Seattle to San Diego Car Shipping

Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move  Â·  USDOT 2887232  Â·  MC 969368

Seattle to San Diego car shipping runs almost the entire length of I-5, a road that starts at the Canadian border in Blaine and finishes at the Mexican border in San Ysidro. Smart Auto Move is a car shipping company, and this is one of the simplest long lanes in the country: one interstate the whole way, no mountain passes, and two markets that trade vehicles in both directions all year.

Quick answer:

As of August 2026, shipping a mid-size vehicle from Seattle to San Diego on an open carrier costs $1,000 to $1,300, with transit of 3 to 4 days after pickup over roughly 1,255 miles. Tacoma, Lakewood, Everett and Olympia price the same. Delivery anywhere in San Diego County, including Chula Vista, Oceanside and Carlsbad, is covered at the same rate.

Military & PCS

What does a JBLM to San Diego PCS vehicle move cost?

JBLM to any San Diego installation runs $1,000 to $1,300 on an open carrier in 3 to 4 days. San Diego holds the largest concentration of naval power anywhere in the world, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord sits beside our Lakewood office, so this is a lane we run constantly in both directions.

PCS route Distance Transit Estimated price
JBLM, WA → Naval Base San Diego, CA 1,290 mi 3–4 days $1,000–$1,300
JBLM, WA → NAS North Island, Coronado, CA 1,295 mi 3–4 days $1,000–$1,300

Sea duty and deployment timing

A vehicle often needs to arrive before the sailor does, or leave after they have already gone. We can collect from a Washington address and deliver to a spouse, a sponsor or a friend in San Diego, with the condition report signed by whoever you nominate. Tell us at booking and we will set it up.

Base access

Carriers cannot always drive a full-size transport onto an installation. Delivery for Naval Base San Diego, North Island, Miramar and MCRD usually happens at an accessible commercial lot just outside the gate, which takes minutes and avoids a wasted trip if credentials or escort arrangements are not in place.

Camp Pendleton is its own trip

Pendleton stretches for miles along the coast north of Oceanside and the housing areas are spread out. Give us the specific area or gate you need at booking, and ask about the military discount before your price is confirmed.

The Route

What route does your vehicle take from Seattle to San Diego?

I-5, and nothing else

The carrier joins I-5 in Seattle and stays on it for 1,255 miles through Portland, the Siskiyou Summit, Sacramento, the San Joaquin Valley, Los Angeles and into San Diego. There is no interstate change and no detour. It is about as clean as a long-haul route gets, and it is why transit on this lane is so predictable.

No Cascade passes

Because the truck runs south rather than east, this lane never touches Snoqualmie, White or Chinook. The one elevation worth knowing about is Siskiyou Summit on the Oregon and California border, which can require chains in a hard winter storm but clears quickly. Seattle to San Diego holds its schedule through winter better than almost any other long lane out of Puget Sound.

Why 3 to 4 days

A driver alone could cover 1,255 miles in two long days. A car carrier cannot. Federal hours-of-service rules cap daily driving, and the truck is loading and unloading eight to ten other vehicles at stops along the way. Three to four days is the honest window, and this lane usually holds it.

Pickup & Delivery

Where do we collect in Washington and deliver in San Diego?

Puget Sound pickup

Seattle, Tacoma, Lakewood, Bellevue, Everett, Lynnwood, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, Auburn, Puyallup, Olympia, DuPont, Gig Harbor and Bremerton, across King, Pierce, Snohomish, Thurston and Kitsap counties. Statewide pickup is available beyond that, including Spokane, Vancouver, Yakima and the Tri-Cities.

Seattle and Tacoma streets

Capitol Hill, Ballard, Queen Anne and Fremont have steep grades and heavy resident parking, as do Tacoma's North End and Stadium District. Where a full-size carrier cannot turn comfortably we arrange a meet-point minutes away on a wide arterial or retail lot, and the handover happens there at no extra cost.

San Diego delivery

La Jolla, Pacific Beach, North Park, Chula Vista, El Cajon, La Mesa, Poway, Escondido, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Oceanside and the coastal north county. Most of San Diego takes a full-size carrier without trouble, and the freeway grid off I-5, I-8 and I-15 makes it one of the easier large metros in the country to deliver into.

Coronado and the older coastal streets

Coronado is reached by a single bridge with its own restrictions, and parts of La Jolla and Ocean Beach have narrow streets and tight corners built long before car carriers existed. Delivery there works best from a nearby lot, and we will agree the spot with you before the driver is anywhere near the city.

Balboa Park and downtown

Most of the Spanish Colonial buildings around Balboa Park went up as temporary pavilions for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition and simply never came down. The streets around the park and the Gaslamp Quarter are correspondingly old and tight, so downtown deliveries are usually handled from Mission Valley or the harbour side instead.

