Phoenix to Tacoma Car Shipping

Phoenix to Tacoma Car Shipping & Auto Transport Updated September 2026

Written by Richard Avery, President of Smart Auto Move  ·  USDOT 2887232  ·  MC 969368

Shipping a car from Phoenix to Tacoma costs $1,350 to $1,600 on an open trailer, over about 1,430 miles and three to four days on the road. The Tacoma to Phoenix direction prices the same. This is the spring half of the snowbird lane, and the thing that most often goes wrong on it has nothing to do with the truck: a car that has sat in the Valley since November often will not start in March.

What Phoenix to Tacoma car shipping costs

Operable mid-size vehicle, open trailer, reviewed September 2026. Both directions of this lane price level.

Tacoma back to Phoenix THE RETURN LEGThe same corridor in reverse1,430 miles3 to 4 days$1,350 to $1,600

Both directions carry the same figure, and that is unusual enough to be worth a sentence. On most corridors we publish, one direction costs meaningfully more than the other, and we say so on those pages. Phoenix and Tacoma sit level. What does move the number here is the month: a March or April departure competes with everybody else leaving the Valley at once and lands at the top of the range, while summer and late fall sit at the bottom. If your dates have any give in them, that is where the saving is.

These are estimates, not fixed prices. Diesel is the biggest cost in moving a car and fuel prices move, so we review these ranges as the market changes. The days shown are road days; your collection window comes first. Enclosed transport runs about 80 percent more than open. Oversized, modified and non-running vehicles are each priced on their own terms. See how our national bands work.

The most expensive thing on this route is a dead battery

Almost everything that goes wrong on the northbound leg comes down to one thing, and it is not the truck. A car booked as running that turns out to be dead when the driver arrives has to be re-rated at the curb as a non-running vehicle. That changes the price, and on a spring pickup it can cost you the slot entirely.

It happens because of how this lane works. A great many vehicles on it have spent the winter parked in a Valley driveway or garage. Phoenix heat is hard on a battery over the summer, and four or five months of standing finishes what the heat started.

What to do about it, a week outStart the car a week before your pickup date rather than the morning of. That leaves time to fit a battery if it needs one, which is a sixty dollar problem when you find it early and a repriced shipment when you find it late. Then start it again the day before the truck comes.
And check three things while you are thereThat it rolls, that it steers, and that it brakes. Those are exactly what decides whether the car can drive onto a standard open trailer. After a long sit the usual finds are soft or flat-spotted tires and brakes that have stuck. All three are quick to sort out with a week's notice.

And if it will not start, just tell us. There is no penalty at all for booking a vehicle as non-running: we assign a trailer with a winch and a driver equipped for it, and we price it properly from the beginning. Budget $200 upward on top of the figures above. The only expensive version of this situation is the one nobody mentioned until the driver was standing in the driveway.

Phoenix to Tacoma Car Shipping Questions

What people shipping a car north out of the Valley actually ask, answered for this route rather than with national averages.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Phoenix to Tacoma?

$1,350 to $1,600 for an operable mid-size vehicle on an open trailer, over about 1,430 miles in three to four days on the road. The Tacoma to Phoenix direction prices the same. Your collection window comes before those road days and is separate.

My car has sat in Phoenix since November. Will it start?

Often not, and this is the single most useful thing on the page. Heat is hard on batteries and months of standing finishes the job. Start it a week before pickup so there is time to fit a new one, then again the day before the truck comes. Five minutes now saves the whole booking.

What happens if it will not start on the day?

It gets re-rated at the curb as a non-running vehicle, which changes the price and can cost you the slot. That is the expensive version. The cheap version is telling us in advance, and there is no penalty for it: we send a trailer with a winch and price it properly from the start.

What else should I check after a long sit?

That it rolls, steers and brakes, because those three things decide whether it can drive onto a standard trailer. Flat-spotted or soft tires and sticking brakes are the usual finds. Leave about a quarter tank of fuel, which is enough to load and unload without adding weight.

When is the busiest time on this route?

March and April, by a wide margin. Seasonal residents leave the Valley inside a narrow few weeks and northbound trailers fill fast. If you are going north in spring, book three to four weeks out. It is the one time of year when waiting costs you both money and the choice of date.

When is it easiest?

Late fall and summer. October and November the rush runs the other way, and trucks arriving in Phoenix loaded want northbound freight for the return, which works in your favor. June through August is the quietest stretch in both directions.

How long does the drive take?

Three to four days once the car is loaded. Federal rules cap the hours a driver may spend at the wheel and there are other vehicles coming off along the way. Between them those two things set the pace rather than the speed limit.

What is the collection window?

