Tucson car shipping is typically $450 to $1,950 on an open trailer, and takes between 1 to 7 days in transit time. Which end of that you land on is almost entirely about distance. Tucson sits on Interstate 10, the one transcontinental route that stays clear of snow all year, and that single fact shapes everything about shipping a car here.

How much does Tucson car shipping cost?

Every row below is a running mid-size car on an open trailer, reviewed September 2026. The ranges hold in both directions, so a car coming into Tucson prices the same as a car leaving it.

Read these as estimates rather than fixed prices. Fuel is the single largest cost in hauling a car and it tracks the market, so the rows get reviewed against it. Road days start when your pickup window closes. Enclosed adds roughly 80 percent. A car that will not start needs a winch truck, which adds $200 or more. See how our national bands work.

Oro Valley, Marana, Casas Adobes, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Vail and Corona de Tucson all price with the Tucson rows. Benson and Sierra Vista sit within about 20 miles of them. Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale and Chandler share the Phoenix figure, and Tempe is about 15 miles closer.

Tucson is cheaper than Phoenix going east, and more expensive going west

This is the one thing about Tucson pricing that nobody explains, and it is simple once you see it.

Tucson sits 115 miles southeast of Phoenix on I-10. Every price on this page is really the Phoenix price plus or minus those 115 miles, and the sign depends on which way your car is pointed.

Going east or southeast, Tucson is already 115 miles down the road, so it comes in cheaper. Our Arizona car shipping page publishes Phoenix to Dallas at $975 to $1,175 over 1,065 miles. Tucson to Dallas is $925 to $1,125 over 925 miles. The same holds for Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans and Florida.

Going north or west it reverses. Phoenix to Los Angeles is $600 to $800 over 375 miles. Tucson to Los Angeles is $650 to $850 over 485 miles. Same for Las Vegas, Seattle and the Bay Area.

The practical use: if you have any choice about where in Arizona the car is collected and it is heading east, Tucson is the better starting point. Heading to California or the Pacific Northwest, Phoenix has the edge. Nobody in this business will volunteer that, and it is worth about $50 either way.

Tucson Car Shipping Questions

The questions this city really generates, answered with its own numbers.

How much does it cost to ship a car to or from Tucson?

Tucson car shipping is typically $450 to $1,950 on an open trailer for an operable mid-size vehicle, depending entirely on how far the car is going. Phoenix is $450 to $600. San Diego or Las Vegas is $625 to $825. Dallas or Denver is $925 to $1,125. Miami, the longest lane we publish from here, is $1,650 to $1,950.

How long does Tucson auto transport take?

One to seven days on the road once the car is loaded, again by distance. Phoenix is a single day. San Diego, Las Vegas and Los Angeles are 1 to 2 days. Dallas, Houston and Denver are 3 to 4 days. Seattle is 4 to 5, Chicago 5 to 6, and Miami 6 to 7. Add your pickup window for the full timeline.

Why is Tucson easier to serve than its size suggests?

Interstate 10. Tucson sits on the southern transcontinental route, which runs Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans and on to Jacksonville. It is the one coast-to-coast corridor that stays clear of snow all year, so a very large share of east-west car haulers pass through Tucson whatever the season. A mid-size metro with a major freight artery through it gets better carrier availability than its population would predict.

Is Tucson cheaper or more expensive than Phoenix?

Both, and it depends on which way you are going. Tucson is 115 miles southeast of Phoenix. Anything heading north or west costs a little more from Tucson, because the truck adds those miles. Anything heading east costs a little less, because Tucson is already 115 miles down I-10. Dallas from Tucson is $925 to $1,125 against $975 to $1,175 from Phoenix.

So which direction is Tucson the better starting point?

East and southeast. Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, New Orleans and Florida all come in cheaper from Tucson than from Phoenix. If you have a choice of where the car gets collected in Arizona and it is going east, Tucson wins. Going to California or the Pacific Northwest, Phoenix has the edge.

