enclosed transport with a lift gate.

Do you ship classic cars from the Willamette Valley?

Yes, and enclosed transport is what we recommend for one. It costs about 80 percent above the open price and keeps the car away from weather and road debris for the entire trip. The valley has a good show and swap-meet calendar, and enclosed is the usual choice for anything heading to one.

Can you ship an electric vehicle?

Yes. An EV ships like any other car and the battery does not need charging on the way. Tell us the model when you book, because some EVs are heavier than a comparable gas car and that affects where the driver places it on the deck. Leave it at a moderate state of charge rather than full.

Do you handle dealer and auction shipments in Salem?

Yes, on their own terms and timelines. We move vehicles for dealers across the valley and collect from auction lots in Oregon and Washington. Tell us the lot, the gate hours and the release paperwork at booking and the pickup goes smoothly.

Does Smart Auto Move have an office near Salem?

The closest is Lakewood, Washington, at 5607 Boston Ave SW on 253-200-5645, about 220 miles north up Interstate 5. It is one of our four staffed offices. Your Salem shipment is arranged there or on the national line at 888-709-9078, by the team that books the Interstate 5 corridor every week.

Which routes on this page reach one of your offices?

Four of them. Seattle, Tacoma or Lakewood at about 220 miles, Los Angeles at about 950, Chicago at about 2,130, and Orlando or Kissimmee at about 3,080. On those routes a Smart Auto Move team handles the far end as well as the booking.

Where are your offices and service areas?

Four staffed offices: Lakewood in Washington at 5607 Boston Ave SW, Los Angeles at 5111 Harold Way Suite 301, Chicago at 742 E 87th Pl, and Kissimmee in Florida at 2095 E Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy. Plus six service areas: McKinney and Houston in Texas, the Bronx and Huntington Station in New York, Iselin in New Jersey and Portsmouth in Virginia.

Who actually moves my car?

Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company. We arrange and manage your transport end to end. The job goes to a vetted carrier from a network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. We stay with it until the car is delivered. You will know which carrier has your car, and you can check their authority and insurance yourself before it is loaded.

How do I check that you are properly authorized?

Look us up on the FMCSA SAFER system under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Both numbers are on every page of this site for exactly that reason. We are also BBB A plus accredited. We will give you the assigned carrier's USDOT number so you can check them too.

Will you call or text me after I request a quote?

No. We do not call or text quote-form leads. Your quote comes back to you, and the next move is yours. If you would rather talk it through, call the Lakewood office on 253-200-5645 or the national line on 888-709-9078.

Do you sell my information?

No. Information you share with Smart Auto Move for the purpose of receiving a quote is used for that purpose only. We do not sell your information. That is why the quote form on this page does not turn into a week of calls from companies you have never heard of.

Where does Smart Auto Move ship?

Smart Auto Move provides nationwide car shipping throughout the lower 48 states, backed by four strategically located staffed offices, six additional service areas, and a trusted carrier network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. Service is not currently available in Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.

How do I book a Salem car shipment?

Start with the quote form on this page, or call 888-709-9078. We need both ZIP codes, plus the year, make and model. Then whether the car runs, your first available date, and open or enclosed. You will have a price to look at, and nothing is booked until you say so.

Salem sits in the middle of everything, and that sets the price

Salem is Oregon's second-largest city and its capital, with 175,535 people at the 2020 census and around 180,406 by 2024. It is the county seat of Marion County, with West Salem across the river in Polk County. What matters for shipping is the position.

The city sits in the center of the Willamette Valley, on the Willamette River, directly on the Interstate 5 corridor, about 47 miles south of Portland. Interstate 5 runs 1,381 miles from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and is the busiest freight route on the West Coast. Trucks pass Salem in both directions all day.

North and south are effortless

Portland, Seattle, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego are all one road away. We can usually catch a truck already running past, which is why those rows sit at the bottom of their bands.

East takes a little planning

Boise, Salt Lake City and Denver mean Interstate 84 out of Portland, or US 20 and US 97 for Bend. A driver going east has a leg to make before he is on his main line, so a wider pickup window helps more on those rows.

The whole valley is one market

Keizer, West Salem, Independence, Monmouth, Dallas, Woodburn, Silverton, Stayton, Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon all price with Salem. So do McMinnville and Newberg, which sit between here and Portland.

Two universities an hour apart

Willamette and Corban in Salem, Oregon State in Corvallis, Western Oregon in Monmouth, Linn-Benton in Albany, and the University of Oregon an hour south. Late August and mid-May are the tightest weeks of the year.

The capital brings its own traffic

State government moves people in and out of Salem on its own schedule rather than the school calendar, which spreads our bookings more evenly through the year than most cities this size.

The coast is its own answer

Lincoln City, Newport, Tillamook and Astoria are over the Coast Range on winding two-lane roads. We serve them, and we quote them live rather than from the table.

An honest word about how far a carrier gets in a day

You will see 400 to 500 miles a day quoted around the auto transport industry. It is worth knowing where that number comes from, because it is not what a loaded car carrier does.

Federal rules cap how long a driver may be behind the wheel each day. On top of that, a nine-car trailer has eight other pickups and deliveries to fit in, and the route is built around all of them. A loaded carrier on a long run comfortably covers under 400 miles a day, and every transit range in the table above is built on that rather than on a best case.

What that means for your dates

Salem to Los Angeles is about 950 miles, and we publish 3 to 4 days. A car with one driver could do it in two long days. A carrier working legally takes three or four, and we would rather tell you four than promise two and miss.

Why we publish it this way

An optimistic transit figure costs you nothing until the day your car does not arrive. We build our ranges from what carriers actually do, which is why the numbers on this page are a little wider than some you will see and a great deal more likely to hold.