Students and seasonal moves

UC San Diego, San Diego State and the University of San Diego at one end, with UW, Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran at the other. Late August and mid-May are the tightest weeks of the year on this lane, so booking two to three weeks ahead makes a real difference to both price and pickup date.

5. Delivery coordination

FAQ

Seattle to San Diego car shipping FAQs

How much does it cost to ship a car from Seattle to San Diego?

Shipping a mid-size vehicle from Seattle to San Diego on an open carrier costs $1,000 to $1,300 as of August 2026, over roughly 1,255 miles. Tacoma, Lakewood, Everett, Olympia and Spokane all price the same. Vancouver, Washington is slightly lower at $950 to $1,250, and Bellingham slightly higher at $1,050 to $1,350.

How long does it take to ship a car from Seattle to San Diego?

Transit takes 3 to 4 days after pickup across roughly 1,255 miles. A driver alone could cover that in two long days, but a car carrier cannot: federal hours-of-service rules cap daily driving, and the truck is loading and unloading eight to ten other vehicles along the way. Bellingham pickups add about a day.

What route does the carrier take?

I-5 the entire way, with no interstate change and no detour. The truck joins I-5 in Seattle and stays on it through Portland, Siskiyou Summit, Sacramento, the San Joaquin Valley and Los Angeles into San Diego. I-5 begins at the Canadian border in Blaine and ends at the Mexican border in San Ysidro, so this lane covers most of its length.

Does winter weather affect this route?

Very little. Running south rather than east means the lane never touches Snoqualmie, White or Chinook passes. The only elevation of note is Siskiyou Summit on the Oregon and California border, which can require chains during a hard storm but clears quickly. This route holds its schedule through winter better than almost any other long lane out of Puget Sound.

What does a JBLM to San Diego PCS move cost?

JBLM to any San Diego installation runs $1,000 to $1,300 on an open carrier in 3 to 4 days. That covers Naval Base San Diego, NAS North Island at Coronado, MCAS Miramar, MCRD San Diego and Camp Pendleton at Oceanside. Military discounts are available, so ask before your price is confirmed.

Can the carrier deliver onto a military base?

Not always, and it is usually faster if it does not. Delivery for Naval Base San Diego, North Island, Miramar and MCRD is normally completed at an accessible commercial lot just outside the gate, which takes minutes and avoids a wasted trip if credentials or escort arrangements are not in place. Camp Pendleton is spread out, so tell us the gate or housing area you need.

Can you deliver somewhere other than San Diego proper?

Yes, and at the same rate. Chula Vista, Oceanside, Carlsbad, Escondido, El Cajon, La Mesa, Poway, Encinitas and the coastal north county are all covered at $1,000 to $1,300. San Diego County has a straightforward freeway grid off I-5, I-8 and I-15, which makes it one of the easier large metros in the country to deliver into.

Can you deliver to Coronado or La Jolla?

Yes. Coronado is reached by a single bridge with its own restrictions, and parts of La Jolla and Ocean Beach have narrow streets built long before car carriers existed. Delivery to those areas works best from an accessible lot nearby, agreed with you before the driver reaches the city, and it costs nothing extra.

Can you pick up outside Seattle?

Yes. Smart Auto Move arranges Washington pickups statewide, across Puget Sound in Tacoma, Lakewood, Bellevue, Everett, Kent, Renton, Federal Way, Auburn, Puyallup, Olympia, DuPont, Gig Harbor and Bremerton, and beyond in Spokane, Vancouver, Yakima, the Tri-Cities and Bellingham. Rural pickups are routine, and a meet-point in the nearest town off I-5 often speeds things up.

How can I get a lower price on this route?

Give the widest pickup window you can. A driver filling the last space on a trailer will often take a nearby vehicle rather than travel further to reach another, and a three-day window gives us far more chances to catch one of those. Flexible dates lower a car shipping price more reliably than anything else you control.

Does my car sit in a lot or terminal along the way?

No. Your car never sits anywhere. It goes from your address straight onto the carrier and stays covered under Carrier Cargo Insurance for the entire trip. There is no terminal, no holding lot and no gap in coverage between pickup in Washington and delivery in San Diego.

Can you ship a car that does not run?

Yes, when the assigned carrier has a winch or the equipment needed to load it. Inoperable vehicles are priced separately from the open transport estimates on this page. Enter the vehicle's true condition when you request a quote, because a vehicle listed as running that will not roll, steer or brake at pickup will need to be re-rated at the curb.

Will Smart Auto Move call or text me after I ask for a quote?

No. We do not call or text quote-form leads. Your quote comes back to you and the next move is yours. If you would rather talk it through, call the Lakewood office on 253-200-5645 or the Los Angeles office on 213-766-0064 and we will quote you over the phone.