Do you have an office in Tucson?

Not in Arizona at all, and we would rather tell you that than invent an address. Tucson is covered by our carrier network of more than 16,000 vetted transport professionals, coordinated on the national line at 888-709-9078. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida.

Should I be concerned that you have no Tucson address?

It is worth understanding how this industry works. A great many car shipping websites list a local address in every city they serve, and those addresses are frequently just a mail drop or nothing at all. We name our four real offices and describe the rest as network coverage, which is what it is. Ask any company for the address on their FMCSA filing and compare it with the one on their city page.

Where in the Tucson area do you collect and deliver?

Across the whole metro and beyond it. Central Tucson, the university district, Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley, Marana, Casas Adobes, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Vail, Corona de Tucson, Rita Ranch, Tanque Verde, Benson and Sierra Vista.

Will the truck come to my door in Tucson?

In most of the metro, yes. Tucson is a low, wide, grid-planned city, which suits a full-size carrier better than most places. Broadway, Speedway, Grant, Oracle, Kolb and the I-10 and I-19 frontage roads all give a driver room to load and pull away.

Where might the truck need a meeting point?

Two kinds of address. The Catalina Foothills has narrow winding streets with low mesquite and palo verde branches that a loaded trailer cannot clear. And a gated community or an apartment complex with a covered entry may not have a turning circle. In both cases the driver picks a wide lot nearby and meets you there, which costs nothing and takes a few minutes.

Does Tucson have a busy season?

Yes, and it is worth planning around. Tucson is a major winter destination, so October through April sees heavy southbound traffic into southern Arizona and heavy northbound traffic out of it in spring. Booking two to three weeks ahead in those months gets you better dates. May through September is the quieter, better value stretch.

Can you ship a car for a snowbird season?

That is one of the most common things we do here. Plenty of Tucson customers run the same pair of moves every year, south in the fall and north in the spring. Ask about both legs at the same time, because the ranges are identical in either direction and it saves you doing the whole exercise twice.

Do you serve Davis-Monthan Air Force Base?

Regularly. Davis-Monthan sits inside the city and it generates a steady stream of vehicle moves in both directions. A carrier cannot drive onto the base without credentials, so the handover happens at an agreed spot just outside the gate. Tell us it is a base move when you book and we will set that up in advance.

Can you book on military orders before the dates are final?

Yes. Give us your best window and we adjust once orders settle, rather than making you wait on paperwork before you can plan. Our military car shipping page sets out what to have ready.

Do you ship cars for University of Arizona students?

Every August and every May. A car arriving for the fall semester or going home at the end of spring is a routine booking here. Deliveries near campus usually work best at a wider street a short walk away rather than on the narrow blocks immediately around it, and we sort that out with you in advance.

What is open transport?

The familiar two-level trailer carrying nine or ten cars, and every price on this page is an open price. It moves the large majority of cars through Tucson and it is the same equipment dealers receive new inventory on. Your car picks up desert dust and arrives wanting a wash, which is the whole of the downside.

How much more is enclosed transport?

Enclosed runs about 80% more than open. Against $625 to $825 for San Diego, expect somewhere around $1,125 to $1,475. The car rides inside a closed trailer, shielded from sun, grit and weather the whole way. It is the right call for a collector car, an exotic, anything low to the ground, or fresh paint.

Is enclosed worth it for the Arizona sun?

It is a fair question and the honest answer is that a few days of sun will not hurt a healthy finish. Open transport exposes your car to the same sun it would meet parked outside in Tucson. Where enclosed genuinely earns its money is a valuable finish, a soft top, or a car you would not want a stone chip on.

Can you move a car that will not start?

Yes. It needs a trailer with a winch and a driver equipped to use it, and we have plenty of both. Budget $200 upward on top of the running price. Three answers decide which rig we send, so have them ready: does it roll, does it steer, does it brake.

