Long Island Vehicle Shipping Updated September 2026

Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move  ·  USDOT 2887232  ·  MC 969368

The cost to ship a car from Long Island is typically $1,050 to $2,300 on an open trailer depending on where it is going, and takes between two to ten days in transit time. Florida and Chicago sit at the low end, the West Coast at the top, and a car coming back to Long Island from Florida costs less than the trip out.

How much does Long Island car shipping cost?

Every row is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, checked September 2026. Distances are measured from central Nassau County, and Long Island prices the same as the rest of the New York City metro.

Long Island to Chicago SHORTESTAbout 825 miles2 to 4 days$1,050 to $1,150

Long Island to Los Angeles LONGESTAbout 2,825 miles7 to 10 days$1,900 to $2,300

These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest single cost in moving a car, and its price shifts, so these figures get reviewed with the market. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window. Enclosed costs about 80 percent more than open. A car that does not run rides on a winch truck for $200 or more extra. Coming back to Long Island costs less

Northbound is the cheaper direction on the two biggest Long Island lanes, and it is worth knowing before you book a round trip.

Route into Long IslandDistanceDays on the roadOpen transport
Central Florida to Long Island BEST VALUEAbout 1,130 miles3 to 5 days$825 to $975
Atlanta to Long IslandAbout 920 milesAbout 3 days$900 to $1,100
Tacoma or Seattle to Long IslandAbout 2,880 miles7 to 10 days$1,850 to $2,000

Orlando to Long Island runs $825 to $975 while Long Island to Orlando runs $1,250 to $1,450, on the same road. The reason is the snowbird cycle: in the fall thousands of cars head south and trucks come back with empty slots, and in the spring it reverses. Whichever direction is quieter is the one that prices low.

So a snowbird move is cheapest booked one leg at a time, in the quiet direction, rather than as a matched pair. Tell us which month you are moving and we will say plainly which leg is the bargain and which is the busy one.

Long Island Car Shipping Questions

The questions Nassau and Suffolk customers ask most, answered with this region's own numbers.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Long Island?

$1,050 to $2,300 for a running mid-size car on an open trailer, set by the destination. Chicago is about $1,050 to $1,150, Florida $1,250 to $1,500, Texas $1,350 to $1,750 and the West Coast $1,800 to $2,300.

How much does it cost to ship a car to Long Island from Florida?

$825 to $975 from central Florida, about 1,130 miles in three to five days. That is the cheapest lane on this page, and it is several hundred dollars below the same trip heading south.

Why is Florida to Long Island cheaper than Long Island to Florida?

The snowbird cycle. In the fall a great many cars head south and the trucks return with empty slots, and in the spring it reverses. The quiet direction is always the one that prices low, and on this lane the gap is worth a few hundred dollars.

How long does Long Island vehicle shipping take?

Two to four days to Chicago, three to five to Florida, four to seven to Texas and seven to ten to the West Coast. Road days are counted from the end of your pickup window.

When will the truck come for my car?

Inside a six day window, counted from the first date you give us. If a date is fixed, expedited service cuts that window to three days.

Does the truck come to my house on Long Island?

Yes, wherever the street allows a nine-car carrier. Where a street sits deep inside a parkway pocket or is too narrow, the driver asks you to meet at a wider road or a nearby lot, which takes five or ten minutes and costs nothing.

Why can't the carrier use the parkways?

The Southern State, Northern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, Sunken Meadow and Ocean Parkway carry no commercial traffic, and their stone overpasses were built low in the 1930s. Carriers work off the Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway and the turnpikes instead, so every pickup is planned from one of those.

Should I give you my cross streets?

It helps a lot on Long Island. Cross streets tell us which truck route the driver should come in on, which is the difference between a door pickup and a short meet nearby.

Do you cover the Hamptons and the North Fork?

Yes. Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor, Westhampton, Montauk, Riverhead, Greenport and the North Fork villages are all regular pickups, at the same prices as the rest of the island.

Does an East End pickup cost more than Nassau?

No. The price is the same. A car from Montauk is about 120 miles into its trip by the time it reaches the city line, so it can pick up a little road time, and that is the only difference.

Is Long Island priced differently from New York City?

No. Long Island, all five boroughs, Westchester and Yonkers price together as one New York metro market, so the figures on this page are the city's figures too.

Is there a Smart Auto Move location on Long Island?

Huntington Station in Suffolk County is one of our six service areas. Scheduling is on the national line, 888-709-9078, and your car is collected at your own address.

Can I drop my car off somewhere?

There is no need. Every shipment is door to door, so the truck comes to you. Our staffed offices are in Lakewood WA, Los Angeles CA, Chicago IL and Kissimmee FL, and the Kissimmee team covers the Florida end of the busiest Long Island lane.

What does enclosed transport add?

About 80 percent on top of the open price. It suits a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and on a winter move it keeps Long Island road salt off the underside.

Will you take a car that will not start?

Yes. It goes up on a winch, and that equipment puts $200 or more on the running price. As long as it rolls, steers and brakes it can travel, so flag it when you ask for the figure.

What is the busiest time of year here?

October and November heading south, March and April coming back, plus the weeks around the start and end of each college semester. Booking a week or two ahead in those stretches gets you the widest choice of dates.

Do I need to be there for pickup?

Someone does, at both ends. A friend, relative, neighbor or building superintendent is fine, as long as they are eighteen and can walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report.

What is the Smart Price Promise?

The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. Nothing gets added after booking on our side.

Will you call me trying to sell?

No. Smart Auto Move does not make outbound sales calls. You hear from us about your own shipment, and from the driver about pickup and delivery.

What insurance covers the car?