The spread of days we work within to get a trailer to you, six days as standard or three with expedited. It runs before the road days rather than inside them. In the spring rush this is the part that slips if you have given us a single date rather than a range.

What route does my car take?

Usually Interstate 10 west out of the Valley into California, then Interstate 5 north through Sacramento and Portland into Tacoma. Some trucks run the inland way instead, up US-93 to Las Vegas then Interstate 15 and Interstate 84 through Salt Lake City and Boise. Both are around 1,430 miles.

Does it cross any mountain passes?

No, and that is worth knowing if you are shipping in winter. The Interstate 5 corridor runs at low elevation the whole way up, so Snoqualmie, White and Chinook pass closures have nothing to do with this route. It holds its timing through winter better than anything running east out of Washington.

Does the Tacoma to Phoenix direction cost the same?

Yes, $1,350 to $1,600 for the same vehicle on the same trailer. The two directions price level on this lane, which is unusual. If you are weighing a move either way, price is not the thing that should decide it.

Do you collect from gated and 55-plus communities?

All the time, and it needs one line at booking. Sun City, Sun City West, Sun Lakes and many gated developments limit commercial vehicles or have low entries, so we load just outside the gate or in a lot nearby. Tell us the community and the driver plans for it rather than finding out on arrival.

What if I fly home before the truck arrives?

Very common here and easily handled. Name a neighbor, a property manager, a family member or the community office on the order, with a cell number. Whoever is there releases the vehicle and signs the condition report. Nothing else is needed from you.

Which Phoenix areas do you collect from?

The whole Valley. Phoenix, Scottsdale, Mesa, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale, Buckeye, Queen Creek, Paradise Valley, Sun City, Sun City West, Sun Lakes, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek, Anthem, Ahwatukee and Apache Junction.

Is a Phoenix pickup usually door to door?

More often than in most large cities. The Valley has wide arterial roads, a grid layout and generous parking, so a full-size trailer can usually reach the address itself. The exceptions are the denser blocks around downtown Phoenix, Tempe near the university and Old Town Scottsdale.

Can the truck reach my street in Tacoma?

It depends which side of the city. South Tacoma, the Tacoma Mall area, East Tacoma and the Tideflats have wide roads and go straight to the door. The North End, Stadium District, Proctor and Hilltop have steep grades and narrow streets a 75-foot rig cannot work, so we meet in a lot nearby at no extra charge.

Do you have anyone near Tacoma?

Our staffed office is at 5607 Boston Ave SW in Lakewood, about nine miles from downtown Tacoma and fifteen minutes down Interstate 5, on 253-200-5645. It is an operations base rather than a depot, so your car goes to your address rather than to a yard.

Do you handle Luke Air Force Base to JBLM moves?

Yes, and this lane covers both ends. Luke is in Glendale on the west side of the Valley, and Joint Base Lewis-McChord borders Lakewood where our office sits. Send the earliest and latest date your orders allow rather than one day and we will work inside that.

What if my PCS date moves?

Call Lakewood on 253-200-5645 and we move it against the same price rather than starting again. You also do not need a final Tacoma address at booking. Delivery can be set to a spouse, a sponsor or an accessible spot near the base and updated while the car is in transit.

Anything to know about bringing a desert car to the Northwest?

Two small things. Arizona sun is hard on rubber, so wiper blades that were fine in a dry climate often streak badly in a Tacoma October, and door seals dry out. Tire pressure also drops noticeably moving from Valley heat to Puget Sound cool, so check it in the first week.

Do I need to register the car in Washington?

Only if you are becoming a resident, since the requirement follows residency rather than where the car is parked. There is one piece of good news either way: Washington ended its vehicle emissions check program on 1 January 2020, so unlike Maricopa County there is no emissions test to schedule. Check the current titling rules with the Department of Licensing.

Is open transport right for this trip?

For nearly every car going north, yes. Nine or ten vehicles travel together on a two-deck trailer with no roof or sides, the same equipment franchise dealers receive new inventory on. Three days of exposure on Interstate 5 is about as mild as long-distance transport gets.

Would enclosed be worth it?

It is the usual pick for a collector or low-clearance car that wintered in the Valley and is going home. Enclosed runs about 80 percent above open. Ask us to quote both and decide with the two numbers rather than the description.

Is expedited worth paying for here?

In the spring rush, genuinely yes, which is not something we say on every lane. It tightens the collection window from six days to three. The drive is unchanged because driving hours are set by federal rule, but in March and April the window is the part under pressure.

How do I keep the price down?