What does a truck or large SUV add?

A mid-size SUV usually adds $75 to $150 over the sedan ranges here. A full-size pickup or a three-row SUV such as a Suburban or an F-250 typically adds $150 to $300. Trailers are limited by height and weight, so a bigger vehicle takes room the driver could otherwise sell.

Can I ship a lifted truck or a lowered car?

Both, and both need mentioning at quote time. A lifted truck may not fit the upper deck and sometimes needs a particular trailer. A lowered car needs a driver with extra ramps so it clears the incline. Neither is a problem when we know in advance, and both can become one if we find out on the day.

How quickly can you collect my car?

Our standard pickup window is 6 days from booking. Expedited narrows it to 3 days, which is 72 hours. Because so much I-10 traffic passes through Tucson, collection here often happens toward the front of the window rather than at the end of it.

Is expedited worth it from Tucson?

It depends on the distance and we will tell you which side you are on. Expedited cuts the pickup window from six days to three. It does not speed up the drive, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. On a short run like Phoenix or San Diego the window is most of your timeline, so it buys you real dates. To Miami it is a thinner benefit.

Is my car insured during the move?

Your vehicle moves under the assigned carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, live from loading to unloading with nothing uncovered between. We confirm each carrier's coverage is active before dispatch and we will email you the certificate for your specific carrier whenever you ask.

What is your USDOT and MC number?

Smart Auto Move operates under USDOT 2887232 and MC 969368. Both are public on the FMCSA SAFER system, and we would rather you checked them than took our word for it. Looking those numbers up is the quickest way to tell a real transport company from a website.

Does my car need an emissions test in Tucson?

Most likely yes. The Arizona Department of Transportation states that testing is required in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas, including if you commute into these areas. Titling a vehicle brought in from another state needs an emissions compliance form in the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

Which vehicles skip the Tucson emissions test?

A vehicle that is five years old or less, or a 1966 model year or older, does not need to test. Electric vehicles are exempt as well. So a nearly new car arriving in Tucson has a few years before it sees a testing station.

What do I need to register an out-of-state car in Arizona?

Arizona asks for a completed, signed Title and Registration Application, your out-of-state title, or the registration if a lienholder holds the title, a lien clearance if one applies, and payment of the title and registration fees. In the Tucson area, add the emissions compliance form.

Any tip on timing the emissions test?

One useful detail. For renewals, the Arizona Department of Transportation says vehicles should be tested no sooner than 90 days before the registration expires. If your car is arriving close to a renewal date, that 90-day window is worth checking before you book the test.

Can the car arrive before I do?

Yes, and it often makes sense here. Send it to a relative, a friend, a workplace or a short-term rental while your own travel catches up. The emissions test and the registration both need the physical car in Arizona anyway, so having it there early helps. Give us the delivery contact at booking.

Does someone need to be there at both ends?

Someone does, and it need not be you. Any responsible adult will do: a partner, a relative, a neighbor, a building manager, a coworker. They hand over or receive the keys, walk the car with the driver and sign the condition report. Give us their name and a cell number at booking.

Can I leave belongings in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Keep it to around a hundred pounds, in the trunk and below the window line so the driver can see out. Carrier Cargo Insurance covers the vehicle rather than its contents, so anything valuable or hard to replace travels better with you.

How should I prepare the car?

Wash it, because dust hides the marks the condition report should record, and in Tucson that matters more than most places. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel. Turn the alarm off. Then photograph all four corners, the roof and the wheels in daylight. Five minutes of that makes the handover simple.

What is the condition report?

It is the inspection you and the driver both sign at pickup, recording every existing mark on the car, and sign again at delivery. Keep your copy. Compare the car against it in good light before you sign it off, and take your own photographs again while you are there.

What if something is wrong at delivery?