The Carrier Cargo Insurance belonging to the carrier assigned to your car. We check the policy is live before the load goes out, and you can have the certificate emailed to you.

Can I leave belongings in the car?

Keep it empty. The carrier's insurance covers the vehicle rather than its contents, and extra weight matters on a full trailer. If something has to travel, keep it light and below the window line.

Should I take my toll transponder out?

Yes. A transponder on the glass can read as the truck passes gantries on the way, which leaves you with charges that take time to unwind.

How much gas should be in the tank?

A quarter tank or less. Enough to load, unload and drive away, without the weight a full tank adds.

How is payment handled?

A deposit holds the booking and the rest is paid on arrival. Cash, a certified check and cards are all accepted, and the driver confirms which one they carry.

What if there is damage at delivery?

Note it on the delivery report before the driver leaves and take photos. That report set against the pickup one is what the carrier's insurance works from, and we handle the claim with you.

Do you ship SUVs and pickups?

Yes. A large SUV or a full-size pickup takes more room on the trailer so it prices above the mid-size figures. A lift kit, roof rack or oversized tires should be mentioned when you ask for a price.

Can you move a motorcycle off the island?

Yes, on equipment built for bikes. Each machine is quoted individually instead of off the car table, so tell us what it is.

Can you ship two cars together?

Yes, and two vehicles from the same Long Island address to the same destination usually cost less per car than two separate bookings.

Can you collect from a dealer or an auction here?

Yes. Give us the company name, the lot address, someone to call and the opening hours, and the driver sets it up with them.

Do I need New York insurance on a car shipped in?

Yes, and it is the one step worth handling before the car arrives. The New York DMV states that a vehicle registered in New York must carry New York insurance coverage, and out-of-state coverage of any type is not accepted.

What inspection does New York require?

One every 12 months, covering safety and an OBDII emissions check, at any licensed inspection station. Emissions is waived on a car less than two model years old or more than 25 model years old, and on electric vehicles and motorcycles.

How soon do I need a New York license?

New residents have 30 days from establishing residency to get a New York driver license, according to the New York DMV.

What do you need to quote my move?

Your Long Island town and cross streets, the destination city, the year, make and model, whether it runs, and your earliest date. Call 888-709-9078 or use the form on this page.

Why the parkways matter on Long Island

This is the one piece of local knowledge that decides how your pickup goes, and it is easy to plan around once you know it.

The truck roads

The Long Island Expressway, Sunrise Highway, Jericho Turnpike, Hempstead Turnpike, Veterans Memorial Highway and the Seaford-Oyster Bay. A nine-car carrier uses these, and every pickup is planned off one of them.

The parkways

The Southern State, Northern State, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, Sunken Meadow and Ocean Parkway carry no commercial traffic, and their stone overpasses were built low in the 1930s. A loaded carrier stays off them entirely.

What that means for you is simple. If your street sits well inside a parkway pocket, the driver approaches from a truck route instead, and may ask you to meet at a wider road or a shopping center lot nearby. That is usually five or ten minutes, at no charge, and it is why we ask for your cross streets when you book rather than just the ZIP.

The other piece is the one road off the island. Every westbound load leaves through Queens and over a bridge, so a car from Montauk is already 120 miles into its trip by the time it reaches the city line. Suffolk pickups get a little more road time for that reason, and the price stays the same.

Registering a car you bring to New York

Shipping a car onto Long Island from another state brings one requirement that catches people out, so it is worth handling first.

  • New York insurance is required. The DMV puts it plainly: "If your vehicle is registered in New York State, you must have New York insurance coverage. We will never accept out-of-state insurance coverage of any type for a vehicle registered in New York." Line that up before the car arrives.
  • New residents get a New York driver license within 30 days of establishing residency, according to the New York DMV.
  • Inspection comes around every 12 months, covering safety and an OBDII emissions check, at any licensed inspection station.
  • Emissions testing is waived on a car less than two model years old or more than 25 model years old, and on electric vehicles and motorcycles.

Leaving New York is the easier direction. Nothing is needed here before the car goes, and the new state's rules take over when it lands.

Who ships cars off Long Island

Snowbirds

The biggest group by a distance. October and November head south, March and April come home, and the quiet direction is always the cheaper one.

Students

Stony Brook, Hofstra, Adelphi, LIU Post and Farmingdale all see cars arrive and leave at the start and end of each semester.

Buyers and sellers

A car bought online, won at auction or sold to a buyer out of state, collected from a home, a dealership or a lot.

Relocations and military moves make up most of the rest. There are bases and Coast Guard stations across the region, and a car following a posting is an ordinary booking. Our military car shipping page has the detail.

Open, enclosed or expedited from Long Island

Open transport moves nearly every car on these routes, and the whole table is priced on it. Enclosed is the choice for a classic, a collector car, an exotic or fresh paint, and on Long Island it does one extra job: it keeps winter road salt off the underside on a move between December and March. Add about 80 percent to the open price.

Expedited brings the pickup window down from six days to three when a date will not move, which helps around a closing or a flight. The open and enclosed guide compares them properly.

Cars that do not start travel on these routes as well. A winch handles the loading, which adds $200 or more to the running figure, and mentioning it early gets the right truck on the job.

The carrier moving your car

One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 handles the whole trip, with no handoff in the middle. Active FMCSA authority and a current insurance filing are the first two checks, and nothing goes further without them. After that it comes down to the trailer, how regularly that driver runs the I-95 and I-80 lines out of New York, and what their last few deliveries looked like.

That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from the Long Island pickup to the delivery address, with the certificate emailed to you on request. You can look up our own record any time on SAFER under USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