Give us a range of three or four days rather than one, and book ahead of the spring rush. A driver with one space left takes whichever car is convenient rather than driving further for a better-paid one. Every extra day you can offer is another chance to be that car.

Who insures my car on the trailer?

Carrier Cargo Insurance, and the policy belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It is live from the moment the car is loaded in Phoenix until it comes off in Tacoma. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts and it is yours to see whenever you ask.

Can I check the carrier myself?

Yes, on a federal database, in about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup. Enter a USDOT number and it returns whether that company holds authority to operate and what insurance sits on file. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.

Does my car sit anywhere along the way?

No. It goes from your address straight onto the trailer and off again in Tacoma. There is no yard, no terminal and no second trucking company taking over partway. That handover is where most damage claims in this business begin.

Can I leave things in the car?

Usually yes, within reason. Around a hundred pounds, in the trunk, nothing piled where the driver needs to see out. The cover is on the vehicle rather than its contents, so anything valuable travels with you.

What about a pickup truck or a large SUV?

Both standard on this lane. A bigger vehicle takes more of the deck and adds weight, so it prices above a mid-size sedan. Send the year, make and model plus any lift or oversized tires and we will price the vehicle you own.

Can you take two cars together?

Yes, and households leaving the Valley for good do it often. Two vehicles on one trailer to the same address save the driver a stop, and that saving shows up on the second car. Ask for them as a pair.

Will I get sales calls after asking for a quote?

No. We do not make outbound sales calls or send sales texts, and we do not sell your information. That is separate from being reachable: call 888-709-9078 or the Lakewood office any time, and once an order is live the driver will of course be in touch to arrange the handover.

Will the final bill match the quote?

Yes. The price we quote is the price you pay, as long as the vehicle, the route, the condition and the shipping details stay the same. That is the Smart Price Promise, and it is exactly why we would rather you told us about a dead battery now than at the curb.

When to book, because this lane has a season

Northbound out of Phoenix runs on a different calendar from southbound, and the window you book in matters more here than on almost any other route we handle.

March and April are the crush

Seasonal residents leave the Valley inside a narrow few weeks and northbound trailers fill quickly. Book three to four weeks ahead if you are going then. This is the one stretch of the year where waiting genuinely costs you money and the choice of pickup day.

October and November are quiet going north

The fall rush runs the other way. Trucks arriving in Phoenix loaded need freight for the trip back out, and that works in your favor. Late fall is one of the easier times to move a car up to Washington.

Summer is the calmest

June through August is quiet in both directions. Valley pickups are usually set for early morning or evening to stay out of the heat, and a northbound delivery into a Pacific Northwest summer is about as straightforward as vehicle transport gets.

Mid-May and late August

Arizona State empties in May and the Tacoma-area universities fill in late August, so student cars press on both ends of this lane in the same two windows. Book earlier than feels necessary for either.

Give us a window, not a date

Naming three or four days rather than one is the cheapest thing you can do here. It lets your car go on a trailer already heading north instead of one we have to find for a single morning. In the spring rush it is the difference between the top and the bottom of the range.

Winter is not a problem on this route

The Interstate 5 corridor runs at low elevation the whole way, so the Cascade passes have nothing to do with it. Phoenix to Tacoma holds its timing through winter better than anything running east out of Washington.

Collection across the Phoenix metro

The Valley is one of the easier large metros in the country to load from. Here is what changes in practice.

Most of the Valley is door to door

Wide arterial roads, a grid layout and generous parking mean a full-size trailer can usually reach the address itself rather than asking you to meet it. Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear and Queen Creek are all comfortable.

Gated and 55-plus communities

Sun City, Sun City West, Sun Lakes and many gated developments limit commercial vehicles or have low entries. We load just outside the gate or in a lot nearby, which is completely routine. Name the community at booking and the driver plans for it in advance.

The denser blocks

Downtown Phoenix, Tempe near the university and Old Town Scottsdale have tight turns and structured parking a trailer cannot enter. A nearby retail lot works better, costs you nothing, and is agreed when you book rather than negotiated on the day.

If you fly home first

Very common on this lane and simple to handle. Name a neighbor, a property manager, a family member or the community office on the order, with a cell number. Whoever is there releases the car and signs the condition report.

Luke Air Force Base

Out in Glendale on the west side of the Valley, and regular work for us. Send the earliest and latest date your orders allow rather than a single day. The handover happens at an accessible spot off base, since access rules belong to the base, and it costs nothing extra.

Tucson and the rest of Arizona

Also covered, and priced on the day since the distance changes. If you are starting outside the Valley, send the address and we will price the actual route rather than adjusting a Phoenix figure.

The road north, and delivery in Tacoma

Two common routings, both about three to four days, and one thing worth knowing about the Tacoma end.