Note it on the condition report before the driver leaves, photograph it, and call us that day. That written note at the curb is what makes a Carrier Cargo Insurance claim straightforward, and we file it with the carrier for you. It is uncommon and it resolves much faster when the paperwork happens on the spot.

Does the car change trailers along the way?

Not with us. Whoever loads it in Tucson unloads it at the far end. No second company partway, no night in a storage yard. Damage in this business clusters at exactly that transfer, so a route without one removes the opportunity rather than insuring against it.

Can I reach the driver on the road?

You get the driver's name and direct number once the carrier is assigned, which is more useful than a dot on a map. Drivers will tell you roughly where they are and give you a real delivery window about a day out. Our team checks in along the way and you can call any time.

Can I ship two cars together?

Yes, and it usually beats two separate bookings. Two vehicles from one Tucson address to one address at the far end save the driver two stops, and that efficiency shows up on the second car. Ask for both at quote time and we will price them as a pair.

How does payment work?

A deposit goes on a card once the carrier is assigned, and the balance is settled with the driver at delivery. That balance is usually cash, a cashier's check or a money order, and your driver confirms which they take when the delivery window is set.

Will the final price match the quote?

Yes. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. That is the Smart Price Promise. What changes a quote is a change in the facts, so tell us early and we re-price it before dispatch rather than after.

Where is Smart Auto Move based?

Registered business address: 4208 Six Forks Rd Ste 1000, Raleigh, NC 27609. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida.

How do I get a real price for my Tucson move?

Use the form at the top of this page with both ZIP codes, the year, make and model, and whether the car runs. You will have a real figure in minutes rather than a teaser rate that moves later. You can also call 888-709-9078 and talk it through with someone.

Why a mid-size city gets big-city carrier availability

Tucson has about a million people in its metro area. On population alone you would expect to wait longer for a truck here than in Phoenix or Denver. In practice you usually do not, and the reason is one road.

Interstate 10 runs Los Angeles, Phoenix, Tucson, Las Cruces, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Mobile, Tallahassee and on to Jacksonville. It is the southern transcontinental route, and it is the only coast-to-coast corridor that stays clear of snow all year.

That matters more than it sounds. When I-70 and I-80 close across the Rockies in January, a great deal of east-west freight moves south onto I-10. When the Sierra and the Siskiyou take a storm, more of it does. So Tucson sees a heavy flow of car haulers in every month of the year, including the months when northern cities of the same size see fewer.

A driver already passing through Tucson with a space to fill will take your car rather than detour for a better-paid load. That is the whole mechanism behind availability on this lane, and it is why we can publish figures here with reasonable confidence rather than quoting everything live.

What Arizona asks once the car is here

Arizona's paperwork is short, and Tucson has one requirement that much of the state does not. Here it is, from the Arizona Department of Transportation.

  • Emissions testing is required in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas, including if you commute into these areas.
  • Titling a vehicle brought in from another state needs an emissions compliance form in the Phoenix and Tucson areas.
  • A vehicle that is five years old or less does not need to test. Nor does a 1966 model year or older, or an electric vehicle.
  • To title and register an out-of-state car, Arizona asks for a completed, signed Title and Registration Application, your out-of-state title, or the registration if a lienholder holds the title, a lien clearance if one applies, and payment of the fees.
  • For renewals, vehicles should be tested no sooner than 90 days before the registration expires.

Two things follow from that list. A nearly new car arriving in Tucson has a few years before it sees a testing station at all, and so does a classic or an electric car. And because the emissions test needs the physical vehicle, having the car in Arizona early rather than late makes the registration a single errand instead of two.

Keep your existing coverage in force until the Arizona policy starts. The car travels under the carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance, so there is no gap on the trailer. You want none on the driveway either.

Collecting and delivering across the Tucson metro

Tucson is an easier city for a car carrier than most, and it comes down to how it was built.