Good news on Oregon paperwork, and Salem gets the best of it

Oregon is one of the easier states in the country for a car arriving from somewhere else, and Salem specifically avoids the one test the state does run.

No DEQ test in Salem

Oregon DEQ tests non-exempt passenger vehicles every two years in the Portland and Medford metropolitan areas. That is the whole program. Salem is its own metro area, 47 miles south of Portland, so it sits outside both and a car registered here needs no DEQ test at all. DEQ has a boundary lookup if you want to confirm your exact address. Oregon DEQ testing boundaries

Easier here than in Portland

A car registered in the Portland metro area needs a DEQ test every two years. A car registered in Salem does not. Same state, same DMV, one fewer errand every other year.

Thirty days from the date of sale

Oregon does not publish a new-resident day count the way most states do. What it does set is 30 days from the date of sale to title a vehicle you have bought, with late fees after that. Moving in rather than buying? Start the paperwork soon after your car arrives and you are comfortably inside anything the DMV asks.

Watch the use-tax clock

Oregon's vehicle use tax is one half of one percent on certain vehicles bought outside the state, and it is due within 30 days of the purchase date rather than the delivery date. So if you bought out of state and shipped the car here, that clock started when you bought it. Worth a check with the Oregon DMV before your car lands.

Buying in Oregon and shipping the car out of state? Oregon's vehicle privilege tax applies to dealer sales here, and there is an exemption where the buyer is not an Oregon resident. Plenty of our Salem pickups are exactly that. Ask the dealer to confirm the exemption paperwork.

Loading a car in Salem

A full-size carrier is around 75 feet long and needs room to turn plus firm level ground to load on. Most of Salem gives it both. Where a street does not, we sort it out at booking rather than at the curb, and it costs you nothing.

The suburbs are simple

Keizer, South Salem, Four Corners, Hayesville and the newer developments have wide roads and driveway access. Door to door almost every time.

Downtown and the older grid

The blocks around the Capitol and Willamette University are narrow with cars on both sides. A meet-point on a wide arterial a few minutes away is usually the right answer.

West Salem and the hills

Across the river in Polk County the streets climb and narrow. We plan the meet-point in advance rather than discovering the turn on the day.

Valley farm roads

Gravel drives and soft shoulders are the two things to mention. A loaded trailer needs firm ground, so we agree a spot on a paved route nearby if needed.

Apartments

We hand the car over at street level or in an open part of the lot. Parking structures have clearances a carrier cannot enter. Tell us the complex at booking.

Winter here is wet, not frozen

Willamette Valley winters rarely stop a truck. Interstate 5 stays open through almost anything along this stretch, so a January booking needs far less padding than a mountain route.

Who ships cars in and out of Salem

Relocating households

The biggest group, in both directions. The valley pulls people in from California and sends people north to Portland and Seattle. Two cars on one trailer is usually the better deal.

Students

Willamette and Corban in Salem, Oregon State in Corvallis, Western Oregon in Monmouth, Linn-Benton in Albany. Late August and mid-May are the tightest weeks. Student discount.

Online buyers

A car bought out of state and shipped home. Salem sits inside a day of Portland, Seattle, Eugene and Bend, so the shopping radius is wide and the shipping is cheap.

Out-of-state buyers

Buying a car in Oregon and shipping it home. The privilege-tax exemption for non-Oregon buyers makes this a popular direction, and we collect from dealers across the valley.

Snowbirds

Arizona and Southern California are 3 to 5 days away. October to December going south, March to May coming back. Book both legs together if your dates are settled.

Dealers, auctions and collectors

The valley has an active dealer market and a good show calendar. Dealer shipping and auction pickups run on their own terms and timelines.

How Salem car shipping works

Get your price

We need both ZIP codes. Then the year, make and model, whether the car runs, your first available date, and open or enclosed. Use the form on this page, or call 888-709-9078.

Confirm the booking

Review the route, the transport type, the timing and the access at both ends. Then your price. The Smart Price Promise holds it from the moment you accept.

We assign a carrier

Your job goes to a vetted carrier, from a network of more than 16,000 transport professionals nationwide. We tell you who it is. You can check their authority and insurance yourself.

Pickup

Standard pickup window is 6 days, expedited is 3 days, which is 72 hours. The driver walks the car with you and records its condition on the Bill of Lading. Then he loads.

On the road

1 to 10 days, depending on distance, within federal driving-hour limits and around the other cars on the trailer. Call any time for an update.

Delivery

The driver calls as he approaches and agrees a safe, legal handover point. Compare the car against the pickup report. Note anything before you sign, and it is yours.

Open, enclosed or expedited from Salem

Open transport

The basis for every figure in the table and the right choice for most cars, SUVs and pickups. Best value on any route, and the trailers run Interstate 5 constantly.

Enclosed transport

About 80 percent above open. The right call for a classic, a collector car, an exotic, a fresh restoration or anything low to the ground.

Expedited pickup

Narrows the pickup window from 6 days to 3, which is 72 hours. The road days stay the same, because federal driving-hour limits apply to every truck on the interstate.

Mid-size car

Accord, Camry, Malibu, 3 Series and similar. Every figure in the table is for one of these.

Mid-size SUV or crossover

RAV4, CR-V, Equinox, Highlander and similar. Add about $150 to the table figure.

Full-size pickup or three-row SUV

F-150, Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and similar. Add about $300 to the table figure.

What our customers say

Written by Richard Avery

President, Smart Auto Move Inc

Richard Avery founded Smart Auto Move because too many auto transport companies were treating customers badly. There was no easy way to tell an honest company from the rest. He has worked in vehicle transport for over a decade, and writes about routes, pricing and carrier coordination. The figures on this page come from the lane prices already published across this site, and from Smart Auto Move's own recent Interstate 5 shipments. They are reviewed as the market moves.