The usual way, I-10 then I-5

West out of the Valley on Interstate 10 into California, then north on Interstate 5 through Sacramento and Portland into Tacoma. It is the busiest version because carriers can load and drop along the whole corridor, and our Los Angeles office sits directly on it.

The inland option

Some trucks run US-93 north to Las Vegas, then Interstate 15 and Interstate 84 through Salt Lake City and Boise before turning west. Similar distance, and it shows up more in summer when the Interstate 5 farm corridor is at its busiest.

Which half of Tacoma you are in

South Tacoma, the Tacoma Mall area, East Tacoma and the Tideflats have wide roads and go straight to the door. The North End, Stadium District, Proctor and Hilltop combine steep grades with narrow streets a 75-foot rig cannot work, so the handover moves to a lot nearby at no charge.

Our staffed Washington office is at 5607 Boston Ave SW in Lakewood, about nine miles from downtown Tacoma and fifteen minutes down Interstate 5, on 253-200-5645. It holds 4.5 out of 5 across 30 Google reviews. Pacific hours are Monday to Thursday 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Friday 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM and Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is an operations base rather than a depot, so your car goes to your own address rather than to a yard.

Bringing a desert car back to the Pacific Northwest

Three small things that are easy to sort out in the first week and annoying to discover in the first storm.

Wipers and seals

Arizona sun is hard on rubber. Blades that were perfectly fine in a dry climate often streak badly in a Tacoma October, and door and window seals dry out over a few desert summers. Both are cheap and quick, and worth doing before the rain starts rather than during it.

Tire pressure and tread

Pressure drops noticeably moving from Valley heat to Puget Sound cool, so check it in the first week rather than the first month. Tread depth also matters more here, since Tacoma's wet season runs October through March and the roads stay slick well past the first storm.

If you plan to cross the Cascades

Washington applies chain and traction tire requirements on the mountain passes in winter. Your car did not need to think about that in Phoenix. Worth knowing before the first trip east rather than at the bottom of the pass.

Registering the car if Tacoma is your new home

If this is a move rather than a seasonal return, there are a couple of things worth knowing. There is good news in one of them.

No emissions test

Washington ran an emission check program for 38 years and ended it on 1 January 2020. Owners are no longer required to have emissions tested to renew a registration. Coming from Maricopa County, where a check is part of the routine, you can cross it off the list entirely.

Titling and use tax

New residents are expected to title and register with the Washington Department of Licensing within a set window, and use tax can apply to a vehicle brought into the state depending on what you paid elsewhere. The Department of Licensing publishes the current thresholds, so take the detail from them rather than from us.

Seasonal residents usually do nothing

The requirement follows residency rather than where the car is parked. If you keep the vehicle registered in Arizona and spend part of the year in each place, this section generally does not apply to you at all.

Open, enclosed or expedited going north

Three choices, and the spring rush changes one of the usual answers.

Open Phoenix to Tacoma car shipping

What almost every northbound vehicle travels on and the basis of every figure on this page. Nine or ten cars share a two-deck trailer with no roof or sides, the same equipment franchise dealers receive new inventory on. Three days of exposure on Interstate 5 is mild as long-distance transport goes.

Enclosed Phoenix to Tacoma auto transport

About 80 percent above open, and the usual pick for a collector or low-clearance car that wintered in the Valley and is heading home. Sealed from grit and rain the whole way. Ask us to quote both and let the two numbers decide it.

Expedited Phoenix to Tacoma vehicle shipping

Tightens the collection window from six days to three. The drive is unchanged, since driving hours are set by federal rule. In March and April, though, the window is exactly the part under pressure, so this is one of the few lanes where we will tell you it is likely worth the money.

Whose insurance is on your car

Cover is in force from the moment the straps go on. Most companies will tell you that much; fewer will say whose policy it is. Ours, plainly.

The policy behind your Phoenix to Tacoma order

Carrier Cargo Insurance does the work, and it belongs to the trucking company assigned to your vehicle rather than to us. It is live from the moment the car is loaded in the Valley until it comes off the trailer in Tacoma. We hold the certificate as soon as a carrier accepts, and it is yours to see whenever you ask.

Your car does not sit anywhere

It goes from your address straight onto the trailer and off again in Tacoma. No terminal, no holding lot, no night in a yard, and no second trucking company taking over partway. That handover is where most damage claims in this business begin, and this route simply does not have one.

All of it is checkable in about a minute. SAFER is the FMCSA's free public lookup: enter a USDOT number and it returns that carrier's operating authority and the insurance filed against it. Ours is USDOT 2887232, MC 969368.