It is low, flat and laid out on a wide grid. Broadway, Speedway, Grant, Oracle, Kolb and the I-10 and I-19 frontage roads all give a 75-foot trailer room to stop, load and pull away. Central Tucson, the university district, Rita Ranch, Tanque Verde, Marana, Sahuarita, Green Valley and Vail all take a full-size truck at the curb in most cases.

The Foothills

Catalina Foothills and the roads climbing toward Mount Lemmon have narrow curves and low mesquite and palo verde branches. A loaded carrier cannot clear them, so the driver picks a wider street below.

Gated and covered

A gated community without a turning circle, or an apartment complex with a covered entry, both need a nearby lot instead. Telling your gate to expect a car carrier turns it into a five-minute job.

Base and campus

Davis-Monthan handovers happen just outside the gate, since no carrier has base credentials. University of Arizona deliveries work best a short walk from the narrow blocks around campus.

Every one of those situations is routine and none of them costs extra. The driver arranges the spot with you in advance rather than discovering the problem on the day, which is the whole point of asking about access at booking.

Who ships cars in and out of Tucson

Winter residents

The biggest group. Tucson fills up from October and empties from April, and many customers book the same pair of moves every year rather than driving both legs.

Military orders

Davis-Monthan Air Force Base sits inside the city and moves people in both directions all year. We can book on orders before the report date is firm.

Students and job moves

The University of Arizona brings cars in every August and sends them home every May, and Tucson's tech and aerospace employers relocate people year round.

Our military car shipping page and student discount page cover the second and third cases. If you run this route seasonally, ask about both legs at once, because the ranges are the same in either direction.

When to book, and what it saves you

Tucson has a genuine season, and it moves your price more than anything else you control.

October to April

The winter months. Southbound into southern Arizona fills up in the fall and northbound out of it fills up in spring. You will still get a truck, and two to three weeks of lead time gets you a better one.

May to September

The quieter stretch and the better value. Fewer people are moving cars into the desert in July, so you sit at the bottom of the range and wait less for a carrier.

One practical note about summer here, and it is a scheduling detail rather than a delay. Drivers on the Arizona stretches of I-10 and I-8 often run at night in July and August, because it is easier on the equipment and on them. It does not change your day count. It does mean a pickup or a delivery may land earlier or later in the day than you expect, and the driver will tell you.

Open, enclosed or expedited from Tucson

Open transport carries almost every car here and all the prices on this page are open prices. Enclosed is the choice for a collector car, an exotic, a low car or fresh paint. Budget about 80 percent above the open figure.

On the Arizona sun question, we will give you the honest answer rather than the upsell. A few days of open transport exposes your car to the same sun it would meet parked outside in Tucson. Enclosed earns its money on a valuable finish, a soft top or a car you would not want a stone chip on, not on sunlight alone.

Expedited narrows the pickup window from six days to three. The drive does not shorten, because drivers work to federal hours-of-service limits. On a short run like Phoenix or San Diego that window is most of your timeline, so expedited buys you real dates. To Miami it is a thinner benefit, and we will say so. The open and enclosed guide covers the trailer choice and the standard versus expedited guide covers the timing one.

A car that will not start ships perfectly well. It loads on a winch, which adds $200 or more to the running price, and telling us at quote time means the right truck is assigned from the start.

The carrier moving your car

One carrier from our vetted network of over 16,000 runs the whole distance, with no transfer partway and no night in a storage yard. Active FMCSA authority and a live insurance filing come first and nothing moves without both. After that comes the trailer, how often that driver works the I-10 corridor, and how their recent deliveries went.

That carrier's Carrier Cargo Insurance covers your vehicle from the Tucson pickup through to delivery, and the certificate is yours on request. Our own record is public on SAFER at USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.

We have no office in Arizona and we would rather say so plainly than list an address here. Your Tucson move is coordinated on the national line at 888-709-9078 and handled by a vetted carrier who works these corridors. Our four staffed offices are in Lakewood, Washington; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; and Kissimmee, Florida.
